Joke TPM Post Freaks Out Global Warming Denier

Wow everyone, check this out...

A funny post by our friend "The Insolent Braggart" here at TPMCafe has so freaked out a global warming denier that he sent out the following press release last night.  What follows is the verbatim press release and I am seriously not making this up.

Release:

Marc Morano: Morano served for three years as a senior advisor, speechwriter, and climate researcher for U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee as he also managed the award-winning communication operations of the GOP side. Morano, who has spent years researching climate change, environmental, and energy issues, traveled to Greenland in 2007 to investigate global warming claims. As Senate staff, Morano also attended the United Nation's climate eco-conferences held in Kenya, Indonesia, and Poland in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Morano authored and compiled the 2007 groundbreaking report of 400-plus dissenting scientists and the follow-up 2009 report of 700-plus scientists dissenting from man-made global warming fears. Morano has held both White House and Capitol Hill Press credentials and a former member of the Society of Professional Journalists. He has attended and reported on numerous international eco-conferences as well as the 2002 UN-sponsored Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Prior to joining the Senate, Morano worked for well over a decade as an investigative journalist, documentary maker, radio talk show host and national television correspondent. In 2000, his investigative television documentary "Amazon Rainforest: Clear-Cutting the Myths" created an international firestorm. His reporting has made international news, including appearances and coverage on CNN, Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor, Lou Dobbs and Hannity & Colmes, BBC TV, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, US Weekly Magazine, web links from the Drudge Report, the entertainment show Extra TV, and Politically Incorrect w/ Bill Maher.

'Execute' Skeptics! Shock Call To Action: 'At what point do we jail or execute global warming deniers' -- 'Shouldn't we start punishing them now?'

June 08, 2009 - By Marc Morano - Climate Depot

A public appeal has been issued by an influential U.S. website asking: "At what point do we jail or execute global warming deniers." The appeal appeared on Talking Points Memo, an often cited website that helps set the agenda for the political Left in the U.S. The anonymous posting, dated June 2, 2009, referred to dissenters of man-made global warming fears as "greedy bastards" who use "bogus science or the lowest scientists in the gene pool" to "distort data."

The Talking Points Memo article continues: "So when the right wing fucktards have caused it to be too late to fix the problem, and we start seeing the devastating consequences and we start seeing end of the World type events - how will we punish those responsible. It will be too late. So shouldn't we start punishing them now?"

The article also claims the "vast majority" of scientists agree that man-made warming "can do an untold amount of damage to life on Earth."

The full text of the Talking Points Memo is reproduced below:

(Note: The entry is posted under the anonymous byline "The Insolent Braggart")

At what point do we jail or execute global warming deniers

June 2, 2009, 9:42PM

What is so frustrating about these fools is that they are the politicians and greedy bastards who don't want a cut in their profits who use bogus science or the lowest scientists in the gene pool who will distort data for a few bucks. The vast majority of the scientific minds in the World agree and understand it's a very serious problem that can do an untold amount of damage to life on Earth.

So when the right wing fucktards have caused it to be too late to fix the problem, and we start seeing the devastating consequences and we start seeing end of the World type events - how will we punish those responsible. It will be too late. So shouldn't we start punishing them now?

Climate Depot Editor's Note:

The Talking Points Memo appeal to execute skeptics is not unique. As the science behind man-made global warming fears utterly collapses, many of the biggest promoters of the theory and environmental activists are growing increasingly desperate. Looming Question: If the promoters of man-made climate fears truly believed the "debate is over" and the science is "settled", why is there such a strong impulse to shut down debate and threaten those who disagree?

Small sampling of threats, intimidation and censorship:

NASA's James Hansen has called for trials of climate skeptics in 2008 for "high crimes against humanity." Environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lashed out at skeptics of 2007 declaring "This is treason. And we need to start treating them as traitors" In 2009, RFK, Jr. also called coal companies "criminal enterprises" and declared CEO's 'should be in jail... for all of eternity."

In 2006, the eco-magazine Grist called for Nuremberg-Style trials for skeptics. In 2008, Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki called for government leaders skeptical of global warming to be thrown "into jail." In 2007, The Weather Channel's climate expert called for withholding certification of skeptical meteorologists.

A 2008 report found that 'climate blasphemy' is replacing traditional religious blasphemy. In addition, a July 2007 Senate report detailed how skeptical scientists have faced threats and intimidation.

In 2007, then EPA Chief Vowed to Probe E-mail Threatening to 'Destroy' Career of Climate Skeptic and dissenters of warming fears have been called 'Climate Criminals' who are committing 'Terracide' (killing of Planet Earth) (July 25, 2007) In addition, in May 2009, Climate Depot Was Banned in Louisiana! See: State official sought to 'shut down' climate skeptic's testimony at hearing.

Below are many more examples of the threats, name calling and intimidation skeptics have faced in recent times.

November 12, 2007: UN official warns ignoring warming would be 'criminally irresponsible' Excerpt: The U.N.'s top climate official warned policymakers and scientists trying to hammer out a landmark report on climate change that ignoring the urgency of global warming would be "criminally irresponsible." Yvo de Boer's comments came at the opening of a weeklong conference that will complete a concise guide on the state of global warming and what can be done to stop the Earth from overheating.

September 29. 2007: VA State Climatologist skeptical of global warming loses job after clash with Governor: 'I was told that I could not speak in public' Excerpt: Michaels has argued that the climate is becoming warmer but that the consequences will not be as dire as others have predicted. Gov. Kaine had warned. Michaels not to use his official title in discussing his views. "I resigned as Virginia state climatologist because I was told that I could not speak in public on my area of expertise, global warming, as state climatologist," Michaels said in a statement this week provided by the libertarian Cato Institute, where he has been a fellow since 1992. "It was impossible to maintain academic freedom with this speech restriction." (LINK)

Skeptical State Climatologist in Oregon has title threatened by Governor (February 8, 2007) Excerpt: "[State Climatologist George Taylor] does not believe human activities are the main cause of global climate change...So the [Oregon] governor wants to take that title from Taylor and make it a position that he would appoint. In an exclusive interview with KGW-TV, Governor Ted Kulongoski confirmed he wants to take that title from Taylor.

Skeptical State Climatologist in Delaware silenced by Governor (May 2, 2007) Excerpt: Legates is a state climatologist in Delaware, and he teaches at the university. He`s not part of the mythical climate consensus. In fact, Legates believes that we oversimplify climate by just blaming greenhouse gases. One day he received a letter from the governor, saying his views do not concur with those of the administration, so if he wants to speak out, it must be as an individual, not as a state climatologist. So essentially, you can have the title of state climatologist unless he`s talking about his views on climate?

October 28, 2008: License to dissent: 'Internet should be nationalized as a public utility' to combat global warming skepticism - Australian Herald Sun - Excerpt: British journalism lecturer and warming alarmist Alex Lockwood says my blog is a menace to the planet. Skeptical bloggers like me need bringing into line, and Lockwood tells a journalism seminar of some options: There is clearly a need for research into the ways in which climate skepticism online is free to contest scientific fact. But there is enough here already to put forward some of the ideas in circulation. One of the founders of the Internet Vint Cerf, and lead for Google's Internet for Everyone project, made a recent suggestion that the Internet should be nationalized as a public utility. As tech policy blogger Jim Harper argues, "giving power over the Internet to well-heeled interests and self-interested politicians" is, and I quote, "a bad idea." Or in the UK every new online publication could be required to register with the recently announced Internet watchdog...

November 5, 2008: UK Scientist: 'BBC SHUNNED ME FOR DENYING CLIMATE CHANGE' - UK Daily Express

Excerpt: FOR YEARS David Bellamy was one of the best known faces on TV. A respected botanist and the author of 35 books, he had presented around 400 programmes over the years and was appreciated by audiences for his boundless enthusiasm. Yet for more than 10 years he has been out of the limelight, shunned by bosses at the BBC where he made his name, as well as fellow scientists and environmentalists. His crime? Bellamy says he doesn't believe in man-made global warming. Here he reveals why - and the price he has paid for not toeing the orthodox line on climate change.

U.N. official says it's 'completely immoral' to doubt global warming fears (May 10, 2007)

Excerpt: UN special climate envoy Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland declared "it's completely immoral, even, to question" the UN's scientific "consensus."

Former US Vice President Al Gore compared global warming skeptics to people who 'believe the moon landing was actually staged in a movie lot in Arizona' (June 20, 2006)

Gore Refuses to Hear Skeptical Global Warming Views (Video)

UK environment secretary David Miliband said 'those who deny [climate change] are the flat-Earthers of the twenty-first century' (October 6, 2006)

Weather Channel Climate Expert Calls for Decertifying Global Warming Skeptics (January 17, 2007) Excerpt: The Weather Channel's most prominent climatologist is advocating that broadcast meteorologists be stripped of their scientific certification if they express skepticism about predictions of manmade catastrophic global warming. This latest call to silence skeptics follows a year (2006) in which skeptics were compared to "Holocaust Deniers" and Nuremberg-style war crimes trials were advocated by several climate alarmists.

Great catch.

user-pic

Dammit, why didn't I get that kind of play for:

"Bibi calls Jews' balls "small"...SHONDE!!" ??

Surely I was equally offensive, equally jocular?

(Prob'ly I would have prospered more if I had included some kind of death threat, but still...El Insolente shines as a beacon of satire, an example to those of us less talented (but still aspiring).

I'm gonna send a link to my post off right away to Abe Foxman, and see if I can get a rise out of him--he'll go for any bullshit that gives him a chance to shriek jewhater

In the mean time. let us bask (vicariously) in the attention to TPM Cafe, as we fete the Braggart.

user-pic

You were. You were just as offensive.

(pats poor jolly)

user-pic

just as offensive

Well, actually, I pulled my punches. The really offensive formulation is:

Bibi calls jew balls small; you know, the old "Democratic" vs. "Democrat" bitch slap.

But, oh no, I had to chick...uh, sorry, wuss out.

user-pic

Hilarious!

user-pic

From a Wonkroom article:

"Morano’s “entire job,” Gristmill’s David Roberts explains, “is to aggregate every misleading factoid, every attack on climate science or scientists, every crank skeptical statement from anyone in the world and send it all out periodically in email blasts” to the right-wing echo chamber."

http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/02/17/marc-morano-jokers/

user-pic

WHAT THE HELL? Is there not a pattern here? "This anonymous attack from the left wing." Is not that what Bay Buchanan was spouting about?

This is something.

Maybe we have more power here than we thought. ha

user-pic

"...an influential U.S. website "

We rule, dude.

user-pic

Way cool, huh?

user-pic

Ha!

This is freaking funny. I never knew that my comments actually represented TPM to the crazies, however. So if I say, Marc Moreno is a idiotic flatworlder asshat wrinkleschicken then it's as if ALL TPMers think the same?

user-pic

Yes because we're part of a "website that helps set the agenda for the political Left in the U.S." didn't you get the memo?

Can't wait to see what happens when they realize we posted their release and are mocking it.

user-pic

Good grief. I missed all of this, but your post is only half the story Destor! If you go to the front page - it's set up like Drudge's, you'll find links to the rightwing blogs that glommed on to the story.

Here are the ones I found in 2 quick run-throughs:

Christian News Analysis, 'Climate Blasphemy?’

user-pic

Amy Ridenour, National Center for Public Policy Research, A Somewhat Happy Ending to the Latest Death Threat Story...

TPM (Almost) Obliterates Skeptic Executioner, (Apparently the call for a skeptics’ gallows was too much even for the brash clan at TPM.)

user-pic

OneNewsNow (Christian news), Threat to global-warming skeptics retracted.

Update: Talking Points Memo issues retraction for call to execute skeptics! -- 'A formal retraction and apology'.

There are probably more, but I'd seen enough.

user-pic

Heh heh, so we've now become straw men over a litany of related blogs.

user-pic

Come back to us Insolent Braggart! You had nothing to apologize for!

user-pic

Well... other than the insolence.

And the braggadocio.

user-pic

After the deniers, can we off some litterbugs?

Now I'll have the Our Right to Litter lobby up in arms.

user-pic

Hilary, your link lead me to another one. Michael Barone also weighed in today in the Washington Examiner's Beltway Confidential. He points to a collection of calls for executions of “global warming deniers,” which has a link back to climatedepot.com.

user-pic

The Insolent Braggart has already commented on the original post and regretted it.

I don't think it is accurate to say that the original post was a "joke post". Rather it was an angry and intemperate post that the Insolent Braggart now apparently regrets was not more carefully thought out.

user-pic

This is from TPM Deputy Publisher Andrew Golis: To be clear, here's what happened here. TPMCafe allows any reader to sign up for an account to write a reader blog, so long as they abide by the site's Terms of Use. A reader with the account name "InsolentBraggart" wrote a post that clearly violated the site's Terms of Use. And because of that it was removed from the site in line with our policies.

We didn't consider it a joke. We considered it inappropriate and unacceptable and that's why it was removed from the site and the reader's account was suspended. The reader spoke to us, apologized, and promised to respect the site's Terms of Use going forward. We then reinstated his account conditioned on his adherence to our Terms going forward. He wrote a post apologizing for writing the original post. Mr. Morano has attempted to claim the post was published by TPM even though he knows it was posted by a reader in the site's discussion area.

user-pic

Thanks for weighing in Andrew. But these Morano folks are real clowns!

user-pic

Thanks, Andrew.

user-pic

Satire and parody is a violation of TPM's TOU?

Wow, there goes my Art Buchwaldian career choice!

Richard Dawkins Confesses: "Evolution is a Marxist Conspiracy!"

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/justiceputnam/2009/04/richard-dawkins-confesses-evol.php

user-pic

Notice that Andrew doesn't specify exactly what the violation was (some likely suspects: 'fucktard' and 'or execute') nor what kind of threats or complaints were directed at TPM staff to get TPM to review and remove the blog.

We should also note that Morano has turned a question about "when" into an immediate call for execution. He also turned 'deniers' into 'skeptics'. So not only was there no "death threat" (as some other blogger characterized it) but Morano is pretending that a denier who uses bogus science to attack a position is the same as an honest skeptic who asks sincere questions.

He's just trying to gain publicity here, spinning the spin.

My earlier comment in re IB's apology

user-pic

My next post is actually going to be a waffle.

No, no, not verbal waffling - a real waffle. Right here at TPM. And as if that wasn't exciting enough, it's gonna have Jesus in it too. Not IN the waffle - don't be stupid. In the SYRUP. And Jesus is gonna be drawn... errrr nix that... is gonna "appear" with his tongue sticking out. At who, you ask? Well, some of you are asking at "whom," but screw you fancy-pantses. At who?

A little picture of Marc Morano, that ALSO appeared in the syrup.

And the little word bubble is gonna show Jesus saying, "Marc Morano! Oh dear. Are you TEH COMPLEAT TOOL? Or what? Yes you are, uh-huh uh-huh. In fact, are you sure your name isn't... Marc MORONO?" And then Jesus-in-Syrup is gonna do this little crinkly smile, like he does. Sorry, like He does.

That's my next toast. Post.

What's yours? Bet you can't beat Jesus. And if you do, you're totally going to hell. Yeah, sure, bump Jesus off the top Reader's Post chart. NOT ADVISABLE.

user-pic

FOOTNOTE! Forgot to tell you. Jesus also said to say that global warming is VERY real. Make no mistake about it. As Hell draws nearer, rising up from the center of the Earth, the atmosphere grows warmer as well. It's kind of a distant early warning system, that - unsurprisingly - we're ignoring.

Nuthin' to do with CO2 though. He doesn't know what you're goin' on about with that crap.

user-pic

Give a man a waffle, and he has a good meal.

Give him a waffle iron, and he will have flour and gook all over the goddamnable counters and floor and stove top. (blesses himself)

user-pic

"Bet you can't beat Jesus. And if you do, you're totally going to hell. Yeah, sure, bump Jesus off the top Reader's Post chart. NOT ADVISABLE."

I think ELVIS would disagree.

user-pic

So you're one of those fanatics that thinks you can differentiate.

Sorry son. JESUS LIVES = ELVIS JESUS. It's just that simple.

Enjoy hell though. I hear Schopenhauer'll be there.

user-pic

To Andrew Solis - Thanks for the clarification. To IB - Thanks for the apology. Both are welcome in the interests of sanity, moral integrity, and astute advocacy.

In my experience, contests designed to gain public support for one's views are generally won by the side that comes across as most objective, most fact-oriented, most respectful, and least inclined to engage in vilification, insults, ridicule, or sarcasm - never mind references to the death penalty for those who disagree.

I realize that the desire to convince others is not the only reason contributors post here, because the impulses to vent one's frustrations, or to preach to the choir, are hard to repress. They should be restrained, however, by a need to preserve the well-earned reputation of TPM for thoughtful and well-informed discourse. My perception is that the recent events have already backfired, but that what Andrew and IB have done is working well to repair the damage.

user-pic

WHAT? I'll kill you!

Oh wait, never never mind...

user-pic

Golly.

I missed you, Destor!

user-pic

In my experience, contests designed to gain public support for one's views are generally won by the side that comes across as most objective, most fact-oriented, most respectful, and least inclined to engage in vilification, insults, ridicule, or sarcasm...

Yeah...tell that to Al Gore and John Kerry.

user-pic

"In my experience, contests designed to gain public support for one's views are generally won by the side that comes across as most objective, most fact-oriented, most respectful, and least inclined to engage in vilification, insults, ridicule, or sarcasm - never mind references to the death penalty for those who disagree."

I want to live on your planet. Really. I'm sick of this place.

user-pic

One reason, among many, why Al Gore lost the electoral vote to George Bush in 2000 is that he appeared less respectful during the debates. He sighed, appeared exasperated, and radiated an attitude of superiority, while Bush remained pleasant and on message.

One reason, among many, why John McCain did poorly against Barack Obama, was that his debate attitude impressed viewers as arrogant and dismissive, while Obama remained calm. That certainly wasn't the most important reason for Obama's election victory, but it was one of the most important reasons the public judged Obama the debate winner.

Those who enjoy ranting may wish to believe that they do better with an uncommitted public, but most skilled politicians have learned to mask contempt for their rivals behind a mask of civility of even admiration, having discovered that it almost always works well. Those who convince themselves otherwise do so at their peril.

In the Senate, the practice has even grown through custom to an absurd extreme. It's not unusual for one Senator to proclaim, "I have the utmost respect for the distinguished Senator from [fill in the blank] but...", when he is obviously thinking to himself, "this imbecile wouldn't even be elected dogcatcher, except he's so corrupt he'd probably pay off all the other candidates".

It'S also important to distinguish between attitudes employed to win public support and those designed to rouse the troops to do battle in a cause you and they share. When you're acting as cheerleader, almost anything goes rhetorically. When you're trying to influence someone who doesn't yet share your views, it's wise to be much more careful.

user-pic

The fact is that there is a well-paid coterie of sycophants that exploit science for nefarious ends. In the same manner that a historical revisionist can spread doubt or any other field expert can use their ethos as a means to sell their soul, most global warming deniers are helping to uphold a status quo that is killing the planet.

My hat is off to Insolent Braggart for exercising a bit of satire... it obviously worked. Next time, however, move away from the perceived threats and stick to skewering their motivation and the outcome. They have obviously sold their souls and need to be reminded.

user-pic

The thing that blows my mind is their concern over whether or not the global heating is man-made: the only important questions: are is it damaging and, if so, can we stop it?

Being able to stop it is much more likely if we are causing it in the first place.

Climate change deniers correctly point out that in the past warmings have occurred and CO2 levels have increased subsequently. There are a number of perturbations of orbits and sun cycles which can account for such warmings. Why the CO2 should increase subsequently is unknown. What they are ignoring is that it has been settled science since the 19th century that CO2 in the atmosphere acts as a greenhouse does to trap heat. So if you add levels of CO2 never seen before to the normal perturbations of climate you are now going to fry the earth.

Their argument is like saying I had the kids in the car (in December) with the windows up and there was no problem. I had the kids in the car (in July) when the temperature was 80. So why are you getting so excited that I have the kids in the car in June with the windows up and the outside temperature at 75.

user-pic
Why the CO2 should increase subsequently is unknown.

As an atmospheric physicist, it is my understanding that the primary reason for CO2 to act as a positive feedback on global temperature is in fact quite well known and based on the incontestable principle that the solubility of gases (such as CO2) in liquids (such as the ocean) decreases with temperature. Thus, if the ocean temperature rises (from say, the planet's slowly changing orbital parameters), CO2 becomes less soluble in the ocean and thus migrates from the ocean to the atmosphere, enhancing the original warming. The same process also works in reverse (amplifying any cooling).

Sadly Gore's excellent movie did not address this point, perhaps because it was considered too difficult to convey. But in the typical paleoclimate temperature swing, CO2 lags temperature. Failing to acknowledge this fact, Gore left an opening for global warming skeptics that was unnecessary and fortunate, since the explanation is not all that complex.

user-pic

Marc Morano is the poster boy for the buddy-boy media-generated fact-grinding process.

I first ran him down when his web site- which is a front for Inhofe, BTW- ran an announcement that a research work by- Marc Morano- had been "submitted for review" at a research center run by the Petroleum Institute, and showed some crap.

But who wrote it? Morano. Who announced it? Morano.

And what was published? Nothing.

But his study appeared all over the denier blogs. It was amazing.

Who is he?

"Marc Morano is communications director for the Republicans on the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Morano commenced work with the committee under Senator James Inhofe, who was majority chairman of the committee until January 2007 and is now minority ranking member. In December 2006 Morano launched a blog on the committee's website that largely promotes the views of climate change skeptics.
Morano is a former journalist with Cybercast News Service (owned by the conservative Media Research Center). CNS and Morano were the first source in May 2004 of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth claims against John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election and in January 2006 of similar smears against Vietnam war veteran John Murtha.
Morano was "previously known as Rush Limbaugh's 'Man in Washington,' as reporter and producer for the Rush Limbaugh Television Show, as well as a former correspondent and producer for American Investigator, the nationally syndicated TV newsmagazine."

Terrific creds from the Right. He was even a Swift Boater.

user-pic

The global warming deniers probably aren't invested to heavily in ocean front property, & I'm sure, won't. But, the TPM blogger obviously hit a nerve.
I don't get the denial crowd, unless it's job security. I mean, even if there were no warming, is constant polluting or over consumption cool?
Are they afraid we might actually move into the 2000's by inventing new technology. Is it because we probably couldn't justify a war with Japan or China to steal their latest gear (read oil)?
This is the bush crowd though, I guess that says it all.

user-pic

Reading this blog just freaked me out a bit I am feeling so disturbed by how much seriously f'd up stuff is going on at the hands of highly unaware, unevolved, passionate people. They are and have been getting away with so much.

This is like Fox taking what the president said in his speech in Egypt last week and cropping the video and making a statement about it to try to make is sound as if the president supported 9/11 sypmathizers etc. (I wrote a blog about that a few days ago and I am so glad that Jon Stewart nailed them for it in his show Monday night!)

With the recent killing of Dr. Tiller these sort of people are are really starting to creep me out... I guess we might want to be more careful what we are saying here since we never know who is watching.
On the other hand if they want to make a point, they'll just twist words and create it that way.

user-pic

We can't please our enemies, I say don't worry about them.

user-pic

I disagree; I ran across this "memoire" of a German who was a child in 1929-

'“Before 1933, the Nazis' comical salute was considered a joke. But we soon stopped laughing. I will never forget the first time I saw this salute, in 1928 or 1929. 1 stood waiting at a streetcar stop, the Mass was over, and a young man in normal Sunday clothes stood next to me. A streetcar came, and a fellow got out wearing a brown shirt, a red armband with swastika, and leggings. The two men looked at each other, threw up their arms, and loudly shouted "Heil Hitler!" Several older people shook their heads but didn’t say anything. I was 12 years old at the time and had no idea what it meant. I asked my father at home. He only smiled and said, "You can forget those assholes; they'll come to their senses." How is it said in Latin? "Errare Humanum est."'

Don't ignore. Don't dismiss.
