McCain on Letterman: cringe-inducing!

Just finished watching McCain on Letterman.  He was so defensive while trying to explain the Ayers attack, and his choice of Palin, I was really cringing and almost feeling sorry for the guy.  Dave really went after him!

His descriptions of Palin's supposed "inspirational" message of "change" probably just made viewers think of Obama.  At one point he said Americans were inspired by Palin because she has done "unusual things," prompting a little bit of laughter from the audience.

Should be lots of good clips coming out of this interview!

I thought McCain came across as a bully. He refused to give a straight answer to anything, he just went on a filibuster full of muddled talking points. By the end of the interview, you could tell Letterman was thoroughly disgusted with him.

I think Letterman started out willing to give him the benefit of a doubt. The more McCain talked, the deeper the hole he dug for himself.

There's just no getting around the fact that he lied to Dave when he said he was rushing back to Washington. His explanation? "I screwed up."

He wasn't just talking about the lie. His whole "suspending the campaign" gimmick was a major screw up. I think he pretty much sealed his own fate when he did that.

Everybody - at least everyone who's willing to open their eyes - sees right through him now.

When he said, 'I screwed up,' it seemed sorta like an apology for the whole campaign. It sounded like a concession. He didn't go into detail about what exactly he had supposedly screwed up; when Dave pressed him, he just repeated the same words. Like maybe it was just a scheduling snafu?!

His answers all night were really inadequate, and I can't see how he addressed any doubts undecided voters might have about him.

Get ready to CRINGE a lot when you watch this one.

Letterman: Did you not have a relationship with Gordon Liddy?
McCain: Um, I've met him, uh, you know, I mean, um ...
Letterman: Didn't you attend a fundraiser at his house?
McCain: That's, that's what ... Is ...

It was like watching a prosecutor grilling a man who everyone in the courtroom knew was guilty.

I don't think he did himself any good with Dave. And Dave won't let up. I bet from now until the election (unless he's running repeats), Dave will hammer McCain every night.

Once again David Letterman gives a tougher interview than just about anyone else could have. Dave seemed noticeably upset with Sen McCain and got very personal talking about what the hell kind of world this would be for his son if McCain/Palin were to be victorious.

Letterman got huge ratings last night, millions of Americans saw him pummel McCain and it was nothing short of beautiful.

Letterman just lost McCain this election by pointing out to his face what a nasty campaign he has run, what a silly campaign he has run, and what a opportunistic campaign he has run.
