From Zogby:

If the individuals involved in these currents have anything in common, it is that they are angry and alienated and have identified "government" as a source of their problems and, therefore, as a target of their wrath.

Behind all of this discontent, of course, are real problems. The economic crisis in America did not just begin with the collapse of the financial sector in the fall of 2008. For years now, the US economy has undergone a steady transformation. The loss of our manufacturing base has resulted in dramatic social dislocation evidenced by the collapse of many once prosperous and stable communities. As factories closed, not only were jobs lost and economic security threatened, but people were forced to move, neighborhoods died and families were at risk.

All during the 1990's, despite gains on Wall Street, many middle class Americans were squeezed. Real incomes declined, costs of health care, education and basic commodities rose, resulting not only in a declining standard of living for many, but, for the 1st time in American history, a significant portion of the middle class began to question whether their children would be able to achieve the same economic status as their parents.

The trauma of 9/11 and Katrina presented a double jolt, shaking to an even greater degree American's sense of security and their confidence in the government's ability to perform.

Add to this a nativist/racist current, fueled by large numbers of immigrants from the south and fear of new foreigners (especially, after 9/11, Muslims) and the persistent presence of anti-black sentiment, and you have the ingredients of the lethal brew that is now coming to a boil.

All of this, however, did not erupt spontaneously, it was helped, fueled by fires set by those who sought, in ways subtle and not so subtle, to exploit the fears afoot across the land. Radical talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Mike Savage, Fox News and even CNN's Lou Dobbs exploited these issues -- as did President George W. Bush's political adviser, Karl Rove, who used it for electoral success. Even Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign playbook tapped into these currents, as did the McCain/Palin campaign strategists.

And so here we are in the midst of a hot summer, with "birthers" fulminating about Obama's "foreignness," angry mobs breaking up town meetings, and polling numbers showing a deepening partisan divide across the nation.

All the while these events are unfolding, analysts and commentators are spending endless hours of airtime observing and pointing accusing fingers, without making an effort to understand how this came to be and where it can go. Some conservatives are surely at fault for thinking they can simply exploit this anger, turning it on and then off, at will. And some liberals, too, are at fault for dismissing the anger they see, suggesting that it is simply manufactured and artificial and, therefore, can be ignored.

I am reminded of similar developments that occurred in 1919 at the beginning of the "Red Scare." Then too, a national movement, fueled by fears of immigration, economic dislocation and wartime anti-foreign bigotry was exploited by some, ignored by others, until it got out of control, with lethal consequences.

If we are not careful and understanding, and if we do not start now, both to address this troubling anger and alienation, and to hold accountable those who are stoking the embers of discontent, we could end up in the throes of a full-fledged nativist siege that could tear apart the fabric of our nation.

I don't normally paste whole swaths of text from someone else. However, since Mr. Farrar has so many reading and rec'ing his musings and those kind of readers would probably never click on a link I provided, I posted a good chunk of it here.
Have fun tearing apart our nation :)

Mage, Mr. Farrar is gaming the system and self recommending. He was insisteng on recommending himself into the top 5 and on front page but since seems to satisfied to keep his posts among 'recommended reader' status.

He is quickly recommending his newest post.

Best to leave it. He cares nothing for facts and is simply acting just like the town hall people in attempting to disrupt the regular course of conversation here at TPM. He has been reported for abuse and many of us are hoping that he will be banned.

user-pic

Thanks for the info Sync, that makes sense now. :)

user-pic

I haven't given James Zogby much credence since the morning I called in to cspan and he accused me of murdering Lady Diana. I'll file this under "blind hog finds acorn".

My mom was never that fat.

user-pic

As a mom, I am horrified at that image. I'm pretty well put together, actually.

1) Do her shorts twinkle?

2) Was his hat free?

3) What's that on the floor beside her sandal - was someone extinguished?

4) Did the finance company provide her the car with the little remote thingie?

5) Is she on socialist Medicare??

David Farrar is not an American citizen, by neither birth nor naturalization. He does not have a green card or other residence permit. In addition to committing felony election fraud, he tries to undermine American democracy and advance the interests of foreign powers under the command of the former(?) Mossad/KGB agent Orly Taitz by spending all his free time logging in and out of sites to use multiple accounts to recommend his posts.

I don't think you should be dismissing the Wisdom of the Crowds so quickly simply as partisan gangs or mobs. I wonder what you would be calling them if they were there supporting ObamaCare?

True, many haven't a clue what is really being proposed. But far from condemning them for their ignorance, it should be looked upon as the cause of their anger -- and a true and proper response to the way Obama has mishandled his Health Care legislative initiative.

Let's go back to how Obama promised he would approach health-care. At a town hall meeting in Chester, Va. back in August of last year candidate Obama had this to say about the important value of public debate regarding health care:

"People say, 'Well, you have this great health care plan, but how are you going to pass it? You know, it failed in '93,' And what I've said is, I'm going to have all the negotiations around a big table. We'll have doctors and nurses and hospital administrators. Insurance companies, drug companies — they'll get a seat at the table, they just won't be able to buy every chair. But what we will do is, we'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process."

More recently at a town hall occasion – again in Virginia - Mr. Obama had the following to say about value of public debate regarding his plan for the nation’s economy:

"I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess.”

Well, for some reason the health care negotiations never made it to C-SPAN, and far more dangerously, Mr. Obama decided to fast-track the biggest social-engineering proposal since FDR's "Social Security" legislation through Congress before many have even read the bill. Indeed, the bill is still being written even as we speak.

Is it any wonder why people are upset? Is it any wonder why people are angry? Is it any wonder why people are coming to the only real public discourse venue many have, their own town meetings, held by their own Congressional representatives?

The really pertinent question is, given the history of this great nation, what is it about Obama and his friends in Congress that would allow them to think their own constituency would react otherwise?

My take on the high number of rec's my posts have been receiving, I think its coming from the left. It's a clever way to game the system to silence people. Simply have a few of your friends recommend a poster in question. Start complaining about gaming the system, reporting the abuse, and presto...the guilty party is taken down from TPM's listing.

As I mentioned on my website, unless We the people come together and start talking to each other, start seeking out our own solutions, our political parties will continue to divide us for the own political purposes.

". . . far more dangerously, Mr. Obama decided to fast-track the biggest social-engineering proposal since FDR's "Social Security" legislation through Congress . . ."

Thank you for drawing that comparison! When I think of the endless nightmare of horror that Social Security has brought down upon our nation, I now understand that I have been wrong to support healthcare reform - it must be stopped!!!

user-pic

ps - Just in case you are doing a little victory dance - the comment above is an example of evil socialist liberal satire. And you never answered my question on that other post - if you are an ex animo, what kind of animo were you previously? More important, do animos have birth certificates?

Hey ... Tommy Tonsillitis . . .

Pick up the white courtesy telephone ... there's a message for you that you have yet to answer over here in your deceptive thread . . .

Not that it will make any difference to such a troublemaker such as you, as you have exhibited by your actions here in the Cafe . . .

OGD - you never bother to answer any of my questions directed at you, so I guess we can call it even.

And here are the

grassroot
progressives,

who have NOTHING to do with astroturfing, and who rise up to the

organized

mobs:

"Help Pass Obama's Health Care Reform!

Earn $325-550 per week! "

user-pic

Thanks for the free advert, this true grassroots operation is in need of your support.

user-pic

You're welcome.

Don't delay another second - you can be part of the officially paid Obama astroturf this summer.

user-pic

It's a shame you don't understand the difference between non-profit support groups (actual grass roots) and corporate sponsored obstructionists (astro-turf).

user-pic

I do understand the difference between genuine grassroots and paid mobs, both the "summer jobs" and SEIU thugs beating up black people.

The Obama ads are the latter, not the former, so spare me your faux grassroot authenticity, liam.

user-pic

Liam was that a former lover perhaps?

user-pic

What in the hell are you blathering about?

The scary, scary craiglist ad you link to is for Fund for the Public Interest. They're a nonprofit that's been around for 25 years. They pay college students to do canvassing for environmental and *gasp* liberal social causes. Yeah, the prospect of flip flop wearing college students armed with a clip board and a bag full of informative flyers is just totally scary and creepy.

user-pic

It occurs to me that I was just assuming that everyone knows what Fund for the Public Interest is. They started as the fundraising arm of the Public Interest Research Groups. They still do that and they still maintain a close relationship with the PIRG's but over the last decade or so, they've they've branched out into doing canvassing for PIRG's and for those scary radical environmentalists at the Sierra Club.

The idea that what they do is equivilent to industry funded front groups who stir up people to distrupt congressional town halls with stories about Obama's evil plan to adopt British style socialized medicine, euthanize old people and Down's babies and prevent people from getting their brain tumors fixed in a timely manner is fundementally dishonest.

user-pic

Your error was assuming that people know *anything*. When half of the political debate is dominated by a group that tacitly endorses the value of ignorance ("jus' plain folks"), that's never a good assumption...

user-pic

Yeah great. And Soros Co, donating millions to "authentic" grassroots, has been around forever too.

user-pic

Bite me.

user-pic

"Wisdom of the Crowds" David this has some validity when the collected wisdom of the crowds is based on truth. Instead the crowds in this case are basing their arguments on mis-information, lies and ignorance. Choosing to believe without question the likes of Fox, Rush, and organize opponents funded and coordinated by large healthcare providers. Providers who have no interest, but to maintain the status quo and their bottom lines. Please point to one thing that most of these folks are screaming about has any basis in fact.

user-pic

They are all for most part uninformed. Now whose fault is that, talk radio or Mr. Obama's?

ex animo
davidfarrar

user-pic

Well when you believe things like old people are going to euthanized. Your bank account is going to be invaded by the Government. Your are going to loose the insurance you have now. etc etc etc I'd say the talk radio, Fox and the healthcare Industry more than Obama.

Now all that said will I agree that Obama and the Dems have not done a very good job of explaining healthcare reform in very simple terms so more people understand what is the ultimate goal? Yes.

If I said to those old folks at these meeting here is all we are trying to do take the Medicare model that you presently have, like and is run by the government and expand to more people. We will pay for it by payroll withholding or you can personally pay the premiums if you are self employed. We are going to cap these premiums at X percent of your yearly income. This X percent is going to be far less than the $11K average per annum you are now paying. If you cannot afford these premiums we will subsidize you until you can. However, if you truly love your private insurance KEEP IT. No questions asked.

Next speaking of private for profit insurance, we are no longer going to allow the insurance companies to turn you down or throw you out. They are going to have to compete with a not for profit. You put yourselves in this position by taking care of profits over your mission so get over it.

user-pic

They wouldn't believe you. You see, the actual Health Care bill hasn't been written yet. There is actually no plan out there for these people to read and debate its costs and effects.

Health Care legislation needs to be transparent and it needs to be taken in steps in order to gradually gain public support. We are talking about legislation that will have an impact on every one's lives in the most intimate of ways. Why should Obama and Congress think people won't be deeply concerned with this legislation; that's the real question here?

Aside from the woman holding the sign, it looks like they are all supportive of the process.

user-pic

Yes, yes, I suspect you are right. It is just a right-wing media illusion that angry crowds have been attending these town hall meetings demanding that ObamaCare be stopped.

Farrar is the Mob on our site, recommending himself left and right. What do we do to restrict Mob abuse here?

Many have complained and naturally want this over.

I'd like to suggest a transcript of the first image

" Yes, people of Salem, I saw what she did, and I swear she's a witch.
We must remove and destroy witches.

Burn baby Burn"

Farrar:

You're not "ex," you're still an animal.

And an unhinged loon.

STFU.

user-pic

Now that's very adult of you.

user-pic

Oh my, David. Those are nice looking people. How could I have been so wrong? Now I know that there are no thugs being put up to shouting and acts of violence by the insurance industry's lobbyists. Now I know I must have misread the memo that showed up on all those teabaggers' websites. And, when those people stood up and started yelling as soon as the congressman started trying to speak, they just wanted to make sure he heard them and didn't try to shout THEM down.

Thank you SO much for showing us how things truly are.

user-pic

LET'S HAVE A CLOSER LOOK AT THOSE POOR CONSERVATIVE VICTIMS OF SEIU BRUTALITY

GLADNEY THE UNINSURED ACTIVIST

Way to make your point, dumbass.

user-pic

I know. Even the uninsured don't want this big Brother "generosity".

user-pic

Or maybe it proves what the 'me-firsters' are saying, that only the lazy and insignificant are uninsured. It sort of messes things up that he's white, though.

user-pic

Even the uninsured don't want this big Brother "generosity".

Because they believe that taking up a collection to pay for health care is an efficient free market process?

The uninsured on the right are clueless. Their politicians, however, are not. Just as in 1993, their whole motive for tearing down universal coverage goes to the prospect of remaining in the minority for the next 40 years.

I'm surprised you don't get that, Lalo.

user-pic

14,000 people a day losing their health insurance, that's gonna be a lot of "bake sales".

user-pic
I know. Even the uninsured don't want this big Brother "generosity".

Only the uninsured who are too dim-witted to realize they are shooting themselves in the foot:

Um..."I'd rather pay thousands to an insurance exec than hundreds in taxes. Why? because I want to carry my gun into a bar, and I want to have FREEDOM! and I love FETUSES! Oh, and Screw babies once they're born if their slutty mothers can't afford health care! Who cares if my insurance disappears if you lose your job --> only LOSERS lose jobs, right? We're WINNING! We are scaring the US population, and that is what it's all about! My Republican pal says I'm doing the right thing and he gave me a ride to this meeting. I can't find his BMW now, for a ride home. OK, I guess I'll have to walk 5 miles. I guess he couldn't find me to give me that ride home he promised."

user-pic

Please don't descend to his level.

Are you somehow implying that old people and sandal wearers cannot take part in violent mobs?

I reject your stereotypes! You know the people who beat us at Vietnam wore sandals sometimes, and i bet some of them were old! Take that!

Or are you trying to imply that these were the only protesters at all the town hall meetings?

user-pic

It's not all old people, though.

It seems to be gender specific.

user-pic

I think you’re onto something Ellen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie_Nation
Carrie A. Nation (November 25, 1846 – June 9, 1911) was a member of the temperance movement—which opposed alcohol in pre-Prohibition America—particularly noted for promoting her viewpoint through VANDALISM. On many occasions, Nation would enter an alcohol-serving establishment and attack the bar with a hatchet.
