My own private Israel

I have written a lot about Israel since I began to blog.

I lived there for nearly a year as a young man and had a very good love there and all the experiences and memories that go with that.

I don't consider myself an "expert" on that country, only someone who loved the place very much... not all the zionut, but the breath of the Tel-Aviv seafront early on a spring morning, my Israeli girlfriend sleeping in my arms, the sweetness of life. Israel is as real to me as the smell of a woman's skin.

In coming to consciousness politically, I am someone who has gone from being very, very, pro-Israel to very anti-Israel and this saddens me more than a little.

I am not kidding myself into thinking that being anti-Israel and anti its influence on American politics is going to be interpreted by most Jewish people as anything other than antisemitism and that saddens me even more.

My stepfather was a pianist, with degrees from Stanford, Harvard and the Eastman School of Music, he had studied composition with Schoenberg and later was one of the pioneers of musical therapy for the mentally ill. In our living room there was a Steinway concert grand. Since we had the piano, practically every weekend there was chamber music in our house
. The participants were either string players from the Chicago symphony or psychiatrists.

It isn't exactly ethnic profiling to note a high incidence of Jewish people among psychiatrists and string players.
They brought their children with them and those were the kids I played with on weekends.

As I turn the question of Israel around in my mind today, I feel that something precious to me has been tainted.

Thank you for sharing that, David. We don't agree on much, but we can agree that having the luster taken off of one's fondest memories is not pleasant.

Oh, please tell me we aren't going there again? I thought the gremlins were through double-posting!

user-pic

sometimes form button submits look as if they did not work, when they actually did. this is usually the fault of the internet connection and not the website, although the website could have some sort of error check routine to assure that an identical post does not get doubled-up. if you press a submit button, and do not get a confirmation, it is best to copy your intended post to a text editor, and then check the original thread to see if it got posted without a confirmation.

user-pic

Thanks, Ant. That's exactly what happened. I didn't get a confirmation, so hit it a 2nd time...bad me.

user-pic

It is sad indeed. I can get pure politics and news in scores of places. But a personal perspective like yours is more than worth the quick read.

Thank you David.

user-pic

Finally you lay yourself on the line. That is hope for you....

user-pic

should be: There is hope for you...

Ah, another injured Bogartian soul damaged by love! Were you then drawn to Spain to fight for the loyalists against the fascists.

You'll always have Tel Aviv, Rick!

It wasn't an insult; it was supposed to be a light-hearted but sympathetic comment. I guess I should have used a smiley face.

user-pic

It seems simplistic to me to talk in terms of pro and con towards one side or the other. Israel was created in a deeply flawed situation, much like India/Pakistan, Ireland/Northern Ireland. In all these areas, there have been intractable partisans and people who feel wronged on both sides ever since.

We've probably left a similar legacy in Iraq.

user-pic

This is what I find maddening about American policy towards Israel. As someone of Irish heritage, it was obvious to me that the American government always balanced the desire for Irish-American votes with the need to have a good relationship with the UK, i.e., Irish voters never got in the way of the larger interests of the US. There seems to be no balance whatever when it comes to Israel.

David, thanks for the heartfelt post. Those early rabbis were prophetic in condemning Zionism as harmful to the Jews and everybody else.

The only way Jews would have worked out living in Palestine is if they didn't create a separate two tiered Jewish state and ethnically cleansed so many people.

They should have realized that they depended on the sympathy of the native inhabitants, regardless of what some ancient book said or who lived there for x many years ending 2000 years earlier.

The creation of a Zionist state and the cleansing was an epic FU, and the original sin of the conflict.

Bob Marley's "War" sums it all up perfectly:

Until the philosophy which hold one race superior
And another
Inferior
Is finally
And permanently
Discredited
And abandoned -
Everywhere is war -
Me say war.

That until there no longer
First class and second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a mans skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes -
Me say war.

That until the basic human rights
Are equally guaranteed to all,
Without regard to race -
Dis a war.

That until that day
The dream of lasting peace,
World citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be pursued,
But never attained -
Now everywhere is war - war.

And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
That hold our brothers in angola,
In mozambique,
South africa
Sub-human bondage
Have been toppled,
Utterly destroyed -
Well, everywhere is war -
Me say war.

War in the east,
War in the west,
War up north,
War down south -
War - war -
Rumours of war.
And until that day,
The african continent
Will not know peace,
We africans will fight - we find it necessary -
And we know we shall win
As we are confident
In the victory

Of good over evil -
Good over evil, yeah!
Good over evil -
Good over evil, yeah!
Good over evil -
Good over evil, yeah! /fadeout/

Look across the entire Arab lands. You will find 99% Muslim and a few persecuted "others". The last Christians are being "cleansed" as we speak. Islam simply will not tolerate others and have been enabled by oil money to assert the rejection.

When the age of oil ends, you'll see a political settlement ... simply because Hez/Hamas/... has run out of funds.

It doesn't matter what Israel does, nice/mean, they just have to hold on until oil is replaced as a primary fuel.

user-pic

"It doesn't matter what Israel does, nice/mean"

Cool, let's grab some more land, tighten the collective noose, and do whatever is necessary to win the demographic war!

Shalom indeed.

user-pic

Before you make comments without any basis you should perhaps do some research into what you are stating.

For example if you knew the history of Jerusalem you would know that after the Babylonians deported all the Jews in Israel, it was the Persians led by King Cyrus who allowed Jews to return to their "homeland".

Further it was muslims again in 633 which allowed Jews to return t Israel and to guard the temple mount.

Jews were allowed to live in peace and harmony with their muslim counterparts for the longest period in Jerusalem's history in Muslim hands.

Islam is the religion of peace, please use your brain and the internet to do some research before you make silly claims.

Christianity and Catholicism is the religion of the sword. Keyword: Crusades.

Stop ignorance, abort your children.
Thanks.

user-pic

"Stop ignorance, abort your children."

Gosh, I feel a whole lot better about Islam now.

user-pic
It doesn't matter what Israel does, nice/mean, they just have to hold on until oil is replaced as a primary fuel.
If that is the key to Israel's survival then, if not exactly cooked, Israel's goose is ready to be tested with a fork.

Israel's most daunting challenge facing the future is the past - or, rather, it's inability to escape the past. It's attempting to recreate an homogenous state, based on common religious values (and, really, ethnicity), in a world that is supposedly moving toward multicultural pluralism. (In reality, the world is much more nationalistic than it ever was, only now the nation-state identity is strongest in the developing world.) To countenance this with acceptance as a modern, western nation, Israel demands a double-standard appraisal of its policies. It can practice apartheid and maintain qualified citizenship status for non-Jews because of Jewish suffering in the past. It can ignore international nuclear agreements because it needs the ultimate weapon to defend itself - because of depredations Jews suffered in the past. It can thumb its nose at international intiatives because those standards failed to protect Jews and Israel itself. In the past. Israel is trapped by its own reality and mythology of victimhood and triumph. And these snares draw their power from the fact they're anything but current; they reach out... from the past.

Well said.

Allow me to tell you a little story. There once was a small boy, not too small, who liked to bully other kids. He pushed, and bit, and shoved until the girl he targeted fell to the ground. A teacher came slowly, but steadily out of the schoolhouse and firmly grabbed the boy by his arm and began to swat on his little behind. At that point a few parents walked around the corner and yelled, 'Stop the madness! Peace! Peace! Let him go!'

How much like the countries and people who are hollering at Israel for defending itself and punishing the bullying?

user-pic

Allow me to quote from another story in which innocents suffer from the conflicts of their elders: "A plague o' both your houses".

user-pic

what are you talking about Bix? Let me get this straight... Israel Occupies a country and "ethnically cleanses" Palestinians from it... and you call Israel the victim? How can you occupy a country and attack someone in it and call it self defense? The jews experienced this before with the Nazi's. How can they inflict this pain on other people when they know what it feels like.

You cant occupy someone's country and talk about defense. If someone came to your home and killed your whole family and injured you and kicked you out.. and you throw rocks at their windows so finally they let you back in and as a settlement, they say fine: you can have the sink.- would you call it an agreement?

Anyways, you can go online and search who's getting killed, who has the power and who abuses it. I have nothing against Israeli people. Only ignorant ones and of course the government. There are plenty Jews against occupation who want peace. Very many actually. In your story, Israel is not the teacher. It's the bully. And to correct your story even further: there is no teacher; no one is stopping israel. There are the parents of course: the people who protest against this war crime, this apartheid and massacre that israel is carrying out.

Not to mention the "swat" Israel is giving palestinians. Maybe in your example, you should have said the teacher used BOMBS to punish the child, thus "defending itself and punishing the bully". How ironic. Is that what Hitler gave the Jews? a "swat"? Seriously. Get real.

So in summary, what you are saying, and your metaphoric story is totally absurd. Please, get your facts straight and stop misinforming people. Israel is not acting in self defense. Your ignorance disgusts me.

user-pic

David give me a break. Your experience in Isreal one of the most advanced nations from science to literature.A nation of civil liberty and democracy, deserves more then your pulp fiction account of your Isreali lover on a Tel Aviv morning.

user-pic

I am not ALWAYS on the side of Israel but I understand their stand and also feel sorry for the Palestinians...so basically Im confused lol.

What my thinking on the situation is....well Israel and her people when the state was created were alot like rape victim...due to the Holocaust and all and the abandonment by the rest of the world...remember it wasnt just Hitler....he said -and I paraphrase,'If ya love em so much YOU take em! Anyone!!" But nobody did and so he felt that nobody would mind.....

Now....they build a state and of course the Palestinians dont want them either...
They were angry and of the mind that No one will help us so we must help ourselves....and they follow eye for an eye...but the trauma of the Holocaust has never healed because if they had 40 or 50 yrs of peace for the more bitter generation to heal and grow old and yes its cold but... die off and their children grow up in peace to live and love and grow a sense of charity...then maybe they wouldnt be so harsh...but they havent.....and now they have destroyed Palestines soul as well...Now two victims view each other as enemies fighting for our lives...

In the book 'Blackhawk Down' the author asked members of different warlords 2 questions

1. Do you want peace??
All responded similarly..."oh yes we are tired of war and of course we want peace we fight for peace"

2. Would you take peace even if (insert name of rival warlords group here) was in control of the government.
All responded similarly again..."Oh no...they are murderers and rapists!"
***
And so answer my question truthfully to yourselves before you judge these people in these kind of conflicts...

If I killed your son, would you forgive me even if my only repercussion was to pay for the funeral?

If I wanted you out of a house i thought should rightfully be mine and I beat up your wife and children on their way home every day or as often as I could in the hopes of you leaving...and the Police response was to say SHAME on you!!.....and you had nowhere else to live, would you be willing to stay nonviolent in your responses???

Or would you retaliate for your survival???

user-pic

P.S. I sincerely want answers to those questions..because since I asked myself those questions... I found my answers disturbing...because I would probably do things that would make Israels responses weak. And Im sure there are better ways but I cant think of any
Other facts you may find very interesting but will probably confuse you even more...google the prime Ministers of Israel...not their history AS prime ministers but their history before what they did and how they rose to that power....and google Yassir Arafat....and find out what he wanted to do with his life and what he studied.

user-pic

I think one of the problems about this nasty situation is that Only Israel has the right to defend itself. Israel has occupied a nation for more than 50 years. It has created an apartheid state with a huge wall separating the two “to stay safe from the terrorist”. It has denied the Palestinians right to a state and the refuges have no right to return to their home land. The number of settlements is increasing, and the life of the Palestinians is miserable as hell. 700 hundred roadblocks/ checkpoints are in effect as we speak, and the Gazans have been deprived from their basic human rights which are food and medical care, for few years now. Israel has a closed all borders from entering or exiting any goods. Can’t you see why Palestinians such as “Hamas” will rise and resist this occupation? Hamas homemade rockets have killed 12 mostly soldiers in the past 12 days and Israel has killed 680 and more to come. Hamas was the elected government in Palestine, now if Israel is not happy about it it has no right to bomb innocent people and close the borders to ambulances and medical care. This is an illegal war and Israel is committing war crime and it still blames the victim.

David
You are a dirty Anti-Semite; you are exactly the type that would fit well with the SS or some other antiemetic organization. The things you say are not only dumb but also ethnocentric and pointless. The Jews deserve their country just like any other ethnicity and the Palestinians need to stop shooting rockets and committing acts of senseless acts of violence against the Jewish people. Please refrain in the future from writing antiemetic nonsense on websites it only makes you look ridiculous.

BillWalker - I love that song. But its not Bob Marley's song...the lyrics are from a speech given by the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Salassie....and the comparison couldn't be further off the mark. Ethnic Cleansing?!? Jews are ethnic cleansing?!? In an are where they amount to a frcation of 1% of the population....and have been nearly killed off several times. There is a BIG difference between "ethnic Cleansing" and simply trying to survive as a people!!
Arabs in Israel are afforded many many more rights in Israel than they are in most Arab countries! It is sad to see so many people's perception skewed by media.
- In most Arab countries the leaders live a plush life while the citizens struggle to survive below poverty level. In this case it is easy to blame Israel and the "Politics" instead of looking in the mirror.
- Most arab nations have openly stated that they seek the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people. Has Israel said the same about any nation? Would anyone in the world not fight hard if someone made that statement about them?
- Many many Arabs live happily in Israel. A life with greater success and options than they would have in any Arab nation. How many Israelis live in Gaza? Or would be welcome in a Palestinian state? none...unless they are POWs.

I encourage you to watch the attached video:
http://www.terrorismawareness.org/what-really-happened/

Please watch it and feel free to check the references....rather than just reading propoganda headlines....

user-pic

yeah im sure those 700 children killed in Gaza by Israeli troops were potential terrorists. I already said, a lot of Israeli's are peaceful. And maybe arabs of Israel ('48) have more rights than those in arab countries. But thats besides the point. Isreal is in violation of UN legislation and is convicted of war crime. Don't try to deny this fact. Don't call stealing people's homes and lands an act of self defense. That in itself is terrorism. Israeli's obviously dont "live in Israel.. Thats dangerous given the political situation. They only OCCUPY it... kill people in it, maintain hundreds of check points and cut off essential supplies necessary for survival such as meds/water etc.

Obviously Israeli's are not going to be welcome to a Palestinian state! Look what they're doing to the people there!! You think this war just started yesterday? Or a week ago? You think Israel came to Palestine with loving open arms and the Palestinians rejected them? Review your history.

So please... dont talk rubbish and say that arabs have a better life in israel and that poor old Israel is getting kicked around by everybody. dont say all that and totally disregard the new Holocaust taking place in Gaza now. Don't even try to say Israel killed 700 people, mostly consisting of women and children as an act of self defense. And finally, don't spread hateful misinformative media. We've all heard the American/Israeli stance on the situation. Maybe its time to eliminate the bias.

Thanks.

Noone wants to see innocent people killed - regardless of race or religion. But it is not *solely* Israel's fault. A few quick points:
- Arab leaders use their people as pawns. And that is the true shame.
- Why? People in chaos are much easier to control than people that are organized. It benefits the Arab world to keep Israel in a state of chaos at the expense of the Palestinians. Unfortunate but true.
- Example: Israel announces that it is launching attacks on Hamas and its leaders. It launches a missle and kills a Hamas Leader and, unfortunately, many of his children and wives that he - for some reason - kept with him during the bombings. That is the headline. HOW COULD ISRAEL KILL A MAN'S INNOCENT FAMILY?? This same man sent his own son into Israel as a SUICIDE BOMBER - he brainwashed his own son - and many other innocent arab children - into killing themselves. This is a fact.....but of course not headline worthy.

- Why did he keep his children and wives with him when he knew he was a target? Why didn't he put them somewhere away from himself? BECAUSE HE USED THEM AS PAWNS IN A PROPOGANDA WAR.

- Please explain the "Misinformative Media" comment. It didn't seem hateful to me. Clearly Pro-Israel but not hateful towards anyone. Please explain specifically which parts were hateful or misinformative.

Historically, genocide and the elimination of Jews has been attempted - many many times....almost continually. If they sit back and let up ONE BIT - tanks will come rolling across the borders as they have in the past.

user-pic

Awesome post. I like how you illustrate a logical unbiased account of a political struggle which is dividing a world. On top of which you give a personal attachment for the land and its people.

To the people defending Isreals assault, justifying it with 'logic' or reason, I say this.. Regardless of any point you produce, Hamas has killed 20 innocent Isreali people in five years from rockets. Isreal killed 20 just yesterday (14 of which from one attack). This is not logical or reasonable. This is genocide.

user-pic

I agree with Rayray.

user-pic

I wish it was that simple. "You killed more people yesterday...so you are more guilty." Let's ignore the fact that Israel is a minority surrounded by Arab nations that have attempted to invade and defeat them and "drive them into the sea"....for hundreds of years. This is a clear indication that the propoganda war is being won by the Arabs....at the expense of the Palestinians.

"Hamas has killed 20 innocent Isreali people in five years from rockets" - Correct. Because this is all that they are capable of since Israel has kept them at bay. If they could kill more, they would...and they have openly stated that. Let's not feel bad for them just because they are "less successful" at murdering people.

"Isreal killed 20 just yesterday (14 of which from one attack)." True - but the person who "pushes the button" is not necessarilty **solely** at fault. The Arab governments are just as guilty for putting "their people" in harms way for their own personal benefit.

I'm not Anti-Palestinian...I'm just anti-propoganda. Both sides are guilty. Let's be real.

user-pic

Genocide. Ethnic Cleansing. Apartheid.

These are words that Israel and the Jews are very familiar with. It is incredibly biased and myopic to accuse Israel of any of these.

When blindly throwing these accusations out there, please explain it in the context of the greater Middle East (not just the "Plestinians")....where Muslim/Arab countries are actively "cleansing" and creating strict Muslim governments where their citizens have limited rights. And that each of these countries has stated their sole goal as the destruction of Israel and the elimination of the Jews.

Someone - Butterfly, RayRay, San Fernando - any of you making these statements, please clarify this for me.

I feel horrible for any innocent people that are killed - Arab, Jewish, Israeili - anyone. It is a horrible atrocity. But it is not at the hands of Israel as the media would have you believe. It is as much or more the fault of the Arab governments and leaders that benefit from this maintained state of chaos.

I am sorry that it is not as simple as we would like.

user-pic

Did you nots, facts not spin, that in all your arguments you basically say: so what if israel is killing hundereds of people? The arabs are doing worse.

Thats not really the most convincing argument ive heard. And by the way, Israel didnt just happen to be in the midst of all those arab countries. Israel went in to invade and occupy that country. So those are the obvious consequences of trying to occupy an arab country with obvious arab countries surrounding it.

What does a strict "muslim" government in the middle east states have to do with what Israel is doing in Gaza today? You can't say their sole purpose is to destroy Israel and the Jews when there is noe evidence. Do you see Saudi Arabia, or Iran or Jordan or Egypt firing missiles at Israel? Like I say, review your history.

two wrongs don't make a right. If you're gonna talk about Islamic goals, maybe you should show some evidence. Otherwise, I can also say that the Jewish people believe they are the "chosen ones" and that their blood is deemed to be more precious than any other blood. That's not a good argument, but its a bit like yours. Though I have many Jewish friends and neighbors and don't see these characteristics in them, but those involved in the occupation couls make me believe otherwise. Of course this may be something that is taken out of context and many can argue against it. But it is a commonly accepted belief, just as you believe muslims have the sole goal of "destroying israel". So let's not talk about religion.

Finally, the accusations are not blind. Turn on the news and you'll see where its all coming from- except if you're watching CNN, Sky News or CTV Rightists but maybe if you watched whats happening on the other side, you wont hear the biased justifications (i.e., Al Jazeera). Actually, a lot of the media is on the side of America and Israel so most of the time you will hear their perspective and how its justified.

So here's some clarification which you asked for, in terms of propaganda, which you so strongly oppose:

Peace, Propaganda, & the Promised Land.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6604775898578139565

Noam Chomsky, Gila Svirsky, Alisa Solomon, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Neve Gordon, Major Stav Adivi, Robert Fisk and many more.

"Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported."- Media Foundation

Before you decide not to watch this movie, for thinking it's another one of those typical anti-Semite movies that will just waste your time, you should see how unbiased it is knowing who the film makers are:

"Filmmaker Info

If you want something shorter, watch George Galloway on the Rightist Sky News:

I rest my case.

user-pic

Great response. I appreciate the dialogue and I will definitely watch these movies. Did you watch the link I posted? Let me address a few points:

-I never said two wrongs make a right. I simply said that it is interesting that the Arab world accuses Israel of these atrocities while at home they are committing some of the same atrocities on their own people. Again, if you are a woman, I invite you to walk down a street in any arab nation and let me know how you feel. Then go to Israel and do the same.

-I never said "so what if Israel is killing.." Please do not put words in my mouth. I would never say that. I stated that killing by any of the nations is an atrocity. I said - it is not *solely* the fault of Israel. There is equal fault in the arab leaders who perpetuate this war. There has been many many offers that were refused. If the arab nations would allow ANY land to Israel and the Jews - then this conflict would not exist. The arabs are trying to push out the Jews not vice-versa!

-Regarding the media: It is known in the US that media coverage is generally Anti-Israeli not Pro-Israeli...not sure where you heard otherwise. I challenge you to show me a news article in the recent news that is Pro-Israel.

-Israel never invaded anyone and took their land. In most recent history, they were given the land by the British government after they were driven from their homes and nearly eliminated.

-A few nice quotes:
1. “The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews.” - Hamas Covenant

2. "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it" - Hamas Covenant

3.Israel is a cancerous tumor, and we shall never put up with it.- Imam Khomeini

4."We will not bend or fail until the blood of every last Jew from the youngest child to the oldest elder is spilt to redeem or land!” - Yassar Arrafat

5.“As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
