Dr. Reich, I'm a big fan of yours and am very willing to buy your argument for this approach of going for the stimulus and the deficit be damned.

But I must add that your brush-off of the latter as part of your argument is not a good idea if you really want understanding on this subject. Look, don't forget how it was the 1992 election - with Perot and, God love him, Bill Clinton - when we all learned ad nauseum how the deficit really mattered. And after Clinton got into office and addressed it, we seemingly went into a good long period of prosperity. And he attributed his focus on the deficit as a winning strategy.

So I think you and others who are out there working hard to ensure our support now of the stimulus package approach need to be sensitive to our "training" by previous Democratic braintrusts that addressing deficits is THE strategy for economic recovery. Once you help us get through this 180-degree change in direction, you can be sure we'll keep going with you - full speed!

Here's one for the record books...I live in New Jersey near the PA border and signed up to volunteer for Obama's campaign in Bucks County, PA for the night before and the day of (today) the election. I'd had much experience on election eves and election day with both the Kerry campaign and the Gore campaign in Levittown, PA and remembered the thrill of all that semi-chaos in the campaign offices, with people jamming into the rooms awaiting some sort of assignment and folks everywhere - so tight you could hardly breathe sometimes - asking to offer rides and canvass neighborhoods and such. With Gore's campaign, I was up all night with others hanging doorknob-reminder-cards in the glow of flashlights in condo complexes and homes all over the area...

So I expected the same wildness for Obama. Not so! Last night, election eve, I appear at my assigned Bucks County location at 5pm and a quiet office of folks tells me there's nothing - nothing! - for me to do because all that needed to be done was done. So many volunteers had shown up earlier, I was literally beaten out of an assignment. Yo! I was stunned and pleased and, then again, stunned. But they said to appear the next day at 8am and there'd be things to do.

This morning, at 8am promptly, I appeared and did, indeed, get lots of home-by-home canvassing work with the reminder cards and such, and I spent all morning and all afternoon carrying out these assignments, but I always marveled at the quiet of the campaign office (the "staging area") upon my returns several times throughout the day to deliver my lists and report them complete. Are you folks all sitting around here stoned? is all I could ask while laughing, and they laughed, too. "It's all under control," they responded, in sort-of a blase manner.

There are something like 13 such Obama "staging areas" in Bucks County alone, and that was WAY more than I recall from the Kerry and Gore years. Lord, has Obama's people got it under control or what? I sure hope they know what they're doing! We'll know soon enough...
