"Stock market crashes; Debacle linked to Jews, Negroes, Catholics, anarchists, foreigners, women voters"

That's the October 29, 1929, headline from The Onion's Our Dumb Century. The sub-headline is:

Millions thrust into desperate poverty. Wall street fat cats blameless, say financial experts

You may wish to cite this when a conservative blames CRA and ACORN for the current mess.

Some conservatives blame affordable housing

It's not surprising that the Republicans will cherrypick history, find ways that liberals may have contributed to the financial crisis, and try to lay the blame on them. Granted (in the spirit of thoughtfulness rather than concern trolling), I expect that the story behind the credit crisis really is a bipartisan story in a not-insignificant way, that the Republican finger-pointing claims are not entirely without merit. But I'm also certain that theirs is a self-serving scapegoating account of the story. Consider the following links:
1. Conservative blogs link to a NY Times story from 2003, in which Bush recommends regulation of Fannie and Freddie but Barney Frank opposes it; Frank says those institutions are healthy and speaks in defense of affordable housing.
2. The about.com US politics blogger reviewed Fannie Mae-related legislation from 2003-04 and concluded that the Republicans only gave lip service to financial reform.
3. Keith Ellison claims there is scapegoating of the minorities and the poor going on. Ellison references events from earlier than 2003.

We should all get Friday off ...

... so we can go to Washington, set aside our differences, and help out with the crisis on Wall Street as best we can.

Slogan idea: "Support our troops: Pay your taxes!"

The Star Tribune (MN) has an article titled, Biden says paying higher taxes gives wealthier Americans a chance to be patriotic. At one point, linking to that story, their home page had abbreviated this headline to something like, "Biden: Paying higher taxes is patriotic." I think that's plusungood. The editors evidently went back and added "for the wealthy" to that home page link text...but in any case I think that this idea makes for a highly risky sound bite. Any idea that smacks of wealth redistribution in this country is subject to vicious attacks. I very much hope that this doesn't distract from the overall economic message of the Obama campaign. Clinton did it much more smoothly with his line about making the rich "pay their fair share."

So you can see why  I think the idea of "Support our troops: Pay your taxes!" might be useful.

Slogan idea: "Real solutions, not bullhockey"

"Bullhockey" is a shoe that fits, and it resonates nicely with the "hockey mom/pitbull" joke.

A picture is worth a thousand words

I think people are sick of discussing Sarah Palin in words. I think that screencap pics of her looking scared in that Gibson interview (e.g., http://monkey.org/sl/b7273dc4) can communicate a great deal.

What's Korean for "maverick?"

The MinnPost news site has an interesting piece on the foreign press and the Republican convention. According to the story, the Germans seemed confused by the very notion of a war hero. And someone who worked with the foreign journalists is quoted as saying: "The South Koreans tried about three different translations for maverick...and all they could come up with was 'traitor.' "
