MOST FOLLOWED USERS?
I was floating around, and just happened to notice the list of the "most followed users," and I realized that many of them haven't posted anything for quite some time. I wonder if it might be more helpful -- if there is to be a list at all -- that the list reflect the most "hits" on blogs posted by people? Or the most recommended?
I ask this as someone who doesn't regularly blog -- only when I feel I have something to say, and so I am not in contention here. I just wonder what the point is of having old, moldy lists of people who have moved on as "most followed users." It seems to me it doesn't provide any useful information.
Ideas?

We might have an active users and an historical users list. We could also have the most recommended too. I don't think everyone knows how to follow. It's another step, but recommending is pretty straightforward.

Well Cville, if I waited to blog, I mean if I had to wait until I actually had something to say...I mean well then. I would not make it on any list.
hahahahahaha!!!

DD, You have GOT to be kidding! Every blog you post astounds me! When I say that I wait until I have something to say, I mean it. I don't have as many original ideas as you do. Never stop!
In My Humble Opinion, YOU should be at the top of the list!
For those of us old timers, it doesn't matter about a list; I am only thinking of new people who might find it helpful to have a list that is more contemporaneous. Not meant to be in any way a put-down.
eg, as much as I miss Genghis, he is high up on the list, but I haven't heard from him in a long while! He has moved on.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Everyone has their own idea of who has something of value to add to the conversation, and 'most followed' is little more than a popularity contest, (a beauty contest in disguise?). I'm with Lis in that I follow some hoping they will return, (hat tip to Lux, hreb), and others I don't follow, (fly), hoping they haven't disappeared forever. Given continued inactivity on the board we would all disappear from the list in time. In the end the list serves little purpose IMO. Perhaps the aim is to stoke the egos of TPMs perception of their 'top producers' so they keep producing content free of charge. If that's the case then perhaps Josh should reconsider as there are a few names on the list who have been largely absent for some time, though Lux possibly suffered some physical disability which puts him in a different category regarding the ability to 'produce'. TheraP, one of the most followed users, has criticized the system on more than one occasion. One thing I can say, having come from obscurity to a position on the 'most followed' list is that it does nothing to bolster ones' arguments on the board, so if one is being intellectually honest, it serves no real purpose , at least in my own estimation. I like the concept of 'most recommended', but would caution that perhaps that measurement should only account for the most recent time period, (three months, six months?), as otherwise those who have been posting for long periods of time would be weighted very heavily in their position on such a chart. My final thought is that there are a whole lot of names not on that list that are my favorite voices here, and their lack of ranking does nothing to diminish my admiration for their unique voice in this ongoing dialogue known as TPM.

Free of charge? Hell, I get $10 a blog, and 16 cents per follower-week (plus COLA, dental and 3 weeks vacation.)

Flyonthewall disappeared the day his true identity was known. Fly apparently published a blog under his own name, sent it to the Atlantic Monthly blogger and was inadvertently outed. Given his true identity, I was surprised he was careless with his TPM ID.
I doubt he will be back here for that reason.

Totally OT, but I really hate the fetish some people have with fucking-over anonymous contributors. It sucks to be robbed of the benefit of an insightful poster because of someone's petty insecurity. I refuse to read that cafe asshole who started an "I won't respond to anonymous users" pissing match.
On a related note, I think it's an absolute hoot when folks start trying to chase down "sock-puppets".
(Full disclosure: I'm a nobody ... my anonymity was originally a product of being too lazy to fill out my profile. :-)

Yez.
If a post has merit it stands alone free from the personality of its poster. The Founding Fathers {Salutes the flag} often wrote critiques the same way. I'm not saying I'm gonna find anything, but I have no interest in really knowing who wrote a piece except to be able to find other things they may have written, so I hope they would use the same names. Other then that, their personal info is irrelevant, unless and until they care to share it.

I haven't seen the list in quite awhile, don't care to. I read a lot and write a lot less, am interested in what folks have to say and how they say it. Who is "following" whom is of no importance to me whatsoever.

And I really miss the "unread comments" feature. It was so easy to scan old posts and see if new comments had been added.

Agreed. The old system was much better. With following I have to wade through tons of comments may or may not interest me and which
I may or may not already have seen. In the old system I could see at a glance if there was any new discussion.
Plus I liked the rating system -- I could say good job without posting a relatively contentless item.

Here's a comment supporting my point about recommended. I see great posts with maybe a dozen recommends and I think there were probably more people who read them and liked them then recommended them merely because it was a stap. As for Following, that is an even more "complicated" step for lazy, disaffected Americans. Even though that characterization applies to few here, the apathy of our fellow citizens effects/affects (I'm too apathetic to actuaslly diagnose which one applies) us all, even if insidiously. Me? It impacts me sometimes more obviously.

Are you saying I'm lazy and disaffected? Not sure why you are replying to me with this point. Some of us just drop in for a few minutes each day and don't have time to "study" the site. And sweetmolly, thanks for being helpful. I found it. I don't ever go to my dashboard.

Apologies. There are other reasons not to explore the details of this site or any site for that matter. Me? I found out most of what I know about this system at TPM over a long period of time. And I know there is much more to learn. Frankly, I have always been slow to adopt new technology. I have no cell phone and just obtained a personal computer only last year. I did not mean to offend, just wanted to point out to TPM if they read this that it is wise to use the most expeditious means to accumate data of interest, i.e. on one screen, then to have to click around on several. It's not that clicking is all that hard. It's having to learn where to click for what. Frankly, I prefer it all on one page whenever possible.

Personally, even when I was posting quite a lot, I found the list bothersome - except to go quickly to someone's blog - if they happened to be on the list. The list appeared last Fall. In my view it has led, in some cases, to attacks on people who rose up the list - simply for appearing to be "popular" - a category I have never sought and often fled from.
I have long advocated some other kind of list, as you suggest. A new list each week. Or some other feature. Or no list at all. The Cafe worked perfectly well without a list before.
I assure you I would not mourn the loss of the list. I'm glad I happened along to recommend your post and make this comment.
Peace to all.

I'd love a hit counter, just to know if anyone reads my stuff. I'd probably write it anyway, but it's great to know when there's someone at the other end of all those words.
I'd like to have tpm revive the possibility of emailing readers through the site. Such would allow a person to share e-mail addresses with those with whom they wished to share them...years ago that was an option. If Craig's List can do it, we should be able to do it. :-)
July 13, 2009 12:02 PM | Reply | Permalink
A hit counter would interest me, too. I'm still finding my way around here and I am interested in what gets clicked on, read, or ignored.
I saw someone's e-mail address listed in their bio. To prevent spamming, you could list it as smart guy at hellokitty.com.

The "unread comments" bit is of interest to me. could it be resurrected? I quit following very quickly for the reasons AJM listed.
July 13, 2009 12:24 PM | Reply | Permalink
A hit counter would be good. As would be a separate dashboard for responses to one's comments so that drawn out discussions are easy to keep up with. The top reader list is utterly pointless (if I want to know something about a certain commenter, such as how popular he is, I'll see it on his home-page). It takes up room on the dashboard that could go to providing a longer list of recent posts. That would make navigating the café somewhat easier, and would also permit the keeping reader posts up for more than the current 24 hour limit...

Good ideas all -- unrelated to the precise topic, I still really miss two old features:
1. Comments that I haven't read a slightly different color from those I have so I could cruise down a long thread and pick up comments not made to me, but of interest nonetheless. It is just too much trouble to do that with really long threads because I end up re-reading stuff that I didn't intend to.
2. Ditto re the "unread comments" as above.

DITTO from another pre "upgrade" regular.
(Well, except for the ratings thingie which I only used one time to counteract an unfair "down rating" ie awarding zeros. My mistake as it turned out.....)
Another note; although their were "Reader Blogs" under the old system, there wasn't an us vs them dynamic that I've seen here re the left and right page commenters. I suspect the popularity contest aspect of the current system contributes....``
There was a mechanism for approval (by "trusted users"..whoever they were) of certain reader blogs to be selected and segmented into a specialized tab under pre-determined relevant categories. One had to submit one's own blog for consideration and it was "voted" in by somebodies.
In practice, the special designation didn't make all that much difference in driving traffic to those "special status" Reader Blogs as far as I could tell. One great convenience was the ability to find discussions of technical TPM issues confounding/confronting users.
The highlighted "unread comments" feature is the one that I miss the most.....sigh.

I think the whole concept of "Most Followed Users" is hooey. I would even change the term "follow" to something more like "connect" or "share."
I don't know what that list is supposed to accomplish other than to keep eyeballing and posting in order to build more followers and redeem them for valuable prizes. Or something. Also.

I like the idea of separating out comments made to my posts versus comments made by people I happen to follow.
I remember about ten days ago someone saying they wished they could "unfollow" someone. Perhaps a prolific poster who died of CRT exposure, or something. Or someone who turned shrill since being followed; happens all the time.
For the digital natives in our midst...I mean Cathode Ray Tube.

It's nice that they built in support for us paranoid people. I used to have a hard time keeping up with who all was following me. Now i have a handy list.
I do wish it would also list agency affiliation (NSA, FBI, CIA, Illuminati, etc). But I guess it's kind of fun to try and guess the agency each person is from.
(I'm guessing DickDay is from the League of Women voters...they have been riding my ass like chocolate riding on uhh milk duds. I think they're trying to prevent me from talking about the conspiracy between the Reptilians and H.R. Willmington, the cracker magnate, to corner the graham cracker market using alien marketing technology).

OK. I have a suggestion that gets to the heart of this:
Josh et al should pick a few TPM regulars who they see have the best interest of the site in mind; they should invite those 5 - 10 people to a (limited) open forum to discuss TPM. Improvements, successes, problems, and goals. Kind of like an unpaid Board of Non-Directors. Input only, and it would be rotating, so that no one would remain like a Supreme Court Justice.
How about that for free advice and counsel? We have people here who are cyber-geniuses, and others who just are good at practical suggestions. It could be just once a month so as not to be too much of a pain in the ass.
Anyhoo, just an idea!
