TPM Limerick Contest
Come one, come all, and fear not!
I wanted to make this non-political, but this first one just came to me and I had to put it out here:
There once was a man named Dick Cheney...
A guy who loved to inflict pain, he
Shot his friend in the face--
Oh, What a disgrace!
His next gig should be convict trainee.
These are the rules:
1. No rules!
2. Have fun!

There are some people
But not really that many
Who can scales the topmost heights
Of true evil like cheney
He sent young people
To a ridiculous war
To provide money
To the people he once worked for
Investigations by commissions
Provided nothing but a lot of paper
And dicky just proceeds
Like he was never part of a caper
But merely doing what was best
For a nation so blessed
With his supervision and
His mere presence

There once was a party aglow
In time, we all knew it was show
The party in question
enthralled with suppression
was really the party of 'No'!
What kind of a party is this?
Asked the revelers 'No' had put at risk.
Two wars, and their savings aflame,
The people they cried
For more than just lies
This party was beyond being lame.
But the party was devoid of thinkers
Gray matter lost to the habits of drinkers
They tried to explain
How the Dems were to blame,
Ideas, all agreed to be stinkers.
Now, the party that picks up the pieces
Hopes the damage 'No' wrought soon ceases,
But the Party of 'No'
Had many 'no' seeds to sew
We just hope that the suffering soon eases.

I'm made of stuff that doesn't feel a need to sit around making limericks. Especially since the goad is to write something nasty in return.
I'm only pointing out how we often hear on these boards "live and let live" etc and yet when a seemingly innocuous blog like yours comes up, it degenerates on it's very own.
That is telling.
I suggest when you look at the right wing and wonder where their mean spirited-ness comes from, you needn't feel so above it yourselves.

By the way, I have noticed that not one person has told Old Grouch to back off. Not one.
Now I understand most of you have issues with my views -- or even how they are expressed -- but Grouch has been pretty relentless about pounding me for the sheer pleasure of it. And without any provocation from me.
I know this group (and I'm talking to the TPM clique here because that's really the group reading this thread) like to think of itself as high minded and principled. But the fact is that this thread proves differently and in actuality, the posters here are clannish, protect their own, and have double standards of behavior.
Much like the people they often complain about.
I've seen over and over again here about what allowing torture says about America.
Well, what does this thread -- where a single poster talks with pride about bullying -- say about *you*?
Just some food for thought.
June 7, 2009 6:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
OK, I think it's time to lay off, and let CT alone. I know he/she can be cantankerous, and today is no exception. But this is for fun, so I vote for giving the dude a break.
June 7, 2009 6:34 PM | Reply | Permalink
Oh, no... you don't get off that easy.
You have people that immediately came on this thread and started trashing me.
Again, I really don't care as you are a bunch of anonymous posters.
But it's totally inconsistent with the behavior elsewhere. I'm sure one person here will say "fight your own battles" -- but that never seems to be the case when they want to defend someone else.
Of course, it really does reflect on the whole group when you let things like this go.
And I'm sure people will talk of hijacking the thread, but, sorry boys and girls, Old Grouch made several posts (and after LisB and Bwak) that went after me. So pointing this out is hardly "hijacking".
Indeed, I wasn't even going to post anything on this thread but not for LisB and Bwak's passive aggressive behavior.
Either you are for good community standards or you are not.
But just like all the people you want to convict from the Bush Administration, Old Grouch gets a pass. Sorry, CVille, you can't just say it's my issue unless you are into blaming the victim...
... and I can think of a few places where you really hate it when someone blames the victim.
That's the very nature of hypocritical and community double standards.
Groups protect themselves. That's why your comment pretends the issue is about me, rather than the group and it's lack of reaction to Old Grouch's posts. I'm being cantankerous? Why not look above and see what is written about me.
I merely observe the behavior here.
But what comes back is a priceless study of social behavior from some (not all, but some) very broken individuals.
June 7, 2009 6:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
OK, you really remind me of a 13 year-old who doesn't understand why he is unpopular just because he goes around giving noogies to everyone and running his fingernail down the blackboard. I feel a little bit sorry for you, but I'm just going to ignore you from now on; you are too annoying.
ON WITH THE LIMERICKS!
My uncle, a Scotsman named Les
Said my family created a mess
When, as pirates they stole,
Lots of booty: BEHOLD!
But one chap named Tad, wore a dress!
June 7, 2009 6:59 PM | Reply | Permalink
No, CVille, go above and read the limerick from Old Grouch that talks about laughing as I'm burned on a funeral pyre.
If I wrote that about someone here, people would be hitting the "Report Abuse" button.
Of course, your reaction to your internal cognitive dissonance is to ignore me.
But I believe you should re-read this thread and see the type of behavior on display.
Here's the point:
I'm sure it's a lot of fun to write about how America tortures and it's terrible and what not, especially when the group agrees with you. But when it comes to pulling the wings off of flies yourself, you don't see the connection. Somehow the rules only apply to the abstract, and especially about others, than to you.
(And when I say "you" here, I don't mean you in the singular but the plural.)
One possible reason you find me annoying is that part of your knows I'm right.
I admit that you are a cut above and opened up the blog in a spirit of fun. See where your fellow clique members went, however. Don't blame me for that.
June 7, 2009 7:09 PM | Reply | Permalink

Let me spell it out, CT. People cheer OG on BECAUSE... you're a prick. That's the reason, the single feature that makes all the difference in the world. It really is - Just. That. Simple.
People keep telling you you're behaving in ways which are nasty and anti-social. And you keep telling them they're wrong, and they're just a clique. You then continue to engage in ways which are condescending, personally abusive, chickenshit, passive-aggressive and hypocritical. But you don't CARE about your social transgressions, do you? You're the grand man, too important for these puny "rules." You live above them.
But after all that posing, you wanna whine like a little calf when OG insults you? Are you kidding? Now you become the poo poo lil VICTIM with the boo boo? Grow up. Go outdoors. Get a life. Read some new books. Whatever. Go French F*ck yourself with a stick.
But above all, stop being such a pathetic little suck. You make me barf.

Old Grouch is just a cranky guy who, interestingly, started attacks on my ability to get it up. That's interesting in it's own right. It's no big deal. That's not the point.
Once more: I don't much care for what anyone writes here about me in terms of keeping me up at nights, or even up during the daytime.
What I am talking about is the general hypocrisy of people here talking about caring, etc. and then going out and finding their own dog to kick.
It's hard to imagine how you feel I condescend to you when you talk about vegetables in orifices -- and think you are the Lenny Bruce of TPM.
But you know what? Rape victims have it coming to them too, right?
And you know what? If you can't afford health insurance, then that's a clear sign that God's plan for you is to be sick...perhaps die.
And you know what? Everyone deserves what they gets.
That's pretty much the gist of your argument. If you are poor, you weren't smart enough to elevate yourself. If you are sick, you don't know how to maintain your health. If you are tortured, you shouldn't have been fighting in the war.
I get it, thanks. I can't wait to pull it out as needed.
Oh, by the way, there are those here that get that bullying and abuse for sheer provocation isn't good, no matter who the target is. I've heard from a few people, too, you know. ;-)
Now remember to drink lots of water so you don't dehydrate during your barf.

OK, even though I said I would ignore you, I am going to take you back in time, and cut & paste the limerick that got you going:
Nothing mean-spirited here in my opinion; Liz was just recalling an extended argument from yesterday where you told her she was pretty much dim-witted and unworthy of debating you. There isn't even an indication of someone being right and the other being wrong...
Again, unless your ego is on a hair-trigger, not mean-spirited or cruel in any way; that is how she felt about your comments, and if you go back and read what you said to her, certainly "jerking around" is not hyperbole.
Downright self-effacing! This is a way that many adults deal with people who are yanking their chains if they don't want to get into a brawl. It happens all the time here, and is not aggressive, in fact it is the opposite.
An empathetic comment.
So this limerick that Liz put into our "fun" blog drove you to another effort at highjacking a thread over your wounded feelings. This little limerick, which is completely innocent and not in any way aggressive or hateful started your tirade.
I don't want to hear about the pyre, or anything else. That was in response to your self-absorbed attempt to ruin an otherwise cheekily fun thread. You had a 2x4 on your shoulder when you showed up. You were looking for a fight, and then claimed victim status when some people knocked it off your very sensitive shoulder.
You need to look within to figure out where the demons are coming from, because it really isn't productive to be the one who rains on every parade, and it doesn't help you get your points across either. And when I went to bat for you and said, let's forget all this stuff and give you a break, you chastised me -- you really are your own worst enemy, believe it or not.

Wriggle and rationalize all you like...
The point is that it was the only negative one on this board. Just imagine if I had wrote that about someone else. There would have been hell to pay. Now, was this very nasty? No. But I also merely noted that it started your thread down a dark path.
Without any of my help.
But if you prefer, how about going after the Old Grouch's one (which I've mentioned several times):
I'm pleased to see this bothers you enough to write about it. Deep down you see the double standards being foisted.
When you wonder about why people don't see the logic in your political views, remember how hard you are clinging to notions of the community here.

Wow! Projecting much? I never called or implied LisB was dim-witted. I did say she wasn't giving me much to discuss except lame one liners.
Please don't put your ideas into my mouth.
No wonder you have an issue with me!

Lots of people read these threads that aren't part of any in group. There's a bit of mobbing here that's unappealing but after your performance on Stilli's last thread you should have expected more push back. As much as I'm against the mobbing I can see how you're drawing it to you.
I thought the silliness of your arguments had gone as low as possible as you tried to defend the idea that all christians were alike. But you hit a new low when you commented that the 50+ crowd was just to slow to understand computers and technology and was dropping to their knees to pray out of fear of death. Pretty insulting. That's gonna stick in people's craw for a bit and produce consequences. As a 50+ person it sticks in my craw.
Even though we've disagreed some when I was a more active poster I've always respected you. Your arguments were mostly well researched and you had something of a unique voice here. I didn't mind too much that your manner had an edge to it.
But the quality of your arguments has diminished and the edge has gotten insulting. I suggest you rethink the path you're on and readjust. And it'd be nice if others would back off a bit and give him a chance to do that if he's willing.

Oceankat, I'd love to talk more about Stilli's blog but don't want to bring it here.
Frankly, I don't mind the "push back" but only that it came unprovoked. Indeed, LisB wasn't even clever enough to reference Stilli's blog if that was the point. It's mostly the hypocritical nature of some of the regulars here.
Religion is a tough subject, but it's possible to discuss it. Unfortunately, you can see that people these days mostly react to me, not my posts. And, like you, I will push back if someone gets on my case.
PS Note Migeulito's post where after I talk about some Pew Research numbers, he decides that he needs to 'understand them better'. That's after quoting any number of polls himself.
If TPM is to function, ideas must be first and foremost ... as always.

Its just a fun silly limerick thread and as CVille pointed out in excruciating detail lisb's limerick wasn't abusive. She even gave a little jab to herself with the playing the clown line. You went ballistic and ended up pushing Quinn over the line. People need to stop overreacting to each other though I'm often guilty of that myself.
I don't know CT, its looking to me like the informative intellectual component of your offerings are decreasing and the attacks are increasing. People attack back and we get the downward spiral.

Look at this thread, I remember your comment well enough to find it with google, because it felt like an attack. I wanted to reply but I just don't feel like I have the time for a substantial discussion at this time. We can't go back and discuss it now but see if you can ask yourself a couple of questions with an open mind.
Does that comment meet the rigorous intellectual standards you would set for yourself?
Does it contain sufficient arguments to support your contentions?
And if not can you see how those you're referring to would see it as an unsubstantiated attack?

You know what? That remark was made to Marquis who was "insulted" that it's finally occurring to him that the boomer generation is moving off the stage.
I would say that remark to any boomer who said something similar.
I'm sorry you felt it applied to you -- HOWEVER after having boomer generalize my generation for years, that is how shrapnel feels.
Again, it was a broad remark, but there are a number of people is does apply to.

-------------------------------------------------
Yeah, ok. Marquis was offended by what he noticed as a "growing tendency to attack members of my generation," not anything having to do with it finally occurring to him the boomer generation is moving off the stage. But since this seems to be an important issue for you I'll be happy to address it.
We aren't going anywhere. Look at your boomer president. No one moved off for him. He had to fight for it to the bitter end. He had to earn it. Obama having won Hillary didn't move off stage. She didn't even move back to her two bit role on stage as jr senator from NY. She moved to a more important position on stage. I've no doubt that you think it should have gone to someone from a younger generation and I hope it sticks in your craw that a boomer got it instead. Get used to that. We aren't going away.
Now given your entirely unwarranted belief in your intellectual superiority to most who post here I considered the possibility that pride might wake you up to the nature of your recent postings. That the lack of intellectual rigor in your comment on marquis' blog might embarrass you enough to open your eyes a bit. I thought it might be a good "teachable moment" for you. Alas to no avail.
So I leave this dialog with a good luck to you and a hope that you are happy with the situation you are creating for yourself.

Uh, no, Miguel.
It was LisB that brought it up. I was responding to that.
But here again, we see that you are very quick to pull the trigger based on my avatar and not on my post.
And as you saw on your thread, I made my point and let you have the last word since there wasn't much that you had to say. Except you needed one more shot at me. Alas!

I had woofers and tweeters put in
The bass booms with the beat
And it vibrates the seat
And I drive down the road with a grin.
A lil bit bawdy like that?

Nice flowerchild.
It got me thinking about the truck I drove when I was young.
The highway was strewn with the parts that it flung.
But the ride lead to adventure
in the search for a wench here
And the rest is best left up to Jung.
