OK, the prayer didn't mention anything about abortion - wow!
But now on CNN they have some dude saying that he shouldn't get an honorary law degree because blah blah blah. Now he is saying that the death penalty is in a different category.
Can you say "hypocrite?"
er, hypocrite?
HAHAHAH
Now the Reverend is saying that reducing Catholicism to abortion is wrong.
These people are talking over the speakers -- I would like to hear the valedictorian rather than the same old talking points I've heard over and over.
The Arroyo guy just called abortion "The Obama Effect."
When Arroyo brought up the Pope, and he was reminded that the Pope has not addressed Obama speaking or getting an honorary degree, the priest reminded him that the Pope just honored the pro-choice President of France Sarkozy.
Does Notre Dame refuse to grant degrees to their pro-choice students?
Should Notre Dame even admit pro-choice students? I mean if it's that important. Should pro-choice students be awarded any degrees?
this whole argument is so.... *sigh*
Do the anti-choice students stand outside of the pro-choice dorms and protest?
Now he's getting the honorary doctorate. I'll be interested to see the response -- WOO WOOO! It is good!
What, no speech? Or is that coming later?
Yes. His speech is separate from the honorary degree. I am so interested in what he is going to say.
I am so interested in what he is going to say.
I am too, Jan. Good job.
Wow! The University President is doing WAAAAAAY good!
He brought up the issue and went on to say that he admires Obama for showing up even when there were many who would keep him away. He is honoring him for being who is is!
This is great! And the crowd is with him. I can't wait to hear Arroyo sputter when it is over!
Yes, that was well-delivered. Ooo...Ooo...OOO...here's Obama!
Why am I worried that some nut is going to shoot him?
Yikes.
He just made a joke: "These honorary degrees are hard to come by. So far I'm only 1 for 2 as President."
Hahahaha!
So far, smooth ooops! Some heckler just started yelling and he is getting shouted down.
Oh, oh, it is getting a little bit ugly, but Barack is keeping his cool.
Obama has such a great sense of humor. I'm seeing lots of smiles in the crowd.
"We must find a way to live together as one human family."
Now he is saying how hard that is to do.
"We too often seek advantage over others."
Now he is talking about things like famine and violence that are current, but would be familiar in ancient times. -- Good point.
He just got applauded for a comment about Stem Cell research! This guy is goooooood!
Now he is talking about abortion, (just after he mentioned that it is important not to demonize someone who doesn't think the same thing you do.)
He is pretty brave, if you ask me.
The room is quiet.
Just wanna smack those sitting behind him who won't applaud him on anything.
Love that he just takes it on full force (abortion, conflict, etc.)
Brilliant--he gets the faculty and parents to give the students a standing ovation for how they have handled the controversy.
Go Obama! Awesome address. I love this guy.
It's over -- he did a great job, and of course now CNN is focusing on the 2 short incidents of heckling. His speech was overwhelmingly well-received.
No one can doubt that.
First honest discussion I've ever heard from a politician about abortion.
The prigs behind him who won't clap or smile are really having a good time! Ha! The joke is on them!
Geez, the bald dude won't even clap for Father Ted.
I suspect the bald dude was Secret Service. he was doing the crowd scan nonstop, and he was right behind Obama.
I hope you are correct (as usual). Thanks for thinking of this ...
So good to 'see' ya here.
I thought Obama was amazing. Terrific speech, delivery and demeanor.
Pat Buchanan probably had to change his Depends 6 times!
Hey, is anyone watching the comments from Arroyo? He actually reminds me of PeeWee Herman -- both his makeup and the way he jerks around when he talks.
OMG - That's who he reminds me of, couldn't quite think of who it was! The guy is obsessed with one issue!
I wonder if most consider the issue of abortion to be a 'religious' issue?
Was that a new cave on the "conscience" thing? Isn't that what allows the zealots to staff pharmacies with folks who won't fill a prescription for morning after pill, contraception or whatever?
I heard that too. He qualified it with 'reasonable,' so I hope it is not a cave. It is a slippery slope.
As a health care provider myself, I don't have a problem with a reasonable conscience clause. By reasonable meaning that as long as there is someone else who is qualified there to provide the service/drug/test, it's fine. But the institution has to make sure that's the case. Some institutions (like hospitals) know which nurses have qualms about certain procedures and don't assign them to those. Reasonable is the key word.
Useful.Thanks.
The stoney faced non applauders put me in mind of the symbolic rejection meted out to NYC Mayor David Dinkins when he required the St. Patricks Day parade to include a contingent of Gay and Lesbian Catholics. As Dinkins himself marched past St Patrick's the notabilities on the steps all pivoted and faced away from the street. Some raising their coat tails.
Since to a person-well,man- they were somewhat better than well upholstered the effect was more to focus attention on their physical attribute which least benefitted from that attention than to win converts to their forces in their theological combat with the city's first black mayor.
If I can put this delicately, the chosen form of protest might have been a degree less chuckle- inducing if it had been leavened with a reasonable proportion of nuns or female laity. (The Dutchesses of Columbus?)
Except that they would have had more sense.
Women, as the face of the Catholic Church? Surely you jest, kind sir! I mean after all, this speech was primarily about women's reproductive rights! Who needs the fairer sex involved in such weighty matters?
Sound reasoning !
Fine speech. Good reception. Good intros.
THOSE KIDS LOVED HIM.
Am I the only one who thinks the media, in their obsession with conflict, have hyped the Notre Dame protests way, way out of proportion? There were 20-30 protesters outside, 11,000 cheering and applauding people inside. Furthermore, according to the media themselves, none of those arrested for protesting had any connection with Notre Dame. So where exactly was the confrontation? Apart from Alan Keyes and Randall Terry, where was the outrage? Were Bush's speeches characterized as "controversial" every time a small group of protesters appeared? I don't think so.

Bio
The first thing I did when I turned 16 was go out and apply for a passport. I've travelled widely, and lived in Europe for a while. I have 3 children; 23 (girl) 19 (boy twins), and after staying home with them for 17 years, I went back to nursing 3 years ago. It was hard to find someone to hire me, but I am in a wonderful office (infertility, ivf, etc) and work with great people.
