If Obama were a Republican, and Republicans were in the majority. . .

I think we'd be hearing from the talking blabberheads on cable TV what an inspired and daring leader he is.  I caught a snippet of MSNBC this morning during which the MSNBC host (not Contessa Brewer, but I'm blanking on her name, nonetheless) was speaking with someone from Politico about the lack of "civility" and "bipartisanship", and the gist went something like this:

"So, do you think Obama has learned anything from his attempts to reach out to Republicans?"

"Well, he went up to the Hill, invited them to the White House, and all he got for it was 3 votes.  I think he's learning that that really doesn't work".

The entire discussion was framed to highlight Obama's supposed failure.  The part that Republicans played in all of this, outside of the 3 votes?  Not discussed at all.

So I got to thinking: if Obama were a Republican, how would the blabberheads on cable and places like The Page, Drudge, and Politico describe what's taken place over the last 50 days?

Instead of "Obama obviously needs to learn a little bit about how Washington works", we'd have:

Obama makes an unprecedented effort to end gridlock and partisanship in DC.  Democrats spurn his outreach; seem willing to continue the failed tactics of the past.

Dems, at their peril, shun the President

Instead of "Obama is obviously distracted", we'd have:

"Obama, demonstrating the intellect and vision that was obvious during the campaign, juggles multiple catastrophes and leads the country in the right direction."

Instead of "Is Obama dragging the stock market down?",

Stock market is gradually shaking off the hangover from the previous administration

How would the polls be described?  Instead of "Obama has same approval rating as Bush at this point in his Presidency" (thanks to Karl Rove for that insight), we might have:

Country strongly supports the President.  Democrats apparently headed towards minority status.

Oh well.

Please feel free to leave your own additions. . .

Adoring crowds greet Obama wherever he goes.

Pundits are thrilled with Obama.

Obama expected to wow world leaders at upcoming summits.

Other planets send trade missions to earth, following world unity, based on Obama's popularity.

Ok... maybe that last one was a bit over the top! :-)

If he were an R and the Rs were in charge we would be hearing the "F" word endlessly... About how the Obama was going to go nuclear if the Democratic party tried to filibuster anything.

Have you heard the word filibuster in the media since the republicans have tried to block everything with it?

It was an endless talking point - from Rove's lips to your ears, passed on through "journamalists" - on almost every channel in the media.

Then it was: Democrats fillibuster. Dems cause gridlock.

Now it is: The Democratic party does not have enough votes. Obama failed to deliver the votes.

The media is a joke. They are the only people that really take themselves seriously anymore.

Thankfully we at least have Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart to shed a little light on these stories. Beyond that it is pretty darn pitiful.

Only Dems filibuster.

Republicans just send hysterical letters to Obama threatening to filibuster his judicial nominees, before he's even nominated them, but that craziness never penetrates the fog surrounding the babblebeans.

Only Dems filibuster.

ConMan, I am a solid heterosexual, but I really do appreciate you. Is it OK if I just copy this and send as an EMail to mornin joke with jughead every morning for a year?

This sort of treatment points out that regardless of how conservative the politician, s/he's a bum in the eyes of the right-wing media unless s/he is a Republican.

user-pic

It also points out how weird the media actually is.

Well, that's obvious, I know, but consider that the majority are probably liberal leaning (if history is any guide) and yet they tend to frame their work in a light that is most positive for Republicans and most unflattering for Democrats.

Either that's a conscious strategy, or there's some world class cognitive dissonance at work here.

That's how abuse victims operate. They attept to placate and accomadate their abuser. Abused kids become bullies at school. Abused animals turn displace their agression toward weaker animals. ACC refs make crazy calls that break for Duke.

It also explains how a lot of Democrats relate to the MSM when you think about it.

As a Ga Tech grad, may I say: LOL!

If I recall correctly, the same studies which found the majority of reporters to lean liberal also found the majority of news publishers and management to lean conservative. It is the management and publishers who decide what is covered and the slant with which it is presented. After all (since media consolidation), these are large corporations we're talking about.

FOX Noise has driven the MSM to the right by vocally challenging the status quo of 30 years ago. It is only now people, a significant number of people because some of us caught the decaption long ago, are beginning to realize maybe they are not "fair and balanced".

If Obama was a Republican, no one would be asking how he plans to pay for his big initiatives like healthcare reform. Orzag is getting raked through the coals by Republicans and Democrats alike. Does no one recall Pharmatopia aka Medicare Part D debate? Geez.

user-pic

But Reagan proved "deficits don't matter"

user-pic

Technically, it's "Deficits don't matter if, and only if, a Republican is in the White House".

This has been another episode of IOKIYAR.

user-pic

Aw, c'mon, Dij. There are no terr'ists, guns or ammunition involved, so of COURSE it has to be explained in great detail.

user-pic

Ohmigod! I just helped, I think, my parents wade through the pharmatopia fog still settled over our seniors. I hope I helped them. I did my best, but JFC, it was a hairball. We, the people, the government, could save a lot of money if Medicare negotiated with the pharmacies.

Hiya Pete! ;)

Fun post!

I have not paid too much attention to Teh Bobbleheads. My fav was when I read somewhere of Tweety going on a rant about our bad economy. Oy. Like where's he been the last 3 years, for real?

And what about Obama funding the VA for more than they asked for and then sending Michelle Obama to visit military families. How the hell can Teh Bobbleheads spin that badly?

user-pic

President Obama stays positive amd focused on his agenda so as not to get sucked into the bobbleheads' distraction game. I look to see Obama score a Slam-Dunk soon.

user-pic

The way I see it, the media will do what it takes to bring Obama's numbers down. You need a credible protaganist and antagonist going at it to keep the media narrative engaging. Republicans are not credible.

I don't know that the is a bias against Obama informing their portrayal of the cuurent political situation. Republicans are busy shooting themselves it the foot; I think the media is trying to help themselves by taking up the slack and playing the part of the opposition. Otherwise Obama runs away with it and the MSM loses viewership.

user-pic

Correction: second paragraph should start with "I don't know that there is a bias ..."

user-pic

Slightly off-topic, but if Obama were a Repugnant, those ubiquitous SodaHead ad banners would have a caption asking, "Are you not so satisfied and relieved that you voted for Obama?" right next to the most presidential-looking image they could find of him.

I, for one, click on their push-polling banner everytime; it's my petty little way of making them literally pay.

user-pic

Hey AdAb!! Nice to see you! ;)

I like your strategy regarding teh SodaHead banners. I might start playing similarly. Heh.

user-pic

STASH!

Glad to see you. . .
