Not Working

The surge is not working.

Guess what the President will do next?

Guess what Democrats will do to stop him?

The surge is not working.

No one believed it would.

Guess what the President will do next?

Whatever he wants.

Guess what Democrats will do to stop him?

Nothing.

Do I win a prize.

Well, I agree with the first and third answers of Valdron but the second one should also be: NOTHING!

Do I win a prize?

Only half correct. The Democrats will do nothing.

By the way, winners receive a highly-sought

"cscs Blogged Here And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt"

t-shirt.

That, or a copy of my new CD, "cscs Sings The Blues," also available at your local music retailer and iTunes.

Either makes a perfect holiday gift, and it's never too early to start thinking about perfect holiday gifts.

Frank Rich on Sunday pretty much had my argument against blaming the Democrats for doing nothing.  It heartened me, as I refuse to think of this as a left-right issue, placing me as an apologist and on the right.

Rich is using the "Sept Deadline Even For Republicans" theory.

I hope he is right, and if it's going to happen, that's probably when.

But, I think Bush and the Generals and the GOP apologists are more likely going to be playing a game of moving the goalposts.

"Rich is using the 'Sept Deadline Even For Republicans' theory." I don't think he's anywhere near that optimistic or nonpartisan. I can't quote him, as I no longer have the article. But seems to me he was just saying something pretty much the opposite:  no deadline while Republicans control the executive and darn near half of Congress as well, and holding the same vote over and over in hope that something will change is magical thinking. As I say, for me it's not about left/principle vs right-center/appeaser. It's about distinguishing radical political action from venting that makes us feel every so much better.

From Sunday:

Withdrawal from Iraq is also on its way. Contrary to Mr. Edwards, only Republicans in Congress can overcome presidential vetoes and in so doing force Mr. Bush’s hand on the war. As the bottom drops out of Iraq and the polls, those G.O.P. votes are starting to line up. The latest example came last Sunday, when the most hawkish of former Rumsfeld worshipers, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, joined his party’s Congressional leaders, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, in talking about drawing down troops if something “extraordinary” doesn’t happen in Iraq by the time Gen. David Petraeus gives his September report on the “surge.” No doubt Mr. Sessions, who is up for re-election in 2008, saw a May 12 survey in The Birmingham News showing that even in his reddest of states, nearly half the voters want America out of Iraq within a year and favor candidates who agree.
