Did Bush/Cheney Order an Assassination of Arafat?

Seymore Hersh has reportedly said that:

"Right now, today, there was a story in the New York Times that if you read it carefully mentioned something known as the Joint Special Operations Command -- JSOC it's called. It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently. They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. They did not report to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff or to Mr. [Robert] Gates, the secretary of defense. They reported directly to him. ...

"Congress has no oversight of it. It's an executive assassination ring essentially, and it's been going on and on and on. Just today in the Times there was a story that its leaders, a three star admiral named [William H.] McRaven, ordered a stop to it because there were so many collateral deaths.

"Under President Bush's authority, they've been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. That's been going on, in the name of all of us.

"It's complicated because the guys doing it are not murderers, and yet they are committing what we would normally call murder. It's a very complicated issue. Because they are young men that went into the Special Forces. The Delta Forces you've heard about. Navy Seal teams. Highly specialized.

"In many cases, they were the best and the brightest. Really, no exaggerations. Really fine guys that went in to do the kind of necessary jobs that they think you need to do to protect America. And then they find themselves torturing people.

"I've had people say to me -- five years ago, I had one say: 'What do you call it when you interrogate somebody and you leave them bleeding and they don't get any medical committee and two days later he dies. Is that murder? What happens if I get before a committee.?'

"But they're not gonna get before a committee."

I've always thought that the Bush administration was behind Yasser Arafat death.  I said it back then and I continue to believe it.  It was just to obvious that after years and years of the man being around, suddenly he gets sick and just up and dies.  What's your opinion?

I'm not saying this man didn't deserve to die, he did terrible things over the years; but we have a law saying no assassinations --- did we do this one?

In 2003, Arafat ceded his post as Prime Minister to Mahmoud Abbas amid pressures by the US. In 2004, President Bush dismissed Arafat as a negotiating partner.

In September 2005, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that French experts could not determine the cause of Arafat's death.

Ashraf al-Kurdi, a personal physician of Arafat for twenty years who had also treated the Hashemite kings of Jordan, later declared that nothing in Arafat's medical report mentioned the existence of any infection.

This blew me away on cable. Just blew me away.
They point out that dicky c was chief of staff for President Ford when Ford signed the executive order, that is still in effect, outlawing assassinations.

Coonsey, Cy is not coming with his book for a year.
But this is going to be the start for congressional hearings and anyone who has died over the last eight years is going to be seen as a possible victim.

Good Post. As always.

How about domestic assassinations? Paul Wellstone, anyone?

Astral when he went down, I mean he was the torch carrier for Humphrey, and Mondale and Gene McCarthy. He was our hero and then that sob got in and still wont go away.

Like I said above, Seymour Hersh will not publish for a year. Every single death is going to spur this kind of conspiracy theory all over the world and those asshats deserve the ignomy of it. but who pays. The New Administration pays.

Prove a negative. you cannot.

I can prove that Bush is NOT the president.

I don't know about how much the new administration pays, perhaps only if they don't investigate and put something forward that shows that for whatever wrongs were committed, someone gets slammed. But all I can do is think of people like Wellstone, or Benazir Bhutto, and wonder what strings Cheney had his hands on.

I don't expect to see any indictments this year and maybe not next year; but I do expect and hope for some to start showing up in 2011. Why not this year or next, you might ask? Because Obama and the Dem's have too many things on their plates right now to try and pass and they might need some of the Republicans to help them (like with the stimulus).

JSOC is nothing new, nor particularly secret. I have no doubt that its functionality and ethic was subverted by the Bush Administration in the same fashion as almost every other government agency in the last eight years.

It will be interesting to see if anything ever comes out about all these high-profile deaths... and why Bin Laden hasn't been killed yet. Or whether he has.

I gotta tell you, your post strikes me as wandering in tin foil hat country.

Arafat was an old man. There is no evidence linking Cheney's group to Arafat, or anyone else. None. This is just conspiracy theory, and no different from the "Vince Foster was murdered" nonsense. There will be plenty to nail Cheney & Co. on without having to just make stuff up.
