Obama: Face the Signing of Bill with Sadness

I have a suggestion for President Barack Obama.  When he appears before the media to sign the Recovery and Reinvestment bill that Congress just past, he should look sad or at the very least frustrated.  He should not 'celebrate' the bill.  He can however, celebrate those that reached an agreement in such a timely manner.

This bill is not what Barack Obama the candidate ran on.  He ran on stopping the war in Iraq, getting the middle class a well deserved tax break, energy independance and health care for all.

He should remind folks that nobody knew that we were headed toward the worst recession since the Great Depression while they were running for the office of the President last year.  He could even point to John McCain's own words about the, "fundamentals of the economy being sound."  We Americans weren't told that something was up till the last couple of months of the election cycle.

The last thing that Barack Obama and the Democrats had planned on writing during their first 25 days in office, was the largest spending/stimulus bill in the history of United States.  Nor had they planned on bailing out banks, insurance and car companies just to keep the economy running.

There were many that said Barack Obama (or any new president) would be tested in their first 100 days, even the Vice President, Joe Biden.  They were right.  This is a test nobody has ever seen.  No one in history has had to face so much in so little time -- two wars, an economic crisis we've never seen before, an energy and environmental crisis and last but not least, health care costs skyrocketing along with medicare and social security problems.

So, I highly recommend that the President face the signing of this bill with sadness and regret.  It's a huge step in a list of steps that must be dealt with in the very near future.  It's not something he wanted to do; but it's his job to keep America safe and secure and that's exactly what he intends on doing.

I would also recommend that he think about asking Americans to all pray with him that it helps curb the pain that's coming.  If he claims it 'will' work, and it doesn't, he will have no where to do but down.

Having a pep talk about the way Americans always pull together in trying times - might also help.

To those of you that think he should be more positive and more confident -- won't work.  During 9/11 President Bush was able to tell American's to, "go shopping".  He knew that not every state was involved in the attack.  The bulk of the nation wasn't personally effected by the attacks (didn't lose their jobs or family or company).  So, by asking them to go out and buy -- he actually helped those that 'were' effected in New York and elsewhere.

In this case, all States are hurting or see their neighbors suffering.  They won't believe words like, "It's ok, go shopping now."

Gift Cards/Coupons For Spending and Bad Debt on Home Mortgages

I recently wrote about an idea of the government giving coupons to all Americans for specific big items like cars, homes, refrigerators, stoves, energy efficient items for your home, etc..

This idea would force the consumer to 'spend' the coupon to profit from it.  This is a better idea than to just hand out cash risking the consumer just 'saving' it.  This idea would also give money to the businesses you buy from (they return coupons to government for repayment) helping them to stay in business during the worst part of this recession.

During that post I had written, somebody suggested using credit cards with an expiration date. This would be a good idea too.  It would put a deadline on how long the money would handed out from tax dollars.

I continue to think this idea would have been good.  I think it could also work for the housing market troubles. It would also be a way to audit what was spent and by whom.

Instead of the government just handing money to banks to pay off bad debt, give the homeowner a coupon or gift card to give to their bank or loan company.  It would pay off a percentage of their bad debt and trigger a new formula to be used by that bank to calculate the new monthly payments for that homemaker.  Each bank that did this would in turn fill out the paperwork showing the new formula, payment and coupon for the homeowner.  They would then send that info back to the government for payment of the bad debt.  This leaves an audit trail.

Of course if the homeowner cannot meet the new payment plan, they would have to turn the home over to the bank.  Yes they would lose their home; but they'd also have no mortgage to pay.  The government paid off the old debt.  The bank could then sell the home at its current value.

Being no expert about mortgages and bad debt - can any of you find a flaw in this logic (other than the fact that Americans have just paid that debt with their tax dollars)?  Wouldn't this process get home values back to what they should be?  And wouldn't that also help other home owners to get back the value of 'their' homes?

Tax Credite instead of Rebate: WHY?

Can somebody tell me why the so-called tax credit we middle/lower class are getting is through the payroll tax instead of getting one lump sum rebate?

I thought the idea of the stimulus was to STIMULATE the economy?  How will giving me $13 a week extra do that?  That won't barely buy on meal.  But having a rebate of 400-500 would allow me to pay off a debt or buy a new stove, washer or refrigerator.  THAT is stimulation.

Illinois Republicans say NO to FutureGen

Illinois Republicans MAY have thought they had a chance to regain the Governorship in the next election because of Gov. Blagojevich's impeachment; but now that they've fought HARD to say NO to the Stimulus bill which means NO to FutureGen ---- they just LOST their chances.

Age a factor in getting medical care - In Stimulus Bill?

So, is it true what Bloomberg's Betsy McCaughey says?  Will age be a factor in whether or not you get medical care?  Is that part of the stimulus package?  Will doctors be forced to do what the Federal government tells them when it comes to medical decisions?

Somebody with expertise please advise us.

Are Republican's Hoping Economy Will Fail?

I sincerely hope more Repub's come over to the final Recovery & Reinvestment bill, at least 10 or so.  It would help convince Americans that it's a bill that just might work or at least help our economy from getting even worse.

Obama needs to get people to feel CONFIDENT about this working, that's probably 40% of the effort to begin with -- getting people confident that everything will be OK and like (I hate using his words) Bush said....go shopping again.

Republicans are trying to use Dem's words during the Bush administration right now by saying that Obama is using the FEAR factor to get people to support this bill (like Bush did with War).  Well, in this case most Americans see somebody losing their jobs so according to the polls it didn't work, at least not as much as they had hoped.

But, if and when the bill ends up passing and if Republicans go on TV saying, "It won't work or this is a sad day for America" (like they did during debate) --- that is when Obama and his supporters need to yell loudly and repeat it several times --- "Republicans seem to be joining Limbaugh in hoping the Obama's plan will fail and there for the economy will fail."

Republicans would rather tell their child, "Odds are son, you won't win this contest, so you might as well not try.", instead of saying, "Son you have just as good a chance as anybody to win this thing, so go for it.".

Gov Crist Realizes His State Must Prosper or He Loses His Job

The White House has just announced that President Obama will be campaigning for the stimulus plan tomorrow in Fort Myers, Florida -- where he'll be introduced by Republican Governor Charlie Crist.

It's odd to think that Crist -- who hit the campaign trail in a big way for John McCain last year, and has been courted to run for the open Senate seat -- has now broken ranks in such a conspicuous manner as to publicly appear with Obama.

It's not just that, but his official statement praises Obama...

Republican Governor Charlie Crist of Florida has already announced his support for President Obama's Recovery and Reinvestment Plan; but having him stand side by side with Obama in Florida should make a huge statement to other republicans.

He may be making sure his State stays afloat so that in 2012 he can run against Obama.  In either case, he knows his state needs help or 'his' current position is likely to be harmed.

Obama Going to the People? Why Are You Shocked?

WASHINGTON - The presidential campaign trail often loved Barack Obama more than he loved it back. When he was sworn in last month, he told friends he was eager to tackle the rigors of the Oval Office without the drudgery of shuttling to a different part of the country every other day.

But a road trip is suddenly looking far more appealing.

In an effort to build support for his signature economic stimulus plan, Mr. Obama is setting off for Indiana on Monday, holding his first prime-time news conference on Monday night and heading to Florida on Tuesday. In both states, he will be working to counter Republican criticism of his $800 billion recovery package and take greater control of the debate.

This column implies that Obama never had any intention of going back out to the 'people' that elected him as President for help.  I feel the need to remind folks that's one of the things Obama promised through out his campaign.

All during his campaign, Barack Obama repeatedly said, "I'm running for President because I believe this election is all about the issues. It's not about me, it's about you. It's about your lives. It's about your future."  He also repeated the following words, "But I need your help to make it happen."  I don't believe he missed saying those words from any of his campaign rallies.

He vowed  at many stops across America, that "We can't just tell people what they want to hear.  We need to tell them what they need to hear. We need to tell them the truth."

So of course, the president will be traveling across the country and doing press conferences through out his time in office.  He wants the American people to know what he is trying to accomplish and what it means for them.

When the media refuses to tell Americans the whole truth, President Barack Obama and his administration will see to it they get all the facts, not just the daily talking points from the opposition.

We're To Trust Senator McCain with our Economy?

JOHN McCAIN

TODAY'S COMMENT:

Appearing on Face The Nation this morning, John McCain affirmed that he will not support the current stimulus package -- and seemed to be saying that the package is even bigger than the New Deal. "I think it's a massive -- it's much larger than any measure that was taken during the Great Depression," said McCain. "I think it has policy changes in it which are fundamentally bad for America."

DURING HIS CAMPAIGN COMMENT:

In Jacksonville, Florida, the Senator declared that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong," despite what he described as "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street."

I'm sorry but if Senator John McCain thinks he's got any 'sound' advice to give Congress on what it does with President Obama's Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, he's got to be crazy.  First he says, the "fundamentals of our economy are strong", then he reverses himself during his campaign claiming that's not what he meant when he said that.  Now, he's trying to tell Congressional members and Obama how best to solve the economy's mess (that is fundamentally strong)?

This is laughable.
