One of the hardest things any elected official faces is the entrenched career bureaucrats, which while extremely important and necessary, also have the desire to survive through the constant rotations of party control over the government. This means they carry their own agendas and can undercut the President at every turn. The Executive can order something, but it is the bureaucracy which carries out these orders, and history is full of examples of the disconnect between planning and implementation of policy. There are few if any entrenched bureaucracies in Washington as powerful as the Pentagon and Defense Department. If Gates is the kind of man that can bring about change whilst being respected, then I vote to keep him in place. Administrators like him are few and far between, and he has not shown himself to be the misplaced ideologue Rumsfeld was.

Just my .02 cents

I grew up in Oklahoma during the S&L scandals and the crash of the oil markets. I saw first hand longtime wealthy families lose their status. But having lived in two of the four aforementioned cities, I can say those experiences were nothing compared to what I have witnessed in Miami or New York. I still remember driving home from work into Miami from the Keys, the first week after having moved. I saw Little Havana truly for the first time. Shanties literally constructed out of corrugated steel lined the roads, yet only a mile away were mansions with Rolls Royces and Ferraris parked upon their gated driveways. The poverty was reminiscent of that which I had witnessed living in Mexico, but to see it juxtaposed with such an appalling display of wealth was unlike anything I had seen.

I think it was then I there I realized something was wrong with the American Dream. I'd been feeling it for quite sometime, but I had been unable to give vision to what was rolling through my head and churning in my heart. I don't pretend to know the answers, perhaps that's why I've returned to school, but I know this: "If peaceful revolution is made impossible, then violent revolution becomes inevitable." What I pray is that we are witnessing is a peaceful revolution in America, so that we may avoid a violent manifestation of the unrest and discontent stirring within us.

One of the best analogies I've ever heard goes like this:

Picture an oxcart wheel. In the center, one finds the divine, eternal power, etc. On the outer rim entirely spread out are the peoples of the world. Each spoke from a culture or religion is the equivalent of that cultures experiences and oral history with the power in the center.

In other words, from the beginning of time man has attempted to explain his experience with the divine. Different peoples from different tribes and regions created their own stories and explanations for these experiences. Thus, we find ourselves with many different religions and sects, yet one can find common threads throughout of peace, love, humility, self knowledge, etc.

Small town USA is worse when it comes to the corruption of local politicians. I grew up in "Smalltown Oklahoma" and have lived in "Smalltown Texas" and "Smalltown Mississippi". In the town I lived in in Mississippi, the county sheriff's brother was the owner of the only pawn shop. Above his pawn shop was one of two bars in the county, also owned by the brother. They allowed drug sales through the bar, took the users goods through the pawn shop, and controlled the dealers behavior through the county prison, all while milking the state for prison dollars. This happens everywhere in America. To attempt to paint Chicago as any worse than politics elsewhere is disingenuous at best.

What really kills me is that the division between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity is solely that of the Messiah. All three believe in God's covenant with Abraham. The division between Judaism and Islam comes from who the rightful heir to that covenant is.

Islam follows the tribal lineage of Ishmael, Abraham's first and according to Judaism, illegitimate, son from his concubine Hagar. Judaism follows the tribal lineage of Isaac, Abraham's second son and first from his wife Sarah.

Judaism teaches the Messiah has yet to come. Islam teaches Mohammad was the Messiah or Great Prophet. Christianity teaches Jesus was the Messiah or Great Prophet.

I agree with TheraP that any claims to ownership over the one true God between these three religions is absurd. However, what strikes me as even more absurd is the bloodshed and hatred based upon a two and half millennia old sibling rivalry.
