Remember that they were OK with the tax rates under Eisenhower. But for their taxers to be used to help any non white is as far as they are concerned a lousy use of the money.

These are folks from small towns that are nearly all white and whose attitude has not changed much in the last 50 years. I know because I grew up in one such town. This push to get rid of SS is but one piece of the puzzle.

We are talking about people who absolutely believe that they have right to be able to refuse business to anyone for any reason, to keep anyone they don not want out of the schools, churches, businesses, hospitals and neighborhoods. That they should be able to smoke, drink, eat and belch anywhere they please. That they should not be required to pay taxes on those things they see as legal or to support programs that do not directly benefit them but do benefit those they do not like or want in their towns, churches, schools, businesses, hospitals or neighborhoods.

And they see it as government interference.

Would this hurt them as well ? Of course. Do they care about whether it will hurt them ? No.
