Courage and John McCain

There are many different types of courage.  John McCain, doubtless showed a goodly amount of physical courage when he was in the Hanoi Hilton - physical courage.  Although, there were many others going through the same horrible experience, many for longer and endured far worse treatment.  but one must keep in mind that he really didn't have any choice, other than to go over in the corner of his cell and die.  Some did that, most somehow survived.  Again, there was little choioce involved.  And I would be one of the first to say McCain showed great physical courage - I certainly would not have wanted to walk in those shoes, and I repsect those who have.   There is another kind of courage - moral courage.  The kind where, when others all around you are pressuring you to do something you think is wrong, when "everyone" else is doing or saying something you don't really believe, when you want to go another way, you do what you think is righ or best.  McCain probably used to have that.  It is clear he doesn't any more.  He wanted someone else for the VP job - pretty badly, and instead gave in to expediency and chose Palin.    John McCain and I graduated from the same school - separted by a few years, but not all that many now.  One of the heroes of that school was Matthew Fontaine Maury who said, simply; " When principle is involved, be deaf to expediency".  I think that is a very good saying for life.   It certainly works for me when I look at Guantanamo, Habeas Corpus, torture, Rendition and other heinous abrogations of our moral and institutional principles.  John McCain had a chance to really stand up for those - and, like his choice of Palin, didn't.  Somewhere along the way John McCain lost his courage - or maybe he really never had that kind of courage.  The courage to make the right decision when you actually have a choice.   Clint Holeman USNA'69

Guess these guys are appeasers too...

Guess these guys - CNAS - are appeasers too...  I don't think so.  these are some very fine minds working very hard to develop strategic concepts for us in a non-partisan way for the most part.  Take a look at who is involved with this group and then try to make the case they are "appeasers".

Looks like only 248 more days of insanity like this!!!

Obama's speech was anything but hysterical - where do these bozos come up with this kaka?

12 - 2 Obama

As this NYT site shows, Obama has had huge victories of similar to WV 12 times - often in bigger states than WV to 2 for HRC [AR and WV].

HRC will try to spin this win as something more than it is, of course, but let's get real here folks.  A couple of weeks ago, one of the pundits said that every time someone wrote about HRC winning they should have to point out how it could be done - for real.

This just sells newspapers and advertising for folks who want to keep it alive.

One really should not read more into it than it is.

Too little, too late.  Ta Ta!

Monty Python

I wish I could take credit for this thought, but I found it on Politico.  It is HRC & Co. to a T.

Monty Python and the Dark Side

Please explain...

I truly don't understand why few, if any, either in the blogosphere or MSM see no parallels between the testimony this week of Petraeus and Crocker and that, admittedly a while ago, of Westmoreland, Abrams, MacNamara, Laird and others.

For me, it is truly dejavu.  The same questions and the same answers.

The reality is when we leave -and we will - there will be some sort of bloodletting.  Hells Bells, its going on now.  Will it get worse - likely.

But part of the problem is us.  And that will change when we leave.  Viet Nam is now a functioning country growing along with the rest of Asia.  Iraq will, in its own way, go a similar, yet different.

An Olympic lesson

I think HRC should look to Michelle Kwan for a lesson on how to lose gracefully and with class.

It was all Michelle's everyone said so, she skated a really good program, perfect even, but then Tara went out and blew everyone away and it wasn't Michelle's gold anymore.

HRC was the "ordained and anointed" candidate - a shoo in , she had a lock on it, it was hers, everyone said so - and then it wasn't.

Not Tanya Harding, Michelle Kwan.  That's who HRC needs to emulate.

Justice Department Rant!

My wife runs an internet based business and was recently the victim of an attempt to defraud her using a bogus cashiers check.  It wasn't of a huge sum money - a bit over $4500.  But after stringing the guy out a bit, it was obvious this is some sort of "boiler room" set up involving many potential people.

When my wife tried to bring this to the attention of the FBI and the banks - no one cared.  The FBI said - go on line an report it [which she has done].  The banks [hers and the one the check was drawn on] don't seem to care at all.  It isn't enough money to interest anyone - except that when it happens to hundreds of people, it is a lot of money for someone.

Perhaps the reason this goes on is that on one really cares about the average person.  The FBI said unless it was a large amount, likely nothing would really be done.

I think I may be in the wrong business...

Something is definitely wrong here.  Very wrong.

Truth or lie

Though no big fan of HRC, I find this not very credible - the kind of stuff the right wing nuts will throw at her if she manages to win [a VERY doubtful outcome], but it is interesting.  Why wait until now?

Trash talkin'

Over at Talk Left, they are really taking Josh, TPM and Obama to task. It is interesting to see how the "other half" lives.

I find the diatribes over there desperate and even slightly pathetic.  I do wonder how those folks are going to react when HRC bows out.  It will make for interesting viewing.

Sticky and Stickin'

Josh has a valid point about the HRC group hanging in there - fighting to the last bullet, "Remember the Alamo" and all.

The issue is that the big, fat cat funders of the campaign aren't really into all the rhetoric and fluff that many of us obsess over.  Most of them are pragmatic money = power folks who aren't going to be impressed with the talk.  It will go a little way towards holding them, but a lot of the big money will simply go away, the phone calls simply will not be returned.  BHO will get the money for the long , likely nasty race against "The Straight BS Express" and all the surrogates.

Another factor, which the money people are considering, and the MSM and blogoshpere aren't focussed on is the huge negative approval of HRC.  It is simply that she is almost unelectable at this point, and the money people, the power people know that.

Cognitive Dissonance isn't just a conservative trait

I read with absolute fascination DS piece about how that Obama should "take one for the team".

This is reminiscent of W's comments about the Iraq war and other arenas where there is virtually complete disassociation from reality.  it is tough, really tough sometimes, to admit that it just didn't work this time, even when "this time" is likely the last time.

I agree with Josh and others, simply telling her that it isn't working is about as useful as telling w he has made a terrible mistake - it bounces like a canon ball off Old Iron Sides.  It is time to stop fighting - perhaps that is one of the problems - she's a gun fighter, and the time for gun fighting has past.  And like the gun fighters of old, she doesn't know her time is up.
