Note to Josh

While I understand that advertising raises funds, it's possible to determine the types of ads on your site.

With that in mind, can you please get rid of the roll-over banner ads.  They are very intrusive to my TPM experience as they really interfere with my navigation of the menu at the top of the page!  They literally cover up tabs and buttons on a consistent basis if I bump my mouse.

Rec! I hate those ads. They are not just "intrusive," they are disruptive.

Me too! as they say.

Oh well ... No problemos here . . .

Firefox and NoScript extension for Firefox . . .

TPM has every right to run whatever ads it deems it wishes to run.

Likewise. I have every right to block whatever ads TPM wishes to run.

On their end it's their portal but on my end it's my private space.

Ads ... Zapped!

Here's the deal: it's 2009. I don't have to do all that for any other website I visit. I'm perfectly aware of all the ad blockers (I've been using Firefox since it was in original beta) but there are sites where they interfere with other rich content that I do need.

Now, it's true, I don't have to visit TPM (hold the cheers, please). But the real issue is that the types of ads are controllable. Blocking all ads with software hurts Josh as some ads do register that they pop up. I have no problem supporting TPM via putting up with fixed area ads (though they do slow down loading times especially on smart phones), but the ads I'm talking about change the screen dramatically -- and in the specific area of all the menus and tabs.

So, I'm trying to allow Josh his advertising, but make it more pleasant for patrons of his site. Most professional websites these days will avoid the use pop-under, roll-over, sound, etc. ads. I was merely pointing out a suggestion.

clear,

I know what you mean by slowing down loading times, I have a terrible time loading pages on TPM and Salon.com

Seconded, anyone complaining about the adverts needs to either look into technical solutions to avoid being subjected to them or just can it.

And getting all whiney about the "types" of ads that TPM media runs is just juvenile. Grow up - don't visit the site if the adverts (which you don't even have to see) are going to give you hemorrhoids.

user-pic

Did you know . . .

It's tough, but not totally impossible giving a hemorrhoid hemorrhoids.

Paddlin' back into the tall reeds of the pond . . .

I just hate that Lance Armstrong's Live Strong seems to be the most prominent ad, and I'm sure some of his profits are going to the Republican party, who would work against the issues TPM cares about.

I wish he had more Viagra ads.

user-pic

Cialis. I want more bathtubs.
