On another note, last night when the race was called for Obama, people were leaving their houses, stepping on to balconies and honking their cars in my neighborhood, which is a predominately African American neighborhood just south of where Obama lives in Chicago. They were yelling and hollering "Obama, Obama", one of the participants yelled out "We have a black president!" It was absolutely unexpected and fantastic!

In response to reader SC's email about feeling anger last night, I completely identify with that emotion. Last night I had tears running down my face, not only because of the enormity of the what was happening but I think more than anything I was letting go of all the anger and frustration of the last 8 years. It was like an enormous weight was lifted, the last 8 years have been the longest 8 years, it couldn't come fast enough for me. From the moment Bush was called President, i have been counting the days that he had left in office. I have been wanting this nightmare to be over for 8 years! And it is finally here.

I want to send out a sincere thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to get President-elect Obama elected. I know that you worked on behalf of all of us who believed that this man was something special, that he was speaking to the hope and optimism that rests in the deep recesses of our subconsciousness and just needed to be awaken. Thank you.

Speaking of positive energy, I live in Chicago and have to drive by Grant Park everyday on my way to work and have been witness to the rally set up and let me tell you it has been exciting to watch. There are about a dozen or so news vans that have been lined up on Columbus drive with the satellite dishes and reporters are now constantly reporting from that area. They have the lights set up high above the park so at night it lights up the entire field, not a small field either. There's this energy and excitement in the air in Chicago...it's so close to becoming a reality! Now if we can only get the Olympics, I imagine it will just as crazy is this rally will be.

While I understand the premise of changing the name of redistribution of wealth, I don't think that simply calling it another name will change the minds of people who do not believe in the fundamental argument of social and economic justice. If they have the "every man for himself" attitude, i can't see them changing their tune simply by calling it something else. It is difficult to reach those people because their attitude already implies that they don't have the open mindedness to believe in social justice.
