Regarding: Nancy Pelosi

By now, you've seen the statement by Speaker Pelosi regarding the briefings. In it, she leads by referencing her Human Rights work.

Here is what I've told AI and HRW:

Greetings...

During her statement on May 14, 2009, Nancy Pelosi referenced her work on Human Rights and as an opponent of torture.

Her website has this brief blurb:

"Pelosi has long been an advocate for human rights around the world. She has fought to improve China's human rights record, attempting to tie trade to increased human rights standards. She has also been a leader on efforts to free the people of Tibet."

In short, if Nancy Pelosi is a worker on behalf of Human Rights then your organization owes it not just to Speaker Pelosi but to all victims of torture to speak up, loudly and as often as necessary, on her behalf; which, I must remind you, is to speak on behalf of torture victims. If Speaker Pelosi has been their advocate in America, your organization must be her advocate now.

This is something your organization must do if Speaker Pelosi's record is that of a worker for Human Rights.

Nancy Pelosi is slowly sinking and her desperate attempts to clutch at AI and HRI simply cannot disguise the truth.

She said several times yesterday that winning power in Congress was more important for her than ending or at least protesting torture.

Nancy Pelosi is not "clutching" at AI and...HRI?!?

I notice that you attribute statements to Pelosi, but you do not quote her.

Perhaps you can indicate where, in her prepared remarks or in her answers, your imputation occurs.

"My job was to change the majority in Congress and to change — to fight to have a new president, because what was happening was not consistent with our values, certainly not true, and — and something that had to be changed…"

Her job was to raise hell there and then, while she was a ranking member of the committee resposible for oversight of CIA.

Her job was to raise hell when she was doing something else later and was told that waterboarding was used.

She decided to allow this to continue until she managed to "win the Congress".

Perhaps because it was a more "appropriate" procedure.

Nancy Pelosi can be quoted; and you did quote her.

However, the quote you offer is not equivalent to your re-wording of her statement, which re-wording (or interpretation) is in your original reply to my post.

I'll spell it out.

Nancy Pelosi did not say, as you alleged: "...winning power in Congress was more important... than ending or protesting torture."

In fact, your entire sentence structure containing your imputation betrays you on this; and that is why the ellipses exist above.

Nancy Pelosi DID say: "My job was to change the majority in Congress and to change — to fight to have a new president, because what was happening was not consistent with our values, certainly not true, and — and something that had to be changed…"

Assuming your source is accurately transcribing.

Really? Let's have a discussion of what the definition of "is" is.

It is unlikely I will be able to help you.

Thanks for clearing this up. I don't think I'm the one who needs help.

You're welcome. HAND.
