The recent CBS/Times poll has some interesting internals. The least reported/commented on are women voters, and it got me thinking. Obama has a 16 point lead with women voters. Wow! My internal response to this was a response to Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles: Here are the White Women. I was wrong. Obama only has a two point lead among white women according to that poll. What that means is that minorities, ALL minorties, make up that difference.

It got me to thinking (something I'm prone to do), that we keep hearing over and over about the young vote and how Obama has energized them. Very true, I work on a college campus and this is definitely the case. But the one overlooked factor, I think implicitly suggested in these polls, is the minority vote.

I think all minorities in America, not just African American, but Asian, Disability, European, GBLT, Hispanic, American Indian, etc. voters will vote in overwhelming numbers for Obama. And as the above poll numbers with women suggest, it is a very influential demographic.

Second. The I-35 bridge in Minneapolis was completed this week: THREE WEEKS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE AND UNDER BUDGET. I cannont stress how wonderful this news is. Simply put, it is a clear example of all that America has been and all that it still is. In an age of corruption and graft and cronyism, there are still some segments of our society that cling firmly to the American ideal.

I can remember when I was somewhere between 10-12 yrs. old (this was in the mid-80's) and my parents took thier children on a trip to the West (I lived in MI). One of the stops we took was at the Hoover Dam. I remember the tour guide stating that it was built on schedule and under budget. I remember thinking at that young age that this could never happen in America today. It boggled my mind that someone wouldn't abuse the government trust and steal money. It happened again this year and it boggled my mind. All of those workers who worked 24/7 on that bridge made me proud to be an American. Hopefully they make you proud too.

      ....Unto her sweet, Goodnight.

There has been much brought up over Gov. Sarah Palin's family life. Particularly, her son Trig(?) and daughter Bristol's pregnancy. Who Cares? In my mind (and not yours, but mine only), I think what person (not woman, not man, but person) would subject thier family to this kind of scrutany? Ever?

The problems that this family will have to deal with is one in which so many of us know so intimately. It is hard to raise a child. It is hard to make them aware of the world around them, when at the same time, they are in thier late teens and awakening to the world. Think back to when you were 16-25: you were indestructable (I was, too!).

This family now has three children to raise. Questions have been raised about Trig and who would be there to change his diaper (forgetting that a Father can change a diaper just as good as a mother (and take a stream of piss to the face a bit more non-chalant than a mother)), which find me appalled: Who cares about diaper changing in the White House?

But I digress, this family has, literally, three children to raise. This family has a task before them that needs America to support it. This family, needs a FAMILY.

So let's let Sarah talk about the US Economy, let's let her talk about Foriegn Policy, let's even let her talk about social issues for the next two months. And when she's done, let's agree to one other thing.

Let's all agree to send her home, so she can fully attend to her family's needs. On Nov. 4th, let's send her home so she, and her husband, attend to the single most important need of thier lives, thier children.

Because, at the end of the day, she doesn't understand foriegn policy and she doesn't understand the economy.

It may be that the only thing she understands is her family. So let's give her the only chance she has in helping her family by sending her back to Alaska.

But let's not focus on this anymore. Let's focus on the fact that she is no more ready to lead the country than I am. I am confident that I would debate her to a standstill, and Biden would make mince-meat out of me.

Let her voice ring out on a National stage, and then we can send her home to attend to her family.

Has anybody noticed the ads that appear between the end of a blog and the comments section that feature Akmadinij...(Iranian figurehead, I can't spell it) and Obama in a split panel picture? I largely ignored it, but I happened to notice that it says at the bottom "Paid For by John McCain, 2008". THAT, piqued my interest.

So I read the ad. It says 'Is it OK to met unconditionally with anti-american forgien leaders?' So I figured it might be some poll, but it doesn't matter whether you click 'Yes' or 'No', it opens a page for you to donate to McCain's campaign. Try it, you'll like it.

Now, I'm all for the open market, and I'm more than willing to discuss politics with people who don't share my views. But this is just a waste of money for McCain (a good thing). How many people here would give money to the McCain campaign? Five? Ten? It's obvious that he's trying to court the women who would vote McCain over Obama. This is offensive.

The mere tactic is misleading because it's not a poll, it's McCain trying to split the D-Party. It's particularly offensive after some of the recent posts (particularly LisB's wonderful insight into the complex issue of women's rights) given here.

I won't stand for it. It time to hit back. We need to show this mysoginist what the internet can do. Here's where I'm at a loss.

We need to show McCain's people that we are united against him. Democrats, Independs, and Republicans. I would love to hear from you how we can hit him and hit him hard. This is not philosophy any longer. I'm talking about action. If you are not willing to act on your suggestion you need not respond. The enemy thought he could infiltrate our camp using typical, misleading Bush strategies. I, for one, won't stand for it.

I want us to discuss options that we can use, as a whole, over the internet. Then I want us to take action, and if have to attach my real name to it I will, enthusiastically.

I'm serious. I watched Obama's speech to his campaign staff, and he's right, "If we screw this up, noone will get help for the next four years" (paraphrased, but not the if we screw this up part).

McCain is officially a corporate troll, but this time we know excatly who to hit. Let's do something. Let's unite. Let's not screw this one up this time. Let's discuss, and then act. We need to send a message: Don't come to our home turf and expect us to capitulate. (I'm going to try to cross post this at DKos and MyDD, I've never done it before so if I'm not successful, I hope someone here will. Also, I give anyone permission to post this somewhere else. Even at little green footballs or whereever. I'm not afraid of who I am, and I'm not afraid to stand up for Americans needing help. The only caveat is that you MUST post the entire blog.)

I want to say that I've been an Obama supporter throughout this primary season. I was blown away by Hillary's speech today. It was everything it had to be. I think, like a lot of Obama supporters, I was skeptical about what she would say today. As an Obama supporter, and I don't mean this in a bad way, if she had given a speech like the one she gave today in Feburary, she would hands-down be the presumptive nominee. I applaud her. And the fact that she could go out and give the speech she did today, despite what has to be such a personally hard moment in her life, has really, really raised my opinion of her.

However, as an Obama supporter, I want to see her follow through on what she said today. I thought I had a great idea, now I'm not so sure of it. I am, however, still interested in what the people in the blog-o-sphere think of it. If I were writting a thesis I would have titled it: 'How to bury the Republicans'. Here it is:

Although they are considered junior Senators, both candidates carry exceptional weight in the party now, and they both currently have jobs as Senators. My idea was this: that they should both co-introduce a bill to Congress that would significantly advance women's rights. What that would be, I have no idea, and I would love to hear your comments on this. BUT, they could use their new power to ramrod the issue through Congress and get every real Democrat in Congress to support it in both the House and the Senate (And give a real reason to alienate Leiberman in the process). But the key is to make it something substantive, not some window dressing that could easily be discounted as political theater. I'll detail the strategy later, but what got me thinking this wasn't such a great idea is that the Republicans would spin it as a wedge issue. I'm sure it would be hugely popular with the Democratic voters, but we've just moved into a phase where we have to start thinking about wooing Independants (like myself) and Republicans.

So what is the issue that should be forced in Congress? Upon my rethinking, the War in Iraq. Congress had the power to grant war-time power to the President, it should have the power to take it away. It doesn't always make the front headlines nowadays, but it is an issue that is on every voter's mind. They should draft some legislation that would declare the war over and demand troop withdrawl in 90 days.

Why? The President would veto it, I know, and it wouldn't get a veto-proof majority in either house. BUT, the Democrats could point to the fact that they could pull in every Democratic vote in Congress (this is key to whatever issue the co-bill addresses). Most importantly, John McCain wouldn't vote for it, thereby permanently fixing the albatross to his lapel. That is the point. By picking an issue that the broad general public cares deeply about, the Democratic Party could attach a 'Just Kick Me' sticker to McCain's back.

And yes, this proposal could pick up Republican support as well. Off of the top of my head I can think of three Republican Senators that would support this: Hagel, Luger, Warner. None of them are up for re-election this year.

In my eyes, this is a win/win situation (not just on this issue, but on the women's rights issue as well, or any other big issue). If we get enough Republican votes, the Democrats can point to the fact that they can reach across the aisle and demonstrate that they can work with their colleagues. If they don't they can point to the fact that they were thwarted by Republicans, they will have an avenue to currently, and directly, tie John McCain to Bush and it will diffuse the new McCain add. "If you hate war, why are you supporting it Senator McCain?" "If you're not like the President, why are you voting with him Senator McCain?"

In my mind this is a win/win. If it passes the Congress, even though it will ultimately fail with a Bush veto, McCain will vote with Bush, thereby tying the two together. If it gets a veto-proof majority, even with McCain voting against it (which we know won't happen because he hates war so much...Snark!), the Democrats can point, not to a vote that happened years ago, but to a vote that happen a couple of months ago.

My point is this, they should force something through Congress as quickly as possible. But it has to be something substative, not some powder-puff political tripe. But something that will resonate with the American people.

Then the people can look back and say: And who made this happen? Obama/Clinton.

Normally, I would balk at this type of sycophancy. But it really isn't sycophancy if 80+% of the American people agree with it. It's called listening, and changing. Isn't that what our elected officials are supposed to do? Isn't that what this election is supposed to be about?

Unity and then some.

I look forward to your comments

Before any of us go any further, I want to lay down ground rules about this post. You are not allowed to say anything bad about my father. I am about to tell you his unauthorized biography, and if anybody says anything negative about him I will take your hide. That being said, I'm posting this in response to people who want to get inside the mind of a Clinton voter.

To me, my father has been an inspiration to me in so many aspects of my life with the sole exception for which I am about to write. As the product of a child of divorce, I grew up not getting to know my father the way I wanted to. It hasn't turned out bad, and I have gotten to know my father the way I wanted to many, many years ago. That's not to say that I didn't see what I'm about to write about coming, it was just...disappointing.

My father lives in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. He's spent most of his life there, although that's not where he grew up. He grew up on the south side of Chicago. But, after so many years, he's now a Cubs fan. He is extremely liberal. He's always voted Democratic. I can remember phone conversations with him where both of us hoped that the latest piece of news would lead to a Bush impeachment. It never did, but we had fun fantasizing about it. I was convinced of my father's democratic ideas and wanting something new to develop in this country. This is where I was disappointed, but not surprised.

I called my father after the Illinois primary to see if he voted. He had, and he voted for Clinton. I was surprised because of this, as we shared so many principles that I thought that it would be a no-brainer for my father to vote for Obama. It turns out it wasn't. He told me he wasn't ready to vote for a black man. Yeah, I know...Ouch!

Let me give you my father's perspective.

His parents were German immigrants. They arrived in the late 30's-early 40's. They met here in America. My grandfather fought in WWI (on the German side). He was told by the German government in the lead-up to WWII: Either fight for us, or leave. He left and came to America, and I couldn't be happier. Nobody in my family knows much about how my grandmother ended up in America, but she found her way here.

My grandfather was a barber and ended up being able to support a family with three kids on that. Odd, I know, in this day and age.

My grandparents ended up getting married and moving to the Cottage Grove neighborhood on the South Side. For those of you interested, it's approximately 111th and Cottage Grove (a street). Unwittingly, I ended up taking a job only a few blocks away from where my father grew up.

My gradparents moved there at the begining of White Flight. After ten years it was an entirely black neighborhood. For whatever reason, my grandparents stayed in the neighborhood. This was in the 50's, the begining of the Civil Rights movement. Because they were White, they were treated poorly by the new population.

Here comes the sad part.

Because they were one of the few white people in the neighborhood, they were terorized by a few thugs in the community that decided any white person was open to attack.

My grandmother bore the brunt of the attacks. It started with her not being able to carry her groceries home because someone would knock them out of her hand. It escalated with her being spit on. It ended with her being beaten.

Who is to blame? Who knows. My grandmother was the perfect stereotypical German woman: Big boned and didn't take shit from nobody. Who knows what she might have said to provoke the attacks. But I can say this, anything she might have said was done out of fear and a complete misunderstanding of America at the time. She thought that America was the land of opportunity. I guess she learned the hard way.

The point to all of this is that my father, as a young child, saw all of this. He saw how black people beat his mother. A woman from another country, who had no stake in the political processes that were unfolding around her.

She had her groceries tossed accross the street, she was spit on, she was beat upon. All because she was in the wrong place in the wrong time.

My father saw all of this happen, as a young man, to his mother and father.

This is not to say that I validate any form of racism. This is not to say that I sympithize with the color of one's skin. This was my father's experience, and he has carried it with him his entire life. I can't say that I blame him. I can't say that I blame anyone, regardless of skin color, to carry this with them for the rest of their lives. This is America. Just as it was 60 years ago, it is today. I don't agree with it, but it is a reality regardless of your skin color.

I just want to say that I know, for a fact, that people of color in this country today...TODAY...go through this kind of shit every day of thier lives.

I had a fantasitc teacher in high-school that once said: "If you're white, male, over 21, you can do anything you want in this country". That statement alone, in 1990, made me realize how far we have to go.

I desperatly want to chage that oh, so accurate narritive from my high-school teacher. This is my hand extended, and if you take it, we can help each other.

By the way, I talked to my Dad yesterday and I asked him about the RBC meeting. He said: "What meeting, I was out in the garden all day?" I later asked him about Obama in Nov. and he said: "He's looking like a damn good candidate isn't he?"

Hope. That's all I'll ask of this country. Hope for America to be something truely better.

Most of them didn't vote, and two who would've voted for Obama, voted for Clinton because they wanted to vote (and, yes, they knew that if they wrote in a name it would be discarded).

Here's how you rig an election. Not behind the scence where the international monitors can cry foul. But in public, and you can cry "Democracy for all".

This whole spectacle today really makes me wonder. A spade is a spade, whether you call it Democrat or Republican, they really follow the same rules, just in different fashion. It really demonstrates why Democrats loose to Republicans. Tell your constituents one thing and do another.

Oh, the Democrats are fools. And I will continue to support them. It's better to support a fool with ideas than a dictator.

Peeps: Help me out on this.

Peace, Love, Dove.

Chauncey Baker

I am now officially an Obama supporter. I voted early for him yesterday (So did the woman next to me who let that admission slip in a conversation with her friend. Older, white woman by the way).

Anyway, I'm in the college town of Lafayette, and as you can expect there is a lot of support for Obama on campus. I'm a professor at Purdue University (Chemistry, just so you know I'm not trying to be some policy wonk, just what I see), and while I try very hard not to influence my students with my personal politics, it's also very hard to ignore the student organization for Obama. This is a fairly conservative campus, but the organization for Obama is fierce. I haven't personally seen a single flyer, rally, meeting call for Clinton on campus (or McCain for that matter, but that could be justified in that he is garunteed the nomination). Many for Obama. I will let you interpret that as you will.

The television ads in this market are just starting to go 2:1 for Obama. Clinton was following most Obama ads (leading a few) early in the week. Friday and Saturday I personally haven't seen any. Please take this with a grain of salt, I'm only trying to report 'what I've seen' as a viewer in IN.

Instead, something more intersting has been cropping up. Almost half of Obama ads that I've seen have been followed imediately by American Leadership Project Ads. Most of the early (Thursday and Friday) Obama ads have been hitting Clinton on the gas-tax-holiday. About half of these have been immediately followed by the American Leadership Project sponsered ads that say that Obama doesn't offer specifics, and they give a number to call to 'force' Obama to give specifics on his policy issues. The intersting thing is that they give a Washington DC number (202 area code) to call rather than the free number from his campaign web site. I'll call the number at some point when I can catch the ad (if even can anymore) and see where it leads.

Furthermore, you can see Obama ads pretty much everywhere. Network channels and cable channels (much of my viewing is on cable channels, take that for what you will)

Now, the above was Thursday/Friday. Today, things have begun to shift a bit. The ads are closer (I believe snipits of) to the 'closer ads' Obama has for IN and NC. So not any immediate ALP follow-ups. But he has a great line in those ads: "Politics didn't lead me to working people, working people lead me to politics". That's a great line and it's going to resonant here in IN.

Obama had a big speech today in Indianapolis. I've read the text, it's a humdinger and getting almost no coverage nationally, or locally (I'm not in the Indy market). You can read the full speech here:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/amandascott/gGCSJF

It's clear from the Jefferson-Davis speech of last night and the speech in Indy he's going back to the inspirational tone, but with more policy/personal details. I think this spells trouble for Clinton.

Finally, don't forget that Indiana is an open primary where Democrats, Rebulicans, and Independents can vote for whomever they want. This is going to favor Obama despite 'Operation Chaos'

As far as the 'Magnequench Plant' goes: Haven't seen anything yet from the local news (help here if I'm wrong). I refuse to buy the local paper, not because they're crap, but because we have our own 'Scaife' here in IN and he owns not just the newspapers, but TV channels as well. I won't go into that now.

In summary, I feel really good. I think the polls are crap and I think it's because they undersample Republicans and Independents (like myself). From where I sit there is a really good vibe for Obama in this state, and I personally think it will be His New Hampshire.

Thanks All.
cb
