WaPo Endorses Obama for Pres
Despite having less than favorable coverage of Obama since the primaries, WaPo has finally thrown in the towel and backs Obama for President. While there are a couple of points that many of us would quibble with, overall their observations of Obama's suitability for the Office of President would earn a round of applause and hearty Huzzah from this audience.

Here's one of my favorite passages:
Mr. Obama is a man of supple intelligence, with a nuanced grasp of complex issues and evident skill at conciliation and consensus-building. At home, we believe, he would respond to the economic crisis with a healthy respect for markets tempered by justified dismay over rising inequality and an understanding of the need for focused regulation. Abroad, the best evidence suggests that he would seek to maintain U.S. leadership and engagement, continue the fight against terrorists, and wage vigorous diplomacy on behalf of U.S. values and interests. Mr. Obama has the potential to become a great president. Given the enormous problems he would confront from his first day in office, and the damage wrought over the past eight years, we would settle for very good.
Throughout the craziness of the Primaries and McCain's approach of one stunt after another, Obama presents us with intellect and rationality - in a word, Leadership.
And the sum it all up with this lovely description:
But Mr. Obama's temperament is unlike anything we've seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment.
Yeah. That's our man. I am realizing that this is the first time since I became eligible to vote that I felt so thoroughly proud of my selection of the individual to lead this Country. I understand that Obama will inevitably disillusion and fail to fulfill the ideals that many of us hold for him, but isn't it nice to believe in the good that our government can achieve again?

Their coverage of McCain hasn't been favorable either. I'd say they have been pro-Obama this year.

Depends on the journalist. And what the other papers and news outlets are covering. I find that WaPo tends to follow the herd.

I am in shock. I never dreamed they would endorse Obama this early. Their ombudsman, Deborah Howell, seems very lightweight to me. And they have no control whatsoever over the "comments" on their site, allowing very racist, hate filled, and manic diatribes to proliferate.
Now - does anyone think some of the more dignified Republican Senators may endorse Obama also - I'm thinking John Warner and Dick Lugar.
There are rumors on Huffington that Powell is ready to endorse Obama. He needs to do something to redeem himself.

I'm not sure how much the WaPo endorsement will matter in Northeast Ohio and such places, but it makes me feel better. Will the MSM cover this at all?

Lots of rumblings that Powell is about to endorse, so I think that's probably true. Do you think any of the Republican Senators would actually endorse Obama? Is there a precedent? Imagine the repercussions.
I know what you mean about the WaPo comments sections. I jump right in there and it's just craziness.

I keep wondering about Hagel. His wife has. And Obama mentioned him last night. But who knows? Sane repubs should jump ship.

Thanks for putting this up, Carol.
the right man for this perilous moment.
They got that right. And it's a pretty good endorsement, though if it had been me, I would hav been far more laudatory.
But I take comfort in small favors.

It's exciting, isn't it? Let's hope this is a start of a flood of endorsements.

The closest the Post came to endorsing a Republican in a recent presidential election was 1988 when they declined to endorse as between Bush 41 and Dukakis.
I'm curious if denizens have any solid information on the process the Post uses to make endorsement decisions? Same with the NYT--tho there is no doubt who they will endorse this time.
