I think Barney Frank was being quite rude. I've known a number of very reasonable and well spoken dining room tables, as well as very well-informed home furnishings of various political stripes. I think Rep. Frank is letting his experience with a few, less open-minded dining room tables color his whole perception of all dining room tables as a whole. I'd expect better from a liberal, especially one who has had to face the challenges Rep. Frank has had to face.

That being said, his line "It is a tribute to the First Amendment that this sort of vile, contemptible nonsense is so freely propagated," was as awesome as it gets.

Yeah, I wondered about this 10 years thing too. Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff until 1993 and was made Secretary of State in January, 2001, so this rule doesn't seem to have applied (and he was National Security Advisor before that (in fact, he was promoted to General while serving as NSA, or immediately thereafter).

Additionally, Clark has run for President, it seems odd that he'd be allowed to run for President before he'd be allowed to hold a cabinet post. I wonder if this is just a convention or if it's a serious rule. If it's a convention, then he retired in 2000, which means he'd have been out of the military for 8-9 years rather than 10 years, which is close enough as far as I'm concerned. I'd love to see some documentation on this particular rule.

You know, after Obama's "A More Perfect Union" speech, I kept hearing conservatives feigning outrage over him supposedly "throwing his grandmother under a bus."

I have to say, of all the BS that's been spewed, that angered me the most. Anyone who read "Dreams From My Father" knows exactly how much Obama loves and reveres his grandmother. He didn't throw her under a bus, he held her up as an example of how fine, decent people are fallible, and how love can be a bridge over fear.

Mrs. Dunham, in your daughter and grandson, you raised a pair of fine Americans. The love you showed your family is a few hours away from changing the course of an entire nation's history for the better. Thank you.

These are great! I love the first-person captioning as well, it's interesting how much this photographer seems to have been able to show us his human side when most campaign reporters I've read remark about how "remote" he seems. I think that's because reporters are trying to interact, while photographers try to observe.

I love the photo of his shoes. From here on out, I resolve to never ever poke fun at a candidate's choice of footwear, not matter how outrageously expensive it may be. Clearly a pair of sturdy, comfortable shoes are as important as a firm handshake when you're running for President.
