Dan Froomkin is beside himself...sounds like he wants Bush back

This article by Dan Froomkin is well worth reading. His criticism of President Obama's speech is quite severe. As one of the most vociferous critics of my administration, he actually compares Obama unfavorably with the Bush Administration:

"...his disquisition on weaning the nation from fossil fuels still wasn't even as strong as George W. Bush's patently insincere but rhetorically effective assertion that "America is addicted to oil."  [please note that I was sincere, just not in too big a rush.  I have friends that work in oil]

and, "One of the countless lessons of the Bush era is that the American people, for better or for worse, respond very positively to a leader who acts with conviction."

Froomkin makes the argument that the President is getting ripped a new one by the Republicans no matter what he does. He asserts that the knowledge of that response should be liberating to Obama. Froomkin then poses the million dollar question, "If you're going to get savaged by your opponents, no matter what, why talk in half-measures and generalities that make even your supporters cringe?"

Look, I may disagree on many issues of policy with Obama. Heck, when I first met him I thought he was a black Irishman cause his name was O'bama. But I am so fascinated that a man who seemed so incredibly capable of managing a campaign is so tone deaf to his supporters. Rove said it best, "play to the base."

Obama won't pacify the Republicans. What is he doing? Maybe Cheney has the goods on him...

Obama is (in)famously pragmatic, seeming to pride himself on his non-ideological nature, well, except, for when it comes to an idealism about being non-ideological.

Obama seems to truly believe that logic and reason can still be used to persuade Republicans. That 'belief' is the one form of idealism that's clearly apparent in a man who otherwise is highly pragmatic. That belief, and the conceit that he can still 'get through' to the right has, and is, hampering Obama's policy negotiating performance with congress.

BTW: I believe that Obama too often listens to the 'voices of reason' of those around him. Reason, at least, as it is presented to him by his close advisers. I feel that Obama's practical and logical decision making style is a very valuable personal asset of his. The problem with it, however, is that the results of logical decision making depend very greatly on the accuracy, completeness, and relevance of the information utilized. It's in the presence of inaccurate information that reference to some set of key principles, call it idealism, can help guide good decision making.

At least "listening to reason" was never a handicap of mine.

I was born at a young age in the north but I got to TX just as fast as I could. My career has gone downhill. In recent years, I was President and before that I ran the greatest state in the world--TEXAS! and before that I ran the rangers starring NOLAN RYAN! Yeeehaww! were those great times!
