"I Like to Know What I'm Talking About Before I Speak"
Ed Henry will think twice before his next smart-a follow-up question to the President. In substance, the President told Henry not to pigeon-hole him or play silly games and compare him to someone else. The President made it clear to Henry that he sets his own "presidential" standard. Ed will need micro-surgery to remove Obama's stinger from his rear end.
Isn't it refreshing to have a President who is quick on their feet? Old Ed should have checked the President's resume more closely, especially the part that reads editor of the Harvard Law Review. That achievement alone implies that the President is use to participating in a good debate. So Republicans and unsuspecting reporters take note. If you plan to one up the President, you had better bring your "A" game or make sure that you are wearing your chastity belt!

If the President was posting that exchange here at TPM, Arthur would have given him the Dayly award for that comeback...All I could do was cheer and yell "what a burn!" Loved it!

The President didn't want Robert Gibbs to have all the fun.

Great comeback, and thanks for bringing it to the forefront. I foresee it as being rather symbolic of the way in which he approaches the presidency.
I also had a strong, verbal reaction to the statmement, though sadly, my television didn't reply...
Ed Henry had his pork butt handed to him with a honey glaze and pineapple garnish. I'll sleep well tonight...

Of course now the bozos of the press are saying 'Obama lied, he already had the facts.'
Only wish we did. Still never revealed the processes that allowed that clause to be inserted.
CNN is posturing that Ed's was the best question and that Obama was angry, yadda yadda yadda.
And I thought Rahm was great on Larry King.

CNN with regularity appears to be in the opposition's tank. How well I remember the campaign season.

"CNN with regularity appears to be in the opposition's tank."
I would say CNN is in the tank (none in particular), and sinking.

Gotta agree there. Everybody, on all sides, complains about the supposed conservative or liberal bias of the MSM, when really it's just that they're horrendously bad journalists who ask idiotic softball questions on real issues, press people on trivial ones, and do nothing to inform the public. It was quite a change living in Ireland and hearing interviewers who actually asked real questions (as well as politicians who didn't get offended at being asked them, even if they're still giving out a lot of the same BS).

The zinger came only after Obama answered the substance part of Henry's rambling question. Obama then gave Henry a way out, Henry foolishly persisted in his "gotcha" mode, and only then did Obama lower the mace.
Obama is civil and not out to hurt people. But he is no pushover. I grow more impressed with him every week. We are indeed fortunate that we don't have zingers from president McCain.

Everyone has their limit and Ed Henry found where it resided with the President. But the spin job that CNN is putting on the exchange defies logic.

There is a problem in our country, we elected an intelligent, caring President who puts the American people above politics, and self interest. What's a press core ten-keys short of a keyboard to do?
You got it, Bussta. Ed Henry should call you for reporting lessons.

That was priceless. Almost as good was Obama's reply to Chuck T's ridiculous question...Did he even think that through?
"Why aren't you asking for specific sacrifices?"
Umm, Chuck, I'm glad your promotion is working out well, and you're ready to "sacrifice", but the rest of us are getting our asses kicked by this economy.

Yep old Chuck is just as bad and gets my goat just as much. We are stuck with these idiots. It's a good thing that blogs exist. It least now we have a place to express our true feelings and let these knuckleheads know how we feel.

I'm going to try to take Obama's advice. I wish the press corps would do the same.

I liked this answer very much, but not because it was perceived as a great comeback.
I liked the answer because it was honest, direct and put the spotlight on the press. Who are these people and are they asking insightful and diverse enough questions to properly inform and serve the whole country, not just DC ?
I've said this before-- I feel like the media, the traditional media, is lost--unable to find traction or relevance right now and they're certainly out of touch with most of America. Worse yet, they're out of touch with the international community.

Ed Henry is a perpetual @$$. I'm glad President made in abundantly clear for those who were earlier uninformed.

This is about the dumbing down of America. It seems there are fewer people in this country who can see the big picture. 24-hour news is all caught up in the moment. What they fail to appreciate is that Obama is weeks, if not months ahead of everyone else.
The press is having difficulty grasping long term strategy. After hearing strategery for 8 years, the press is probably thinking that is the right way to pronounce strategy, or cannot recall what the original word really was.
It is very disappointing to see that CNN is falling into lock step with Faux News. They are destined to achieve that lack of respect Faux news has as they continue on this path. If only we could find a serious, analytical, objective voice to report what is happening without a bunch of opinion.

This is great Bussta, I cannot remember reading your thoughts before. Good point. And I had fun listening to that conference yesterday.
A bit of a contrast do you not think? A press conference now and a press conference 6 months ago?

Dickday, I needed to replenish after the election, so I haven't been as active. However, watching the GOP and clueless reporters self-destruct is serving to re-energize me.
And yes the press conferences are good entertainment when journalists try to upstage the new Prez at the risk of being made to look foolish and inapt. Did someone again mention the name, Ed Henry? :-)

CNN has long since slipped below the standards of actual journalism. And in case anyone was wondering when THAT was, it was when Bernard Shaw hung it up.
March 25, 2009 3:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
Wow, I never really thought of Bernard Shaw being the moral compass of CNN but looking back, I think you make an excellent point. Great observation.

From Henry's frantic attempt to make himself look good: "So I waited patiently and then decided to pounce with a sharp follow-up. From just a few feet away, I could see in his body language that the normally calm and cool president was perturbed."
Pounce? With a sharp follow-up question? Sharp??? No, Ed. I don't think so.

It could also be construed as a dig at the politicians and pundits who had kittens about the AIG bonuses. Funny thing was, the government allowed AIG to pay the bonuses in the agreement they signed. Seems like after everyone "knew what they were talking about" they had to back pedal in a hurry.
Great for the President to articulate this logical, rational, and (dare I say) sane approach to public speaking.
March 25, 2009 5:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'm as pro-Obama as anyone, but I'm dismayed by this series of comments. It seems to me that this question regarding what was known when on the AIG bonuses has been echoed for days in the press and is a fair issue. The Administration's outrage on this matter, including the President Obama's, implied that they were discovering that the bonuses took place at the same time that the public did - that everything was unfolding real-time. It now turns out that they knew sometime earlier, and in fact, there seems to have been specific wrangling in the legislation between Treasury and Senator Dodd regarding whether to allow the bonuses to be granted at all. Given that background, one would think the Administration, including the President, would have had a better, more thoughtful response when the news first broke about the bonuses, beyond, basically, "I'm outraged too". When the President was asked about this, as part of a somewhat muddled question by Ed Henry, the President chose to respond to one part of the question and ignore other parts of the question. When Ed Henry followed up on the AIG bonus piece, he was dismissed with the now famous "I like to know what I'm talking about" line. That, to me, is still an insufficient response and not an example of a thoughtful leader "smacking down" an impertinent journalist. Why shouldn't we hold the Administration accountable for, at the very least, tacitly allowing these bonuses to be granted, and for clearly disclosing the time-line associated with the discovery that the grants actually took place?
All in all, this AIG bonus issue is all symbolism. The dollars, while large, are insignificant in light of the billions the company has received and the trillions any economic solution will require. That said, as a piece of symbolism, I don't think the President's response to Ed Henry's follow up is something to admire; rather, I think it falls into the same petty, one-line-zinger, tit-for-tat nonsense that I thought only conservatives liked to cheer.

Hikus, where is your proof that you are pro-Obama. It's certainly not in your posts or comments which are non-existence. So therefore the jury is still out on that claim.
As for Henry, many of us are tired of reporters' got you moment when their intent is more to grandstand than get an answer to a question. Henry's actions bordered on being disrespectful and the President rightfully placed him in check!
That's not just my opinion, but the opinion of the majority of persons who listened to the exchange.
March 25, 2009 6:37 PM | Reply | Permalink
What I meant when I said I was "pro-Obama" was that I support his policies and Presidency, voted for him, gave as much money to his campaign as I could afford, have had one of my very best friends nominated by him and now confirmed by the Senate and think that after some 60+ days in office believe that he is on track to possibly be the best President that this county has ever had. All of which is irrelevant to whether or not Ed Henry's question was legitimate. I still hold it was legitimate but respect everyone on this blog's opinion that it wasn't. I'm clearly in the minority here, which is part of why I posted my thoughts.
With regard to whether or not the question was disrespectful, I don't think it was, but I also don't think the press has a duty to be respectful to the President or any other elected official. In fact, I wish the press was a whole lot more disrespectful to President Bush, especially during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, the warrantless wiretapping, the torturing of suspects, etc. etc.
At any rate, thanks for your blog. I think it's good stuff and look forward to following it more closely.

Hikus, thanks for the follow-up. I took offense to Henry (or any reporter) because he wasn't asking a question, he was conducting a cross-examination. He cut the Prez off in mid sentence had a smirk on his face and was really full of himself as in I have the mike, so I have the power. I don't like those pitbull tactics period whether the [victim]is the president, an athlete, or the person next door. It was a got ya moment where the person perpetrating the got ya, was got.
