great analysis. This is horrifying. Whatever you think of Clinton, her demonstrable problem with the truth is reason enough to keep her out of a Cabinet post. I'm amazed the people of NY find her to be acceptable as their Senator. She's not trustworthy, and Sec of State is no post to offer for political reasons. Let her be the drug Czar or something.

MJ continues to miss a key element of the conflict. Israel is no longer dealing with the Palestinians. They are dealing with Iran. Hamas is now almost completely under the authority of the IRG, just like Hezbollah in Lebanon. It is an open secret militants are smuggled out of Gaza for training in Iran and smuggled back in.

Iran DOES NOT want a negotiated settlement. They want Israel to disappear, and they have made this clear many times in public statements. They were instrumental in killing the Palestinian reconciliation talks last week in Cairo aimed at bringing the two factions together. Again, this strengthens their hand and weakens Egypt's influence.

Obama can send as many envoys to Gaza as he wants. At this juncture, peace is going to require a deal with Iran, and they haven't indicated any willingness to compromise on this issue.

here's a newsflash -- the majority of gay people DON'T WANT to get married. Huh? Yep, check the stats folks. MA, after the initial surge is issuing very few same-sex licenses in the state. Spain has hardly any after allowing it in their country. This is a tiny minority within a minority screaming for their rights. The American people do not want legalized gay marriage right now, and with the relatively few people affected by this -- we've got a lot more important things to focus on.

She has it leaked that her name is on the list for SS -- and as an aside it's the only way to "heal the party". Does anybody believe this party needs healing after the election? Hillary Clinton has ALWAYS looked out for her own political self-interests first, the country 2nd, and the party 3rd. She will not be loyal, and has a demonstrable and documented problem with telling the truth. Bill Richardson has a better resume and a better disposition. This is Obama's 2nd most important decision behind his VP, and he better get this right. No Hillary!!!

Radicals got a lot of traction during the Depression, especially the Communists of course. I have discovered that W's grandfather, Prescott Bush, was part of a coup plot to overthrow FDR. Yep, you can Google this and you will get enough hits to take this from conspiracy theory to historical facts. There is mention of this in the Congressional Register, but the names of the plotters were omitted as part of an amnesty deal.

He's going to dilute legislation with the threat of "losing his seat" if he doesn't get his way, and the Alaska oil lobby will simply transfer their allegiance to him -- for a price. 60 seats doesn't mean lock step voting at all -- it means a lot of internal squabbling when many of these Senators come from vey red states like Montana and Alaska or Georgia.

Serious work lies ahead, and we have to think like Americans -- and that means holding ALL politicians accountable regardless of party. Ted Stevens went to trial and he should be banished and even put in jail, but what about Chris Dodd? His sweetheart Countrywide loan is the exact same thing -- an illegal gift. Why is he walking around like the cock of the walk?
The Berlin analogy isn't valid here. Berlin was divided -- by the very parties at odds with each other. There was no impartial military force available to occupy the city at the time. Jerusalem would be quite different if you had a force made up of Chinese/Russians/Africans etc... The key is that no terrorism or subterfuge would be tolerated and would be met with brute force. The int'l community has never shown the stomach to take on these kinds of thorny and implacable problems with the resolve required to see it through. Only the US has done that in the past, which is why we still have to pay for troops in South Korea.

this is a nice sentiment, but it ignores the gains African Americans have made in every level of society. Condi Rice and Colin Powell -- Sec of State -- treated as no big deal because they were appointed by "racist Republicans" -- even called Uncle Tom's by the rabidly hate-filled Harry Belafonte.

Truth is African Americans hold every important post in our society and have for quite some time. Obama is symbolic only in the fact that he's POTUS, but take a look at American politics and any other continent -- including Africa itself which is viciously tribal in many countries. We are LIGHT YEARS ahead of the rest of the world.

MJ the EU is very racist, still. You only have to look at their Parliament to see that. Second, we didn't "join the world" with Obama's election. The idea that the int'l community has been moving in lock step and we were the odd man out is nonsense. Russia and China are the most unilateral countries in the world -- that's the fact, Jack, and both of them rabidly xenophobic.

Re: Jersusalem I like the idea of an int'l city as it's own nation-state. It works for the Vatican, but basically you would have the UN running it's governmnet. It's not a perfect solution but i think the best of the lot.

Public opinion has to weigh in here as well. At least on drilling Dems are standing against public opinion polls. 75% want more drilling. So, if the GOP filibusters a new energy bill -- it could actually make them gain traction.

Again, if the Dems fall prey to arrogance and "we know what's good for you" legislation, they'll only hold this majority another 24 months.

Barbara Boxer's energy bill is a looming disaster. It raises the cost of electricity, home heating, and prices at the pump -- all in the name of producing "green" energy with unproven technologies. It is the most bone-headed legislation pending, right now, but she is going to try and ram it through.

Second, thanks for admitting, at least, that your article needed serious editing. No one can read your article and conclude anything other than that you believe Nixon's policies have guided us all the way up to Tuesday's elections. If you have to continue to explain what you wrote -- that's a hallmark of bad writing.

I also grade the choice based on Emanuel's position on the board of Freddie Mac. We're on the hook to the tune of trillions for the scandal at that organiazation, and the CEO's were forced to resign. That is the extent of the accountability in Washington over the most monumental mortgage crisis in history. Emanuel gets kicked upstairs to the White House. Nothing has changed.
