The Arab Summit Nothing New Under The Sun

It's hard to quantify what was accomplished at the Arab Summit. Clearly, the Saudis are feeling pressured to step up and take a leading role in addressing the problems of the region.

Abdullah pointed this out in his remarks, and chided the group's lack of unity, which leaves the region weak and vulnerable to foreign influence and interference.

The next logical step would have been for Abdullah to address the major problems of the region and call for action and co-operation. These include Lebanon, Darfur, Iraq, economic co-operation, fighting appalling levels of poverty and illiteracy in the region.

Abdullah said nothing about any of these issues, and neither did any of the other delegates, except in a very general closing statement. The ONLY issue addressed at this summit was Israel, and the League dusted off the same moldy peace plan they offered a few years ago and held it out as an olive branch to Israel. Not only that, they backed their offer with threats, stating that if Israel didn't accept this peace offer, the "lords of war" would be unleashed. Even the moderate King Abdullah of Jordan is telling Israel they must accept this.

What do you call a non-negotiable ultimatum backed up by threats of violence? Which one of these Arab governments would ever accept a peace proposal offered to them in such a manner?

This summit succeeded only in absolving Arab leaders of any guilt over the failure of peace with Israel. They've offered Israel a deal they know will never pass in Tel Aviv, but it gives them diplomatic cover to refuse to talk to Israel and now blame them for any violence to come.

"There is nothing new under the sun", and the Arab Summit personified the phrase. None of the sectarian conflicts, genocide, pressing economic problems, or peace with Israel were dealt with. Crowned heads continue to bury themselves in the Arabian sand, and the region continues it's march towards civil and social meltdown.

In the next 12 months, we will see all the latest initiatives fail, Olmert will be replaced as PM, Israel will grow weary of the daily rocket barrages and reoccupy Gaza. "There is nothing new under the sun".

Brook:

Not true. Read this report in the Beirut Daily Star. This is just some of what the Summit promoted:

- Affirm a just and comprehensive peace as a strategic option for the Arab nation and the Arab peace initiative that draws the right path for reaching a peaceful settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict based on the principles and resolutions of international legitimacy and the land-for-peace formula.

- Call on Israel to "accept the Arab peace initiative and seize the available opportunity to resume direct and serious negotiations on all tracks."

- Create working groups to carry out contacts with the United Nations, United States, Europe and Russia to mobilize support for this initiative and start serious negotiation.

- Act diligently to protect the Arab identity ... and strengthen belonging to it in the hearts and minds of children, adolescents and young men and women, since Arabism is not a racist or ethnic concept, rather it is a unified cultural identity, with the Arabic language as its means of expression.

- Give utmost priority to the development of education ... so as to deepen the common Arab identity, respond to the needs of modernization and comprehensive development, deepen the values of dialogue and creativity, and strengthen human rights principles and women's effective, positive participation.

- Develop joint Arab action in the educational, cultural and scientific fields, through activation of existing institutions and offering them the required significance and the needed human and financial resources, particularly concerning the advancement of scientific research; the joint production of books, programs and materials for children and teenagers; the launching of a broad translation movement from and to the Arabic language; and the promotion of the Arabic language ... in all fields, including communications, mass media, Internet, and science and technology.

- Spread the culture of moderation, tolerance, dialogue and openness, to reject all forms of terrorism and extremism as well as all exclusionary, racist trends, campaigns of hatred and endeavors to question our humanistic values or defame our religious beliefs and holy places, and to warn against growing sectarianism for political purposes that aims to divide our nation and ignite destructive sedition and civil strife."

Can't you see that Israel and the moderate Arabs regimes are facing the same threat from radical Islam? I think that's what the "lords of war" comment referred to. It wasn't a threat, it was a warning of the risk of a failure to find a Israeli-Palestinian peace soon.

The Star column reflected the closing statement, but there is not much behind these words to turn them into concrete action on any of the issues.

No negotiations were offered and no compromises offered for a plan that amounts to national suicide for Israel. It's a Potemkin Village of a peace plan.

Brook: Did you notice that the initiative says it's goal is to find a "just solution" to the problem of the Palestinian refugees, rather than calling for a "right of return"? It's a subtle difference, but quite a significant one.

I'll stress again that this is a way to co-opt the more radical elements in Arab society, by allowing the moderates to take the lead - and credit (deserved, really, for making the proposal) - for the actions which lead to the formation a independent Palestinian state. The fortunes of Hamas would be significantly diminished by the success of this Initiative.

Of course, if Israel is absolutely convinced the Arabs aren't serious, they could call their bluff by agreeing to it, don't you think? :-) After all, what's the alternative?

lol, or if Olmert called for a national day of celebration and invited the entire Arab League as his guests with a lot of pomp and circumstance to start the negotiations. You think anybody would show up?
