The reason McCain might not have had an easy answer to how many houses he owns, is that he doesn't own any.  Apparently, trust funds, corporations and limited liability real estate companies own the houses he lives in.  That means that McCain doesn't have a mortgage, pays no property taxes and since he only reports his salary as earned income which he offsets by donating his book royalties to charity, probably pays no taxes at all.   From what I can tell, he doesn't even own a car...71 years old, footloose and taxfree.
