But saying that marriage (the two-partner structure) is a product of evolution, and is wired deep within us, is just a step away from saying "traditional" marriage (male-female, with kids, with the man being the dominate partner) is a product of our evolution, and is part of our DNA.

The drive to reproduce is part of our DNA. Beyond that, it gets complex. Assumptions that our culture, our traditions in the USA in 2008, are the result of evolution (physical, not cultural), is like saying that we follow certain traditions because God wants us to.

Marriage isn't a product of evolution, it's a product of society.

I was watching an History Channel thing on the Dark Ages last night. They pointed out that the idea of a man having a few wives and concubines, especially if he was wealthy, was accepted in Europe. It was the Church that put a lid on that. (No, I'm not arguing that I should have a harem.)

The product of evolution, I think, is humans' need to form groups, tribes, families, etc. And our ability to be flexible (or, to be able to change over the centuries) with these "traditions" as conditions change.

Hey. I never owned one. But right now we have our first American flag flying outside our house. Cry about that!

I nearly cried this morning watching the Daily Show recording from last night. The entire cast was going nuts in the skit. They cut to them going backstage, running up stairs, going out into the light. Then there's clips of wildlife, chimps cuddling baby chimps. Someone says that this is the world after Bush. Anyway, all who haven't seen it, watch it. I know there's been a lot of media to take in from last night.

I was in downtown Kalamazoo, drinking (a lot) with friends (many who joined the cause to register voters and knock on doors). We then casually bluffed our way into the sold-out Democratic Party party. Stepped outside to smoke cigars with a friend, and we decided that it was like New Years Eve + the fall of the Berlin Wall.

We headed back, and were running into deleriously happy people. "Did he win it!?!" Yes he did -- we missed the big announcement in the ballroom.

No matter. Everybody was hugs and handshakes. Saw our state rep. Robert Jones, one of the few successful black politicians in our area, just exploding with joy at the podium -- he's usually pretty low-key.

McCain got booed when he showed up on the screen, but everybody responded positively to his speech. If he'd been like that in the race, maybe he have done a bit better.

Then the speech from Grant Park. There were too many cheers -- I couldn't catch everything. But it was clear that we got ourselves a president of Abe Lincoln quality.

Then to home. Wife decided today we're putting a pole and American flag on our house. This is, and always has been, Real America.

My feet hurt, my knee is also hurting (when did I get old?). But, dang, walking around last night and today was just the thing to ease the spirit.

Yes, I did it for selfish reasons.

I have been angry for eight years. The tight ball in my gut is now disappearing.

It seemed like I wasn't needed to bang on doors for Obama. Almost everyone I talked to was excited to vote for him. If they looked peeved to have to answer the door, I just had to mention that we have to make history happen, and every one broke out in a huge smile.

Maybe I helped get one person to decide. A 20-something woman this morning, she tells me, "Oh, yeah. Well, I haven't thought about it much." I told her that this was the time, she had until 8 to think about it. We needed her.

Black Panthers made me vote for Obama! Then Malcolm X made me walk around neighborhoods to GOTV! I tried to tell them that as a white man, I couldn't do such things, but they waved big sticks and Korans at me. So intimidating!
