What Are You Singing?
Hi there, come on in. Another long and exhausting day full of vitriol, heartbreak and angst. At least if you watched the news or spent much time on-line. If you were lucky enough to explore the rest of what life has to offer perhaps you were able to manage a smile. Find yourself a seat somewhere while I get you whatever you need. Like it? It is soothing, I agree. Perhaps not a perfect fit for everyone, but sometimes gentle music can lead to peaceful thoughts ... and the immeasurably important deep breath. Before you get settled, add something to the queue for the evening - a song or two or a favorite movie, your choice. As always.
What's that? Oh, don't worry. The threads are getting so bare that I'm often surprised that the stuffing doesn't spontaneously envelope the room. Funny thing about that ugly blue chair. It holds the memories and touches of so many, yet it never releases any of them. The tattered cushions used to glow with the pride of being new, worthy of purchase. Tightly knit and impervious to spills and splatters. The worn arms were strong and true under pressure. Now ... the cushions are tired and the arms are aching. It tried so hard to remain beautiful even as time took it's toll and it's youth. It failed, but it learned. Now the wise, old, ugly blue chair treasures every hand it holds, loves every soul it comforts. The threads are bare. Don't be afraid to cause injury, since every tear is another wrinkle of pride.
I'll be right there, just give me a moment to grab our drinks. What a fabulous song! Forgive me if I start singing loudly and with rediculous abandon - I might even dance the cheap Zin out of the kitchen. That's not nice! Okay then, smart aleck, what are you singing?

Just listening to stuff right now, actually. A little rock and roll, a little R&B.
I don't think I sang anything today, but I'm open to suggestion...

Trot o Joe, Trot o Joe, you're the silliest pony I know, Trot o Joe, Trot o Joe, you like goin' to the rodeo...
I had all 3 of my darlings today. We sang silly songs, painted the salt dough beads we made yesterday w/ red glitter paint (they get strung into a very fancy necklace tomorrow!) watched a rousing episode of "Handy Manny" and just generally had a wonderful time. They played and let me visit the site a few times...perfect day...

Thanks for the invite, Missy. Today I have bagels, lox and cream cheese along with the inevitable French Roast Coffee.
The blue chair is a metaphor - for something. You see blue chairs in all kinds of painting in museums and stuff. Course, they're not usually ugly, but that's not the point - if there is a point. Were you able to follow this? Good! I didn't. :-)
May I suggest a little of the ole do re mi fa so la ti do if you want to get everyone in the dancing mood?

This morning, looking out the east kitchen window across the sprouting corn field, the sun was just up, burnishing the mist that hangs above the headwaters of a nearby river. The scene made me think of the lyrics to this song by John Denver...
Summer
Silently the morning mist is lying on the water
Captive moonlight waiting for the dawn
Softly like a baby's breath a breeze begins to whisper
The sun is coming, quick you must be gone
Smiling like a superstar the morning comes in singing
The promise of another sunny day
And all the flowers open up to gather in the sunshine
I do believe that summer's here to stay
And oh I love the life within me
I feel part of everything I see
And oh I love the life around me
A part of everything is here in me
Riding on the tapestry of all there is to see
So many ways and oh so many things
Rejoicing in the differences, there's no one just like me
Yet as different as we are we're still the same
And oh I love the life within me
I feel part of everything I see
And oh I love the life around me
A part of everything is here in me

Oddly enough, this morning I'm singing The Beatles' "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window". The song has been stuck in my head for two hours now. Is it too loud, Missy? I can turn it down some. Better yet, I'll follow it up with "Blackbird." Good song for that blue chair, eh?

I'm so sorry for disappearing last night, glad to know that everyone made themselves at home. The coffee smells heavenly ...

Oh yes, the coffee was just right. Ethiopian today, just that perfect strength-point - not thin, not "chunky", just kind of...wake up or else.
Good afternoon, Missy - you're still on the charts.
This one never was, but it's very, very good:

Dag, I JUST posted lyrics from a song. Guess everybody's in the mood for a melody now.
So your brother's bound and gagged
And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come to Chicago just to sing?
In a land that's known as 'Freedom'
How can such a thing be fair?
Won't you please come to Chicago for the help that we can bring?
We can change the world
Re-arrange the world
It's starting (If you believe in justice)
It's starting (If you believe in freedom)
To get better
Now...these lyrics, without the music and arrangements, sound like tired marching orders. You just have to listen carefully, with the right historical attitude, and an intelligent appreciation for irony, I think.

I don't want to disturb the easy-listening vibe. So I'll just throw on my noise-canceling headphones and keep working to my Friday playlist.
3rd Bass is currently on my iPod, and, appropriately enough for a Friday, Johnny Kemp is in the on-deck circle.

Now here you come baby, with your tail draggin the gravy,
You know your Ps and Qs,
But what you don't know baby is you're giving me the blues
You got juice on your chin
Eggs on the drainboard
Pie on the wall
Dirt on the rug
Now I come home late, and I stumble and swore
You won't even give me a hug,
You've got my things all laid out
Laid out by the door
I'm leaving
I'm gonna take up with a mermaid and leave you
Land lubbin women alone leave you
Land lubbin women alone!
You said you had it together once
Now your head's round the bend,
I'm telling you woman you better get back together again
Or I'm gonna grow fins
And go back to the water again
I'm gonna take up with a mermaid
And leave you land lubbin women alone!
-Captain Beefheart, "Grow Fins"

Wonderful. Home from another long day to sounds of melodies I don't know ... but are now in my heart.
I may be pushing my luck here, but did anyone bring dinner? Coffee this morning with seashell's bagels, lox and cream cheese was perfect, but I skipped lunch and cheap Zin doesn't sit well on an empty stomach.
And it's very nice to see some of you who don't drop by too often. Thank you for adding to the atmosphere.

There's a big bowl of pasta salad w/ asparagus, artichoke hearts and pine nuts in the fridge, along w/ the makings for strawberry shortcake...fresh strawberries mashed up w/ just a little powdered sugar...the whipped cream is in there, too, and a little lemon pound cake on the counter as a base. Should keep you from starving and there's plenty for everyone!

Yikes! Almost forgot, the pasta salad is best with crushed tomatoes and feta cheese on top...there are bowls of each hiding in there as well. Don't be afraid! I know the fridge has a scary reputation, but it's clean for now!

Oh, Still. The pasta salad sounds perfect - but you know me better than that. Am I expected to resist the strawberries?? Nonsense, woman.
If anyone is quick enough, help yourself. But I have to say that strawberries with powdered sugar go surprisingly well with cheap Zin in the ugly blue chair. Yep, mine for the moment.
The music stopped - what gives? Somebody play something wonderful ...
