How's Your Candle Burning Tonight?

Hi there, come on in.  No, don't worry about that.  The lights are just low 'cause it feels like a quiet evening.  You know you're welcome ... when have I ever turned you away?  All right, then.  May I get you a glass of wine?  I actually went shopping recently, so I have a small selection.  Find a seat, I'll join you in a minute or two.

I love candles.  Especially if one or two are scented, while the rest lead to relaxation without the need for flamboyance.  Not too flowery, not too fruity.  Not too ... anything, really.  The kind of scent that you only catch if you lean in the right direction, or pass by before you realize it's there.  Like a woman's perfume.  Or a man's aftershave.  Hardly even strong enough to state it's purpose - yet still, it lingers.

Then there's the flames within the shadows they cast.  A light bulb is so stern, so solid in it's conviction.  It's on or it's off.  Period.  But a flame bounces and plays, dances and cowers.  It teases the mind with the idea that it might disappear, quietly fading ... fading.  Then, a second wind, a brilliant moment and it's reaching for the climax just before it loses it's nerve and the flicker calms.  Show off.

Flames come in many diverse disguises.  Always with one pure need - a catalyst.  A simple scented wax candle for pleasure, an oil hurricane lantern for safety, a wood burning fire for warmth.  Flame is passion.  Without flame, without passion, life would be not only boring - it wouldn't smell nearly as nice.

So, my candles tonight burn softly, but they have been known to blaze when my passion in life is ignited.  I admit to having singed and burned a few things along the way.  I've also comforted and loved with a gentle light.  Depends on the catalyst, I suppose.

How's your candle burning tonight?

Hi, Missy...glad you're here tonight.

Mine is burning at both ends...My mom always said I did that. I thought I'd grow out of it, but I haven't. I guess that's good thing. Tryin' to cram 3 lives into one lifetime!

Tonight I'm sad about intolerance and grown ups acting like toddlers...Can I talk you into a quick neck rub before the party starts? Maybe that and a TALL glass of wine will lighten my mood a little.

Oh, BTW I put a huge plate of homemade chocolate toffee fudge on the coffee table! Eat up!

user-pic

Now how do you expect me to rub your neck when you're tempting me with chocolate toffee fudge?? Here's your Zin, my dear friend, and I'll wait on the fudge. I understand your mood, so let's just let it go for now, OK?

user-pic

I'm feeling more relaxed already, thanks...

user-pic

hi barefoot were playing in the room you are welcome to join

user-pic

The room, there may be a monkey in it.

user-pic

I get scared when monkeys and chickens play together.

user-pic

you should be scared, very scared...

user-pic

More wine? Or how about some of that fudge ...

user-pic

I'm fudged out! Made 4 batches last night, so of course I have to make sure it's good!

Back in the days, though, when internet time cost $4.95 an hour, flames had much less pleasant connotations. I was involved in many a flame war back in my younger, more passionate days. So it's funny how the idea -- even the image -- still makes me squirm a bit.

I also have to come to the defense of light bulbs. A candle may flicker with mystery and romance, but there is an inherent ... maybe dishonesty is the wrong word, but it's the only one I can think of. The low light hides imperfections, lets you get away with a blemish, or a twitch, that the uninterrupted clarity of a soft-light won't allow. Romance and candlelight may set a mood, but there's a lot to be said for blatantly putting everything on display, consequences be damned.

Or I might just be being a jerk.

On an unrelated note, are you going to be hanging around for the rest of the week, or are you shutting down the place for the holidays? Want to know my deadline for gift-giving. Or to prepare myself for a Christmas week sans the open door.

I'll be here, the door will be open. Sometimes the harsh light of reality is a necessary evil ... but I prefer seeing evil through shadow when possible. Besides, I hate it when a bulb suddenly dies. So much easier to deal with a candle "going out".

Paying $4.95 an hour for the internet would make me squirm, too.

Hi, Matt...still running?

user-pic

Hi Still --

Yeah, worked out this afternoon, trying to fix the things that caused me problems last time. The next race is March 1 -- I'm trying to finish inn under 35 minutes. And then the big one, a 10K in May. Still a long way to go, but I'm a long way from where I started.

Thanks for asking.

user-pic

Good for you!

Maybe time for a new group - veterans of flame wars. I remember things erupting over people quoting back whole threads for a one-line reply.

Maybe the best one was on a mailing list about 15 years ago, where some guy left his auto-responder on and went on vacation without temporarily unsubscribing. He was getting death threats very quickly, as the thing started replying to itself as well as everything else that came in.

I also know someone who crashed a mail server by doing that, and the IT guys were definitely not happy.

(My first account was a UNIX shell...)

Hi, all! I'm just here to deliver the pizza. Gotta' lot more people to see and stops to make yet tonight. So tell me who's got the money for these hot pizzas and I'll be on my way.

user-pic

ooohhh, that sounds perfect! I'll treat! And here's a big fat tip! Thanks!

user-pic

Feel free to stop by for a beer on your way home.

user-pic

Well, guys, I'm really tired tonight, so I'm checkin' out early. Thanks for being here. Your mere presence cheers me.

G' night

user-pic

'Night, still. Thanks for everything. Sleep peacefully.

user-pic

Hey, all - just got back from a local second-run house. Who's still around?

user-pic

I am, me. You just got back from a what?

user-pic

Second-run house. A movie theater that plays things that are a bit less than current. They do things a few months old, and sometimes midnight movies.

Cold out up here tonight...

user-pic

Well, now I feel stupid. What movie did you see?

I suspect that "cold" is putting it mildly.

user-pic

You're not. Went with some friends to see "Religulous" with Bill Maher.

It's only -5 right now. Had a 15-20 degree drop this afternoon in the space of an hour. (It's the wind chill that gets ya....)

user-pic

About that time - so 'night, all. Sleep peacefully, I'll see you soon.
