Has the GOP declared "War on Obama?"
Andrew Sullivan at the Atlantic thinks so:
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/02/the-gop-has-dec.html
So does this guy: http://daily44.wordpress.com
The Repubican party does not care about the country though that's for sure!

What a silly question. Of course they have!
But from their point of view it is Obama who doesn't care about the country. How can they think that one wonders eh? Because they think they are the country. Once you come to grips with this you begin to understand a little better just how warped and dangerous their world view really is.

When you have been marginalized and found wanting in original ideas When you inherently distrust that to which you have been elected to serve you are left with few choices. You can either dig in your heels and lash out incoherently fighting to the last or admit you were wrong and become a loyal opposition offering valid and well thought out alternatives. The former is far easier than the latter.

when you realize congressional districts are immune to loss you understand republicans lose nothing by obstructing.
senators less so and thats why you see a few voting with the dems.
but i have argued all along to play hardball with the repigs because nothing would appease them.
maybe Obama has acted to convince the country he indeed does want to work with them.
i would hate to believe he is dumb enough to really have expected anything constructive from them.

Hello . . . JadeZ
Then don't allow yourself to believe it.
I'd venture to say that he fully realizes that the obstructionists will cut their noses off in spite of their face...

Looks to me like a kind of cancer, which, if allowed to grow and spread, will kill the body politic.

The real battle?
While watching the obstructionists rail on about Obama, don't overlook the real battle that is the continuing attack on the Pelosi/Reid consortium.
2010 is on the horizon and the congressional level is the real battlefield.
That's the "crap or get off the pot" time...

Republicans in both houses are going to do everything they can to impede progress or success of any sort on anything.
Their goal is to create a public perception of this administration and this congress as being inept and not up to the task of running the country.
They could care less that they are actively standing as an impediment to getting the country straightened around. Their concern is not the average working American. Their concern is the power and the money that comes from being in the drivers seat. They are going to lie and nitpick everything in order to have a case to make in November 2010.
What republicans aren't counting on and may not realize is voters may actually be getting smarter.

It's what they did to Clinton and what they will continue to do until somebody smacks them down.

They declared war on him when he got the nomination. This is just an escalation of that same war. When they lost in November, they strategized on what their next steps would be. It didn't take long because they each have a tattoo on the inside of their wrists that says: OBSTRUCT.

Need you ask. Actually the republicans have declared war on everyone on the left and quite a few in the center as well.

BTW, from blogs I see the new Republican meme seems to be that that Obama has achieved nothing in his life and he is only President because of "affirmative action." That's their latest, smirking conceit after "socialism", i.e., "affirmative action."

Question: is the current-day Republican party as intransigent and blindered and resistant to change as the segregationists of the 1950s and 1960s? I lived in the South during that time and what I'm hearing and seeing from the Reps in Congress sounds and looks awfully familiar.
And the segregationists were not defeated by being "smacked down" or resisted with equal force. They became increasingly irrelevant and their ranks were weakened by individual defections or lessening of steam as some individuals' consciences caught up with them.
Listen to Joe Biden's farewell speech to the Senate (or read his book) and listen to the statements of John Stennis over those years. It's very moving and real ... and instructive.
I think President Obama knows that this is a war ... and that it can be won not by direct engagement but by simply continue doing what is right and important. Part of that is continuing to reach out to the opposition and leave the door open enough to let those whose 'better angels' catch up with them and bring about change.
A number of Senate Republicans knew that this bill needed to be passed and they were not opposed. Check out this comment from Arlen Specter quoted in today's Daily Dish.
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/02/the-gops-war--2.html
I absolutely believe this -- look at Specter, Snowe and Collins when they are interviewed. They aren't looking over their shoulders or facing the loss of lifelong connections and friends ....
I can't say that I admire those Republicans who are remaining silent and keeping their 'fingerprints' off this bill .... but (another lesson from Biden) it's pointless to question their motives. The only people of any importance in Washington right now are the administration, the Dems in Congress, the Republicans willing to stand up now, and the Republicans who are potentially willing to stand up in the future. The others - the intransigents - just don't matter. But we're making a mistake and slowing the process by failing to recognize that there are some fierce, determined warriors in in this GOP war against Obama and others who may not step forward now but may -- I think (hope?) will -- do so in the future.
I believe that Obama is dealing with this "war" in the best, most effective way possible: by refusing to directly engage in hostilities. It's an approach that can accomplish miracles, and has done so in the lifetime of some of us.
