Palin Still Doesn't Know What the VP Does

In another stunning display of ignorance Sarah Palin answers the question of what the job of Vice President entails.  During an interview with a local Colorado NBC affiliate she is asked a question from a third grader who wrote in "What does a Vice President do?"  Here is Palin's answer:

"They're in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom."

Apparently Sarah Palin has decided her job as VP would be to legislate and be in control of the senate.  Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, has a message for her
:

"This comment is all the more puzzling because this is at least the 2nd time she has said this. Gov Palin needs to re-read or perhaps read for the first time the Constitution. While the Vice President presides over the Senate, he or she is not in charge of it. Article 1 says The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided."

Many months back, when asked about the possibility of her becoming John McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin said in an interview that someone needs to explain to her "exactly what the VP does all day".  Apparently after all this time no one has.

I don't know why everyone seems shocked by her ignorance here. She's a creationist that lives in a state where the oil in the ground is clearly older than 6000 years old!

And her father taught science.

She is the walking poster child for the state of education in Alaska. Including sex ed.

I do think her incompetence and lack of qualification are important to emphasize and the press lightly dances around it, perhaps because of her celebrity. It seems to be most acceptable and have the best impact for celebrities and republicans to hit on her lack of qualification to be president.

Sorry Mar, I didn't see your post when I posted my a few minutes ago. Great minds think alike right? :)

Yup, Yup ;)

You would think the campaign would tell her finally what her job would be if they won... oh well I guess it really doesn't matter if they tell her at all!

Of course Cheney's been making a version of this argument too, claiming that the Constitution makes him part of both the legislative branch and the executive branch. Personally, I think the founders made a mistake when they gave the Vice President any power other than being a deputy of the actual President. Let's amend the Constitution to take away the Vice President's role as President of the Senate and his vote in the case of a tie. Instead, let's say that for a bill to pass it needs a majority (ties fail). And while we're at it, let's give the District of Columbia (and any future such districts) a single voting senator.

It isn't necessary for her to know: she isn't going to be elected.

And Alaska isn't going to be happy about that -- for which I would apologize except that I only have one vote against her.

Odd. Of all the people here, you are advocating for the citizenry to be ignorant of the way their government works?

Smart.

In her case, the less she knows the better -- especially through hands-on experience. (Talk about high maintenance.) That doesn't go for the rest of us, though.

She's ignorant, but in the most dangerous way.

It's very clear that if elected she would attempt to assert some new executive authority over the Senate. That she would fail, especially with a Democratic Senate, but that's not the point. Her clear goal is to undermine our constitutional democracy, and move us closer to the dictatorship of a "unitary executive."

Of a Theocracy I might add.

Folks, I think Palin knows very well what the VP's job is. She just isn't satisfied with it, and is using these interviews to lay the ground for extending the powers of the office. I suspect she thinks that if she repeats 'the VP is charge of the senate' often enough then the public - or that slavish portion of it which still supports her - will accept this as fact and, later, as a reality.

For her answers to the question 'what does the VP do?' reveal not so much an appalling ignorance but the truth of what she wants and intends to do as VP should she be elected.

Palin is unconstitutional, dangerous and unethical, and her manoeverings on the VP question echo the 'siezures of power' of fascists and demagogues. The best response to her undemocratic fantasising is to wallop her and her debased running mate with a massive landslide that will knock her back to Main Street, Wasilla for the rest of her loathsome career.

Damn these Koolaid sipping liberal third graders and their Gotcha! questions!!

They should have spent $150,000 on tutoring instead of a new wardrobe.
