How Is YOUR School Dealing With Tuesday's Speech?

As we have all heard for the last couple of dozen years, the religious rightwing has tried to place as many of its adherents on school boards as possible (the farm teams for higher office).  They have had mixed success, but the President's speech has given them a (minor) issue with which they can flex their muscles.  (less controversial than intelligent design/evolution).

So, I'm curious.  How is your school/school district/superintendent/whatever-the-governmental-unit dealing with this?  I'm sure that each of our schools have at least a few of the reactionary parents who are calling in today.

My district sent out an e-mail (and posted it on their website) last night.  As many of us do, they are "time-shifting" the speech, making it easy for parents to hold their students out, and agreeing not to use the "lesson plan".  (Given that the "lesson plan" contained that bone-headed language at first, I'm not too upset about that.)  It is about the middle-of-the-road response I expected.  Interestingly, neither the Superintendent nor the Board attached their names to it; the e-mail was from the "Community Relations Manager" and the website notice is unsigned.

I don't have time to survey other local districts myself (nor to make up the Cosmo-like quiz that I initially wanted to do on this), but I'm curious to know what my fellow TPM'ers are seeing.  Thanks.

Here's Kyrene School District's (suburban Phoenix-area, moderately-Republican) response:

The President of the United States is scheduled to address school children on Tuesday, September 8, at 12:00 pm EST, which means 9:00 am in Arizona. It is our understanding that the address will offer an opportunity for students to hear about the importance of educational goal setting and putting their best efforts forward in school. Technology allows us to be flexible with the time that we show this message. Kyrene will record the message and broadcast it to our middle school students in Academic Lab and to our Elementary students sometime during the last hour of the school day.

  • As always, parental preference is respected and this will be honored if you contact your school.

  • The Kyrene School District views this as an opportunity for students to hear a positive message that is aligned to the state guidelines in Character Education.

  • Some components of the lesson plan have caused objections. Therefore, the lesson plans will not be used in the classroom.

  • Our teachers will not be presenting this information in a political manner.

We encourage parents to speak with their children at home regarding the importance of goal setting and education in their lives.

I forgot to mention that I was also curious to see if a lot of schools use similar language. I'm sure that there has been a lot of listserv activity, and I'm sure that various talk shows/groups/whatever are urging "templates".

The teachers think it is media and republican hooey...even the repubs...The kids are disappointed that he will not be speaking to them about their help or what they can do for America!

The hypocrisy of the right is just astounding. When Ronald Reagen spoke to students strictly about policy it was A OK.

http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/speeches/1988/111488c.htm

PRESIDENT REAGAN: Well, thank you very much. Please, be seated. You know, this is a real treat for me, having you here, and to have in a little while the chance to answer some of your questions. Let me also offer a special hello to those of you who are watching on C-Span, or the Instructional Television Network. Thank you for inviting us into your home or your school today ...

And that is a vision that goes beyond economics and politics, it's also a moral vision, grounded in the reverence and faith of those who believe that with God's help, they could create a free and democratic nation ...

Because you see, the taxes can be such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper and to earn more and so forth because they have to give so much to the government ...

There was talk about having a gun ban in California. It didn't go through. But I got a letter from a man in San Quentin Prison. And from the prison he wrote me the letter to tell me he was in there for burglary, he was a burglar. And he said, "I just want you to know that if that law goes through, here in San Quentin there will be celebrating throughout the day and night by all the burglars who are in prison."

Now have Obama speak about personal responsibility and it's indoctrination. Why am I not surprised.

I'm always willing to have an intelligent conversation with somebody with opposing views. However finding someone with an intelligent opposing view is rapidly become impossible

Thanks for that, js. I wonder how much "the left" protested Reagan's? Probably not too much. (I don't remember it, but I was at an institute of higher learning then, and we didn't watch it.)

Here's a post that Dogtail made about the negative reaction of the Elk Grove schools: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/dogtail/2009/09/no-its-true-elk-grove-unified.php.
Thanks, Dogtail.

No It's True. Elk Grove Unified School District, CA Warning Parents About Obama Speech
September 4, 2009, 12:14PM

http://www.news10.net/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=66335&catid=2

Here is the link from television Channel 10 out of Sacramento. This is also posted on their website. The story ran on the news last night.

The only thing is, for people who know this school district, no one is surprised. They are notorious for this sort of stupidity and extremism. They are also a huge district with thousands of students. Your tax dollars at work.

I know many of you from the East Coast are horrified but here ya go. Welcome to a bankrupted California (not just in finances) as of 2009.

By the way, here are the questions that I e-mailed to my district:
***
1) What objections to the lesson plans were made? And, were they local objections or just objections that were picked up from around the country? I have read the lesson plan (http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/lessons/prek-6.pdf) and don't see anything objectionable.
2) Why didn't the Superintendent or the Board put their names on this response? It naturally leads one to wonder who developed the response, and who signed off on it.
3) Was the "time-shifting" done partially to make it easier for parents to keep their children from seeing the President speak at their level? Isn't there an added excitement factor to viewing it live, knowing that other children around the nation are watching, too?

I've already discussed this upcoming speech - and the goal-setting aspect - with my th grader, and ____ is looking forward to it.

I look forward to learning a bit more about Kyrene's response.

Feel free to use 'em if the situation fits.

I just posted a separate "blog entry" about Arizona's State Schools Superintendent, and his hypocritical comment that Obama is looking for worship from students next week. Tom Horne's full quote can be found here: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/azpaull/2009/09/hypocrite-alert-azs-schools-su.php

Our school district here in Ohio caved and is not showing the speech at all.

The superintendent claims he wanted to show it but didn't want "the kids" whose parents forbade them to attend or held them out to be singled out. He was doing it to protect the kids.

Yeah, right.
