Maricopa County Attorney is promoting right-wing talk show host's book on illegal immigration; hot on heels of news that he doles racketeering funds to religious groups

A few weeks ago, the Phoenix New Times exposed the County Attorney's propensity to use seized racketeering funds to organizations committed to "bring(ing) sinners to Christ" - a key constituency going into his re-election campaign this fall.   http://phoenixnewtimes.com/2008-06-05/news/andrew-thomas-spends-public-money-to-bring-sinners-to-christ/

Now, County Atty Andrew Thomas is apparently spending office money to "present" a "book signing" of a local talk show host and his tale of investigating the issue of illegal immigration by crossing the border undercover.  The KTAR website is unclear as to what money the MCAO is using to go into the business of promoting private authors, but it is not worded in a way to indicate that it is private campaign money.

Thomas and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio seem to have come to the conclusion that book-signing appearances for books aimed at their followers  are a valuable tool in their campaigns - Arpaio has his own book out, and is campaigning/hawking around the county.  But, using public funds for book-signings is taking it to another level of sleaziness.

My Heart Is Heavy; Sickening Display in Lebanon

Hezbollah released the remains of the two Israelis ambushed, which triggered the Israeli war against Hezbollah two years ago. They had never indicated whether the Israelis were alive or not, and Israel held out hope. In return, Israel release remains and several prisoners (including a notorious one).

But, it was the report on NPR this morning from the Lebanon side that disgusted me beyond belief.

<<<Hezbollah supporters set up a makeshift stage in the coastal town of Naqoura, where a brass band awaited the returning prisoners. On the platform stood a large photograph of a weeping Israeli woman. A nearby sign read, "ISRAEL IS SHEDDING TEARS OF PAIN."

"LEBANON IS SHEDDING TEARS OF JOY," read another.>>>
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92578250 (emphasis added)

Unfortunately, those disgusting signs tell us too much about what the terrorists' believe plays well with too many Arabs - the Muslims in Lebanon, the Palestinians, and the Arab world; you would NEVER see such a sickening display in Israel - even with the greater degree of freedom to dissent there.

My heart is heavy.

It is truly going to take efforts such as The Parents' Circle, to bring us to a point where NOONE would tolerate such disgusting crowing about the pain of another.

Good corner to be in, guys!  Thanks.

DON'T Mistakenly Go To www.fightthesmears.o__!

Someone's already put up a counter-site to Sen. Obama's fightthesmears.com.  (e.g. MO didn't use term "whitey".  TRUTH: she called them "crackas")

I haven't checked to see who owns this faux URL, but I'm surprised the Obama people didn't buy all of the extensions!

SOLID Evidence of McCain Encouraging VOTER FRAUD!!!

Or, at least, to the Bush Justice Department, it could be.  (If it was a Democrat's website, that is.)

I got such a chuckle out of Josh's item about McCain's website giving "Golf Gear" similar billing with his "Decision Center" and "Obama and Iraq" (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/198945.php) that I started wandering around my Senator's "store".

One of the tabs over there was for "Coalitions Apparel".  Curious, hoping that maybe he would have some "I'm British and I Heart McCain" or "Let's Nuke Iran Together" shirts, I clicked.

Oh, well.  Among the "coalitions" that get their own lapel pins are "African Americans," "Arab Americans," "Asian & Pacific Americans," "Jewish Americans," and "Americans With Disabilities."

Standing out like a sore thumb was "Hispanics."  NOT "Hispanic Americans."  Just "Hispanics."

If THAT doesn't breed (more) distrust of Sen. McCain among the Republican xenophobe demographic AND a Texas US Attorney investigation of voter fraud, nothing will.

Hmmmmm.

Soooo, Does This Mean That McCain IS For "Capitulation"?

I left the office earlier to the sounds of a McCain "sr. policy adviser" on MSNBC saying that Obama's Iran policy is "premature capitulation."

First, it is obnoxious and obnoxiously wrong. But, second, is she suggesting that McCain is for "capitulation" at the climactic moment?

Genuine Question re: DNC MI/FL legal memo: If the 50% sanction is mandatory...

I haven't had a chance to fully analyze the DNC legal memo that is setting up the Rules & Bylaws Comm meeting, but a nagging question keeps popping up:

--If the RBC can only reduce the 100% sanction re: MI&FL to the 50% sanction that was "automatic" under the Call To Convention, why wasn't that 50% mandatory sanction applied to the other states that moved in front of the Call To Convention calendar?  New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina (but not Nevada) ALL moved their primaries/caucus ahead of the Call To Convention calendar.--

The legal memo seems to state that the RBC's hands are tied because of the automatic/mandatory sanction.  What I am unclear on is whether the RBC removed that sanction from IA/NH/SC at that 12/3/07 meeting.
Anyone?

(The memo does seem to answer many of the gaps in my previously-posted analysis - http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/05/change-the-rules-which-rules-a.php .  I touched on the IA/NH/SC issue in that post, but the new memo seems to bring it to the forefront.)

Change the Rules? Which Rules? A Framework For a Resolution?

OK, the Rules Committee is meeting (again?) next week. And, again, we are talking about "changing the rules." The question is, what were the original rules, have they ALREADY been changed, and can/should they be changed again.

The following is my off-the-cuff-and-on-the-side research and framework for a resolution. In keeping with my journalist background, I have periodically tried to flesh out some of the gaps. In keeping with my political background, I have also brought this to the attention of people on several sides of this intra-party squabble and have brought it to a couple of media outlets, because I thought it could provide a basis for moving towards resolution.

At this point, I am interested in getting feedback on these comments. And, if anyone can fill the gaps or correct any errors, please do. (ping DNC members!).
*********
As we know, the Democrats (and the Republicans) wanted to protect and control the caucus/primary calendar. The Democrats' efforts began (this cycle) with its "Call to Convention," setting forth rules and procedures. In addition to the calendar restrictions, this document set out THE PENALTIES for states that violate the calendar.

Here's the "Call to Convention" (http://s3.amazonaws.com/apache.3cdn.net/de68e7b6dfa0743217_hwm6bhyc4.pdf)
Rule 20.C.1.a. (on page 24) has to do with challenges for "violation of timing". It states that if a state moves up (or back) its primary/caucus in violation of the desired calendar, the penalty SHALL BE a reduction of the pledged delegate allocation by 50% (exactly what the RNC did to FL and Mich.). And, no unpledged delegates ("super delegates") may vote.

So, did the DNC violate its own rules by ENTIRELY cutting off Florida and Michigan? More likely, the DNC legitimately voted to change the penalty to ZERO delegates. So, even if I'm missing something and the DNC didn't violate the rules, couldn't this be the basis for a resolution - "falling back" to the original rule?

Please note, I have sought, but have not yet seen, the minutes of DNC meetings, at which actions may have been taken to change Rule 20... or Rule 11. (Rule 20 refers to Rule 11, which sets forth the acceptable time frames for the delegate selection process. Interestingly - and perhaps, importantly - Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina (but NOT Nevada) also were in violation of Rule 11; so, there likely WAS some subsequent action to permit those three to move up, to refuse Michigan and Florida, AND to change the punishments.

Sure, Rules can be changed. But, the committee that promulgated the initial rules - and the DNC that approved them - initially thought that a flat refusal to seat any of the delegations was TOO PUNITIVE. That might form the basis for returning to the initially-approved penalty of 50% reduction.
*******
So, go ahead and let 'er rip.

Their Next Campaign Missive: "Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride"?

Today's campaign e-mail from the Nader crew carried the subject line:  "We Need Gas Money."

That was clever and cute... even though I hope he has to walk.

Obama Says NO to NC Debate, So How About a NEW Format?

The Obama campaign's talking points about the debate refusal are that the debates are twisted thru the media's filters.

So, why doesn't Clinton (or Obama) propose a NO-MEDIATOR DEBATE, where they question each other?

I think this would be great for BOTH of them AND for the DEMOCRATS.  I don't think either would have an advantage over the other, and I think it would show them both to be substantive.  (Seems unlikely that either would go negative.)

Holy, Shmoly! 26%? What is up, Kentucky?

I'm not a big SurveyUSA fan (automated pollers bother me for many reasons).  I know it is a "red state".  I know Sen. Obama is ahead in pledged delegates, etc.  I know the demographics thing.  I know it is only one state.  I know Sen. Clinton lost states like this, too.

I know all of these things.  But, HOW does the Democrat's front-runner trail 62-26% in a poll for the upcoming primary?  If our nominee is that clear, he - or, she - should not get blown out like that in any primary.

I've NEVER been a fan of "draft" efforts - potential candidates should get in and be tested.  And, I'm still not saying that we (Democrats) should look elsewhere.  But, this is certainly an argument against declaring the race over and/or compelling super delegates to vote for one or the other.

(footnote:  Obama performs 13 points lower than Clinton in a KY matchup vs. McCain)

TPM in real time?

Could it be?  It seems that comments are posting immediately, and my other article popped up right away, too.  This could be GREAT!

McCain's Gas Tax "Holiday" More Like a "Safety Cut"

My Senator, John McCain, continues to flounder to connect on economic issues.  I think that his newest proposal for a gas tax "holiday" for the summer driving season is a good one politically - on the surface.

Federal taxes are 18.4 cents/gallon. McCain claims it will have a stimulus effect on the economy. I think that would be minor. Right now, they have been predicting gas up to $4.00/gal this summer. So, McCain's proposal would keep it at about $3.80. I would think we are going to see a continued (slight) slowing in consumer gas consumption as the price goes up.

Meanwhile, I think that Sens. Clinton and/or Obama should immediately start pointing out that it was just a year ago that the bridge collapse in MN had all of us worrying about putting MORE money into infrastructure, and that the gas tax holiday would be counterproductive in the long run.

Of course, the prospect of a "tax cut" may win more voters than the prospect of the corresponding "safety cut".

"The Fmr Presidents: Third Shoe to Drop?"

(apologies to Robert Smigel for the title ripoff)

In the previous episode, The Fmr Presidents decided to create chaos in the 2008 Presidential campaign.

Clinton:  Hey, you guys.  I've already been busy.  You're slackin'.  Here, let me show you one more time.  Y'know that Bosnia thing has died down.  Watch what I'm gonna do!

Carter:  Well, ahm puttin' my plan into place now.  Y'heard me practically drool over Barack yesterday?  Tomorruh, I'm announcing my trip to Syria to meet with Hamas!  After that, ah've got one more ace up my sleeve - I just sent a goat-mail to Osama!

Clinton:  Well done, Jimmy, well done!

(HW) Bush:  OK, OK, you've both done great jobs!  I've been urging my son to keep up the troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I got Maliki to take that rash Basra action.

Carter:  Well, I thought that would actually produce some positive results, but you were right, George - it was a bad week for George and John.

Bush:  The piece of resistance, though, is set for next week.  Jimmy, you're scheduled to be on Stephanopoulas this Sunday, I've already told Blitzer's people that I'm available for later in the day.  I'm going to let them know that McCain and I met in Texas this week.

Clinton:  And???

Bush:  We were talking about the economy, I told John my hearing hasn't been good since my last skydive, and John looked at me and said, "READ MY LIPS, GEORGE.  NO NEW TAXES."
****
NEXT EPISODE:  The Fmr Presidents announce their joint candidacy on the Unity'08 ticket.  (Bill has two black eyes and a high-pitched voice.)

"PARTLY vindicated?" I'd say that Clinton is FULLY...

vindicated for using the story to highlight problems in our present health care system.
