First off, let's make one thing very, very clear. Obama is NOT PROMOTING SOCIALISM unless we define that term so loosely. If that's our metric, then Reagan, T. Roosevelt and pretty much everyone who's not a libertarian is a socialist, including most of the Republican Party (most of whom favor, or at least support, some variation of the progressive income tax).

You can be for or against socialism (this is another argument for another day), but Obama is not promoting socialism!

I hate that damn thing. I'm originally from Colorado and whenever I used to drive to/from there, I came to dread all the annoying signs saying "World's Largest Prairie Dog XXX in miles." These damn signs start well over 100 miles away!
It's the Kansas equivalent of "South of the Border" on I-95 out east.

Since I live in DC, I guess I better change the title on my business card to "Elitist."

I was also here on September 11. I heard the plane hit the Pentagon. I was working 2 blocks from the White House when word came in (incorrectly as it turned out) that multiple planes were headed right towards us. I remember being told to, "get the hell out of downtown, now!"

I also remember my family begging me to leave DC after 9/11. I remember my friend's families saying the same thing. Not one of us left. Even though we knew we were likely ground zero for any future attack, most of us were here to work for the country and no fucking terrorist was going to scare us away.

So FUCK YOU Palin. FUCK YOU McCain for even daring to suggest that we're elitists and somehow lesser Americans. We're in the ones in the crosshairs here. Al Qaeda isn't striking the World's Largest Prairie Dog in Kansas any time soon.

For argument's sake let's assume these polls are 100% outliers (which they could very well be). They will still garner a fair amount of attention and help further demoralize the McCain camp.

Further, people like a winner and there is always the possibility of them helping generate a bandwagon effect.

It's because we finally have a candidate who knows how to keep message discipline! Obama has made a very easy argument on taxes (make less than 250k, get a tax cut) and has hammered it home with no wavering. For years, the Republicans were masters at this while Democrats presented very nuanced and convoluted arguments (I'm not judging their merits here, just their presentation) which did not resonate with the American people, or were vulnerable to spin.

I think Obama's plan here was "keep it simple, stupid" and it's been a smashing success. Good on him!

Looking at these polls, I'm soooooo happy I decided to remain in DC just a little bit longer. I'm taking a job out in Europe in a few months, but managed to delay my start date long enough so I could see Obama inaugurated in DC. I'm not going to miss this piece of history!

I've spent 8 years in the city - nearly all of them under Bush - and now I'm leaving just when things seem to be turning round (politically speaking). Damn it!
