Garbage, Compost, Waste Removal - Recycling Here!
Most here invest their valuable time and energy into researching and creating their posts.
When others use the comments (ongoing) as a bully pulpit for their own
issues, better it should be dumped here.
When one chooses to hijack a post with the intent to not only circumvent, but disrupt the flow of positive communication (on poster's topic) with rants, insults and critiques that quickly evolve into personal attacks, well, it's really GARBAGE.
Those who infuse the garbage should (in my opinion) create their own posts about the issue they interject into the comments of the original post. Continuing to 'hijack' the post is disrespectful and interferes with positive, thoughtul discourse about the original topic(as intended by author). And that's garbage.
But, this can be an alternative arena for those who wish to harangue, argue or insult others with their comments that have basically nothing useful, constructive or even related to the subject post being abused. Some may choose to gather up other's garbage and bring it here. Or perhaps some may use this space to vent about the garbage.
I understand not all will agree or participate, but this is an option.

Obviously you know nothing of positive communication and your grasp on garbage collection would be laughable if it weren't so idiotic.
(Thanks! I feel better now!)

What!? I'm the victim here! I make one post disagreeing with a blog, and I am viciously attacked. What have I done to you?

Well done, Aunt Sam! Well done.
For the community welfare blogs like this will be put up as needed. If I hadn't seen this one, I was thinking today was a good day for a blog such as this.
Kudos!

I am sure the "intent" is rarely to purposely disrupt anything. People go back and forth all the time, sometimes on topic and sometimes off, but I hardly think it is some conspiracy to "hijack" threads. Trying to control the flow of comments on a blog is like trying to drive a car on a hockey rink.

I don't want to play, I want to ride the Zamboni, get a free t-shirt and get my picture up on the JumboTron (which always seems to come between the hot girls/cute kid dancing and the painted up men without shirts).

As recently posted in 'Attacking Trolls' ....
"We just don't need to waste a whole thread on it. Take it apart, then leave."
Jason, the post 'ANGRY' today by Bwak is a good example. All the off subject back and forth detracted from the issue and message of her post. If one wants to go off topic and debate nuances, critiques and base differences of opinion/philosophy ad nauseum that have nothing or very little to do with poster's intent, then I believe it would be beneficial and fairer to all to create a separate post to do this.
The noise shouldn't drown out the poster's intent. Wouldn't this approach be fairer to all?
And as for your statement, "Trying to control the flow of comments on a blog is like trying to drive a car on a hockey rink." .....
While it is fact, we can only control ourselves - we can choose to redirect the 'flow' to a better place with respect for all.

I understand the impulse, but I think it misses the whole point of blogs and blogging. Blogs are a conversation in a bar, not a group session on a single topic. It may start out one place and end up somewhere else. Sometimes they are hard to follow. Sometimes they are easy.
I would submit the thread you objected to, which centered on the notion of righting wrongs in a more effective manner, was actually in keeeping with the blogs topic. That if we want to change the situation that led to the anger acknowledging our common human instinct to let emotional responses sabotage our intended outcomes is a good place to start.
I am fully respectful of your right to try and force the community here to your expectations, but I wouldn't start holding my breath that everyone is just going to "Take it outside" if they get off on a tangent.
February 12, 2009 5:28 PM | Reply | Permalink
Jason, I'm not trying to 'force' anyone - as noted this is an option.
And do you believe that all here share and subscribe to your concept that 'Blogs are a conversation in a bar, not a group session on a single topic.'?
Evolvement of the central issue is good - petty back and forth (again, my opinion) detracts and distracts from the post (and intent of poster).
And just to be clear, because I have gone off topic in other's blogs too. I would appreciate the ability to refer to another space to continue (if so desired) without interfering with the poster's message.

As I said, you are free to try, I just wouldn't hold my breath unless I wanted to turn blue. I have yet to have a single blog that stayed on topic the whole way through. Most go right off track almost from word one.
If a blogger wants to manage the flow of the conversation, it takes effort and focus. Without at least one person trying to maintain a through-line, it is only natural that these conversations will go off on tangents.
Many of those tangents will be stupid. Some will be profound. I just don't see any point in getting worked up about it one way or the other.

An off-topic comment is not the same thing as a comment meant to detract from a post and snag it, like a log in a lake snags a fishing line.

So profound and what a visual. Thanks.

Yes, a blog is just like Starbucks. Great analogy. Sheesh. Written by Jason today on Bwak's blog in reply to me.
But now on the same day, we find that Blogs are a conversation in a bar.
It would probably serve no purpose whatsoever to point out to the author of these statements that they are examples of a persistent inconsistency and lack of self-awareness, that overlays a misplaced confidence in his abilities to reason and comprehend.
Because so far he exhibits no hesitancy in his rightness and centrist positions.

It used a highfalutin term for "blacks." Not a nasty term, but nevertheless uncalled for under the circumstances. The term would not offend, but the comment, given the term, was offensive.

Meta is so much fun. One explanation for consciousness is the capacity to model states, to hold a simulation. One neuro guy, D'Amasio, I think, found locations for a basic state-of-the-body model in the brain. Not so hard to imagine this happening for lots of questions. And now we have those "mirror neurons" which fire in empathy for others.
And the unconsidered life is thought not worth living, by some, so let's talk about it.
February 12, 2009 8:53 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'd argue with you, but my brain went to check out a broken simulation on floor 17, was returning to the bridge, but has fallen victim to an elevator breakdown, and is presently stuck between floors.
Help.
P.S. If it turns out to be sabotage, please look for a guy named Hal. Or maybe Des.

Spric or spriche or whatever the hell he calls himself just wrote this sentence at Hollenbecks blog
What these outlying residents fear is one of the inner city chimpouts spreading outward when genuine shortages make welfare checks and food stamps worthless.
I gave him until 8:05 cst to define the comment to my satisfaction or I am hitting the abuse button, writing a complaint and setting up a blog.

You just know he's the first guy you'll read about in the paper who blows the head off some poor person coming to his door asking for a little help or "trespassing on his land".
I have faith that "their God" will take these folks when it starts getting really bad. These are not the kind of people who adjust and survive hard times. And they're usually so full of themselves and hate for their fellow man, not to mention saturated fats, their hearts or their heads explode when the going gets tough.

Don't blame ya Dick. Point me to it and I'll second the motion. But I do think Spric, Renaye and even Jason are drawn here for reasons they themselves probably don't understand right now. And maybe it's my long dead relative Hugh Latimer's genes influence on me but I always think I can turn them, get them to see the light. That's why I knock on doors and phonebank for lack of a better word "religiously". I've found if you have your facts lined up, if you can counter the nonsense they hear on Mornin Joe or Limbaugh with easy to remember google phrases for them to factcheck you can turn 'em around.
