Tom DeLay is human, after all
I can proudly say I've never watched a reality TV show from start to finish (except the first three episodes of The Osbournes, which was probably the trailblazer for the industry). They bore me to tears. I am a writer, and anyone who says reality TV represents reality is deluding themselves more than Rush or Beck ever could. They are WRITTEN, they are edited carefully, they are STAGED, they are horseshit. Extra added bonus: They have no credited WRITER, just a producer, so that's one more person out of a job, carefully planned exclusion of a union member on the bottom of the totem pole to save money.
But my wife and daughter love "Dancing With The Stars". Sometimes when I'm online, I sit in the living room and watch it out of the corner of my eye. I'm just glad they have something non-violent and uncontroversial to bond over, truth be told.
But when they announced The Hammer would dance, the entire left blogosphere--including our most beneficent host here--went apeshit. Ever since he fell down the legal Memory Hole of indicted-but-not-yet-prosecuted, ever since he became an also-ran on FOX News and any pundit program he could claw his way onto, Tom DeLay has been a forgotten man on both sides of the aisle.
When I actually saw him dance, and especially his out-of-wind comments afterwards in response to the judges and the co-hostess's questions, I was floored by one thing--this man is humble. He was almost craven in his reaction to the judges' criticisms, eager to please and all ears.
Now, this is dangerous territory, humanizing a monster like Tom DeLay. But it's undeniable. He really IS human, and for all the awful legislation, politicking, career-destroying, demonizing, pontificating, partisan persecution, etc, on the basis of three episodes of this program, I'm ready to say:
Forgive him, liberals, for he knows not what he does. He's just a dumb fucking lump. He's a tool, just like George W. Bush, in the hands of powerful men.
He's also hit bottom, PR-wise, if he has to appear on this show, break BOTH feet, in order to get himself in the national limelight again.
