Why Spitzer--but not Ensign, Craig, Vitter, Sanford...?

When Eliot Spitzer was caught hiring hookers, I just shrugged. Oh, well, I guess he's not gonna run for President after all.

When I discussed it with my buddy, he said in no uncertain terms that Spitzer would resign. I vehemently disagreed. Why should he resign, when every Republican caught with his pants down in the last ten years has apologized, teared up, wet down a dozen microphones in front of him, and continued serving his term of office?

Why is it that the Democrats are the only ones who are hounded out of office in shame? While the hypocritical Republicans remain in office, thwarting the progressive agenda endlessly?

Of course, my buddy turned out to be right in his prediction, no matter how pissed off the double standard made me...

Granted, there were some extenuating circumstances in the Spitzer affair. He should have been investigating the call girl organization instead of patronizing it. He was an attorney general and was caught breaking the law.

Still, it seems like it's a one-way street when it comes to sex and politics. It's ALWAYS okay if you're a Republican, and I'm goddamned fucking sick and tired of that shit.

Bill Clinton didn't resign. Edwards didn't hold any office from which to resign.

Spitzer chose to resign, while the others did not. Spitzer and Vitter technically committed crimes. It isn't a crime to cheat on your wife unless you pick up a prostitute.

Well...you really eviscerated my points, one by one.

But...I didn't mention Edwards or Clinton because they didn't apply. But those senators do, and so did Spitzer.

He should have stayed. He should have fought it tooth and nail, just like the hypocritical Republicans do, if for only one reason:

One less Democrat in office weakens the nation. Especially when lying criminal Republicans refuse to leave office under NEARLY identical conditions of 'immorality'.

Spitzer believed he had been caught breaking a law for which he cld serve time. He didn't know when he resigned that the ct. order for the tap that had the evidence had expired when they caught him.

I think the other fellows don't believe they broke a law.

The best was Larry Craig's resignation fake-out. Declaring your intention to resign once the news breaks, and then pulling back when things simmer down.

I don't recall signing up for the Hypocritical Republican of the Month Club, but they keep coming. If the GOP had any of the morality they hype about family, truth and decency, they wouldn't encourage their indescrete members to dance the hang dog boogie and then stay in office. Also being a proven rotten repub doesn't change much. They retain their offices and the party keeps their vote. In the short term it helps a desperate political party survive. Some how they have to balance that against transparty gains to the Dems. In the long term, Americans forget stuff and history can be rewritten.
A special approval goes out to Mrs. Sanford for not attending his apology fest.

Two things stand out for me in this comment. 'the hang dog boogie', and the party keeps their vote.

Bingo, ditto. The party keeps their vote. And if you think they 'learned their lesson', just take a look at a more private moment at a fundraiser with one of these disgraces assholes, with good Christians all slapping them on the back, telling them to 'hang in there', with their instant forgiveness because they feel the same way about Muslims, darkies and Democrats.

Shorter my last two posts: IOKIYAR. That's all I needed to write.
