Excellent point and it's duly noted on my side that this puts a serious hole in the position I was advocating yesterday. My argument only holds if there's a reasonable likelihood of the Dems being able to carry out the threat of removing the chairmanship for Traitor Joe not playing ball. If that's not the case then I agree wholeheartedly with you that they should simply do so now.

The goal isn't to get rid of Traitor Joe, it's to USE him to your advantage. He can be a useful tool to be wielded at the right times. Now that you have him by the balls, you can squeeze when necessary and the rat will do as you please. A republican replacement (no matter how moderate) won't be nearly as pliable.

Remember, Traitor Joe can't get any useful power by defecting to the Repubs. In order to get or keep what he wants he needs the Dems. That means they can get what they want from him in return.

I think the key point here is simply a matter of competence. It's been sorely lacking in most areas of this administration and if it exists in such a vital one then let's keep it.
Additionally, this underscores that real grown-ups will always put country first unlike those juveniles who were just spouting off to score political points during the campaign.
Remember, best and brightest doesn't come from just one party, one ideology, one ethnicity or one ANYTHING!
I too would have no qualms about keeping Gates in the new administration. He has certainly struck me as a serious, thoughtful and honest person in his current role. Not a political hack towing the party or company (DOD) line. President-elect Obama could do a lot worse and he's definitely someone who could work well within a new administration.
