Obama to add Richardson as Commerce Secretary for All-Star Cabinet

Haven't seen this anywhere else:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama is expected to nominate New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to head the Commerce Department, a senior Democratic source said on Tuesday.

Obama is expected to announce the appointment during a news conference scheduled for 1140 EST/1640 GMT on Wednesday in Chicago, his fifth since he began naming nominees for his Cabinet.

The appointment of Richardson, a former U.N. ambassador and energy secretary who became an Obama supporter earlier this year after dropping his own presidential bid, would make him the first Hispanic named to Obama's rapidly filling Cabinet.

Would've preferred him at State, still, he's a capable guy and a welcome addition.

Yeah, I was hoping for him at State as well. I do think that he will be great as Commerce Secretary, though, since I guess he'll be dealing with NAFTA, and has the experience of being Governor of a state bordering Mexico.

I think that if Obama wanted Hillary in his cabinet, State was the only position she would accept. The choice really doesn't bother me, and I think she has the conections and experience to be more effective than Richardson would have been.

What other Democratic presidential candidates do you think will end up in Obama's cabinet? He's already cherry-picked waht I see as the top three (Biden, Clinton, and Richardson). Dodd? Kucinich? I can't even remember who the others were at this point.

Me too but I can see how his diplomatic skills can also be of value with global commerce, especially since the economic struggles are now global in dimension. This could be very tough job over the next four years.

I just hope that someone markets a deck of trading cards. And that Obama gets to be a special "rookie" card.

I posted this a while ago:

I still think putting Richardson in at Commerce is a case of square peg, round hole (or vice versa).

From Wikipedia:

The mission of the department is to "promote job creation and improved living standards for all Americans by creating an infrastructure that promotes economic growth, technological competitiveness, and sustainable development." Among its tasks are gathering economic and demographic data for business and government decision-making, issuing patents and trademarks, and helping to set industrial standards.

Since Obama is talking big on infrastructure, sounds like Richardson will be in a key position. Commerce also includes the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). Maybe we will be hearing a bit more about this agency in the future?

sad reward for Richardson who helped Obama much more then hillary did to win the election.

i guess you have to be evil towards Obama to get his attention and thanks.

lieberman,hillary..are LOL today.

I doubt that Richardson would give up his governorship for this if it wasn't something he wanted. Obama has big plans for domestic policy, and this will be a highly influential position for Richardson to occupy.

I definitely agree that it's something he wants. He's two years into his last allowable term as Governor, and the state's Congressional offices are now out of reach for the foreseeable future (Bingman's only 65, young for a senior Senator, and we actually have an all-Democratic Congressional delegation for the first time in recent history, certainly since we've had three Representatives in the House). This is a good way for him to get more national government experience in preparation for another run at the presidency.

I just stumbled across the listing for his most recent book, and I'm gonna try and get a copy over the holiday break, so that I can be more informed about the policies he's likely going to push for as SoC.

I'll look forward to hearing about his book. Thanks for weighing in.

Jade, stop taking the barbituates, they're going to kill you. At least not with Jack Daniels. When you can't see straight, it's a sign something's wrong.

Richardson strikes me as a loyal, hard-working, humble guy. Very impressive. He may wear very well with longevity. He has so many talents, so much experience.

Thanks, astral!

I don't think too many New Mexicans would consider him all that humble. It's known that he can play power politics with the best. But he does have the ol' vision thing going on: alternative energy, single-payer health care, even space development - all things appropriate for a SoC to seriously consider.

user-pic

oh well,.......and so it goes......best of luck to you bill R.....

user-pic

I hear he took the job with the belief he will move up in the future. I think sometime during O's second term he will be SecState.

user-pic

I just think that Richardson sees the opportunity to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime historical event. He could ride out his last two years of governor, and then what? Term limits prevent him from running again, and there is no higher office to run for in 2010. With Obama's promise, who wouldn't want to be part of the "dream team"? No doubt Richardson sees the chance to really hel[p lead the US forward, and to help repair the damage of the past 8 years, or 28, if you look back to the beginning of the Reagan era of deregulation.
