Morning Joe Gets Schooled by Zbigniew Brzezinski on Powell/Obama Endorsement

This is a must-see clip, wherein Mika has her father, Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski, on Morning Joe to discuss the Powell endorsement of Obama. It is so refreshing to hear another smart, experienced, elder statesman weigh in on why Obama is the vastly preferred candidate:

Just call him "Zbig the Scar Slayer." Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski just destroyed Joe Scarborough on his own show and left him speechless and lying bloody on the ground. Scarborough had been ranting and raving for most of the previous segment with Pat Buchanan, belittling the Powell endorsement because of the Iraq War of all things and beating up Obama's Press guy, Robert Gibbs (again) ad nauseum about how Obama had lied and broken his word on public financing and how they were buying the election and how Sarah Palin with all her years as Mayor of Wasilla (please!) and Governor was more qualified to be President than Barack Obama and he was nothing more than a Community Organizer, and a State legislator with one year in the Senate and blah, blah, blah.

A few minutes before they went to the break, Mika announced that Lawrence O'Donnell had arrived in the studio, so that was a good sign. But when I saw the 80 year-old Dr. Brzezinski   pull himself up onto that stage, I knew Joe was in for all he could handle and more. Of course I wasn't disappointed. When Joe was stupid enough to ask about the lack of experience of Barack Obama, Brzezinski countered beautifully, making the intellectual argument for Barack Obama sound like lyric poetry. He made the case for Barack's intellect, temperament and good judgment over the unpredictable volatility of John McCain. (I'll have the video as soon as it's available.)

Brzezinski points out that Powell's endorsement shows that Obama's administration will be a bi-partisan administration, as it must be. He says one has only to look at what Obama has accomplished in this historic campaign and the millions of people he has inspired at this time in history when our nation is mired in this deep and dangerous crisis.  He is a transformative figure. Besides, look at the guys who made the worst foreign policy decisions in our lifetimes, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney. They had thirty years of "foreign policy experience." Look what they got us into. Give me Barack Obama's wisdom any day.

If there is one video clip you take time out for today, the wisdom of Brzezinski should be it.

Excellent referral...I'd written off Morning Joe because he sounds too much like faux news, but I'm going to start recording it. rec'd

There is such a marked contrast in the quality of dialogue between the proponents of Obama and those who jabber on behalf of the McCain campaign. I am so not used to hearing smart people speak on the MSM programs that hear Zbignew speak so well was a shock.

user-pic

agreed!

Try to watch when Scarborough's on vacation; it's awesome when he's not around....

user-pic

I sensed a turning point when McCain was on a few weeks ago and accused Mika of being in the tank for Obama - I think it pushed her into actually being for Obama... she wasn't previously.

user-pic

That was awesome.

Brerzezinski put his reasoning into a clear and powerful manner.

Just watched the clip... Wow.

GRAVITAS!! Dr. Brzezinski rules. [Scarborough looked like a first class chump. And Mika? She's the hottest.]

"We are in deep, deep trouble. Domestically and internationally. It needs a grand renewal." --Brzezinski

hot dog! intelligence incarnate-yeah that's what obama/biden represents...not ignorance, bigotry and narrow tunnel vision for america! loved the clip...thank you so much for sharing....

Joe's arguments are always smaller than the topic requires. He's not a big thinker. And I don't hold that against him. What I don't like is that he thinks he is.

user-pic

bingo!

user-pic

Yep. Nailed it.

Mika can't get a coherent sentence in edgewise! It's very annoying when she and Joe host the show. She needs more backbone like her dad. Also she loves Sarah Palin! pfft!

user-pic

Okay, sure, but Z-Big besting Scarborough intellectually is like Mike Tyson pummeling Steve Urkle.

While it's good to have statesmen on television, this was MSNBC with his daughter for godsakes! I would like to see him on Fox, where there isn't so much preaching to the choir.

I mostly want to see him on Fox because we would all learn how better to deal with that kind of dumb interview that Fox is good at (e.g. O'Reilly/Obama).

I do wish, however, that the day after the rec, we didn't hear that Powell would be part of an Obama White House. Looks way too tit-for-tat, even those naive in politics can see it!

Powell's intelligent choice demonstrates why we respect him.

But I think he is trying to salvage his tarnished name and maybe even angle for a pardon one day.

Awesome clip.

Whatever small amount of good will I had toward Joe evaporated this year. The guy has such a hard-on for Obama's supposed lack of experience that he is just a caricature now - of a parrot, not a journalist.

As to "preaching to the choir" being an adequate description for the clip I watched, I have to disagree. There is no choir. There is no preaching. There is simply a message of truth that must be stated over and over again to a People fed Propaganda instead of real information - we are in deep shit and Barack Obama has the intelligence and the temperament to help us dig out.

There isn't a single thing he would have said differently on Fox than he said on MSNBC or to his daughter or to you, face-to-face on the street. This mythical idea that no statement of truth is good enough unless they are getting "grilled" by someone simply contributes to the notion that the Circus is Life.

Brzezinski made a very common sense argument that Joe's audience (probably more than a few Fox viewers as well) is going to get. He barely even broke a sweat. Fox would have been equally light in the challenge department.

This information is viral now and any Fox viewer who could be convinced by seeing it on Fox won't be less convinced for having seen it on MSNBC or via the web.

That wasn't my point, JEM. My point was not what would he say, but how would he say it. If you are getting interrupted every 2 seconds, what riposte would be used to make the interviewer look foolish?

Packaging is important. At least that's what everyone keeps telling me on TPM where I hear time and again how people aren't rational and go with their emotions.

user-pic

I thought he got the same sort of treatment in this interview and he pretty much talked right through it.

Great clip! Thanks for posting the link.

user-pic

That was a great clip. I think that should be required viewing for undecideds. I really liked the grace with which he handled the questioners. He was very eloquent and gracious in his responses to them.

Scarborough is babbling in high gear these days, knowing as he does that his franchise is up when the election is over -- he's going to be relegated to the distant outskirts of serious discussion -- or even further out -- and he knows it. He's probably signed up already to study for his real estate license...

user-pic

Brzezinski is so eloquent and always argues from observable data rather than fuzzy ideals and jargon.

People like to call Kissinger a realist, but as Robert Dallek reveals, he's more of a starfucking dilettante. Brzezinski is the real deal.

user-pic

I have always admired Brzezinski, since I took a course taught jointly by him and Henry Kissinger at Harvard in the fifties. As is obvious, Brzezinski was and is the superior mind of the two, although, even in those remote times, Kissinger was the gaudier showman and funnier lecturer.

But if I had to ask someone to write me a foreign policy brief, it would certainly be Brzezinski who remains sharp to this day, and not Kissinger, whose intellectual powers appear to have slipped rapidly with time.

user-pic

Thanks for making my morning, damn, my whole day, with that clip.

I'm really sick of this Colin Powell's endorsement was for anything other than the most promising candidate BS. These people really do get their talking points from a single source don't they. Why else would so many people say such crazy nonsense.
