Bug Fixes: Round 1

More good news today. We have just deployed the first of two rounds of bug fixes. We're kicking off a global rebuild of the site, so these fixes will gradually start showing up for all users over the next day or so.

The fixes:
  • Replies: You will now get updates in your dashboard when someone who you are not following replies to one of your comments on your blog
  • Comments and Recs pages on your blog should now instantly update
  • The YOUR BLOG link in the top nav bar will now work if you have a two word username.
We're also going to roll out another set of bug fixes next week, and I'll talk more about them then.

Comments and Recs pages on your blog should now instantly update

I'm very happy if that is truly the case, if you mean that you mean everyone's comments everywhere update on their home page immediately, since I have always been less interested in looking at blog entries or replies on my own blog entries, than I am in looking at what comments interesting members have been making. It's been very frustrating without that function working--example: I'd want to check what Ellen's been saying and what posts she's been participating on, and I'd go to her page and find only her comments from weeks ago, because she rarely posts blogs. If I wasn't online when she was, the dsshboard was of little help in that regard. Without it, one tends to still get stuck in "most popular" news of the day and that quickly gets boring.

I think your new job description, myTPM Evangelist is not reality-based, it presumes there is only one way, truth and the light, and that people will "see" that if you only explain it well enough, and I predict you are going to experience much frustration in that regard. :-)

user-pic

It's not working for me yet.

My comments on this post and my recommend of it and my comements on your other post and on the David Seaton post have not posted to my comments on my page. There's nothing updated on my page since 12:47pm today, and that one has the wrong time stamp on my page, the aggregator instead took the timestamp of my original blog post (which I was replying to,) which has been the case previously.

user-pic

Did you read my post?

these fixes will gradually start showing up for all users over the next day or so

Though I am personally rebuilding your blog by hand now, so you can have the fixes first.

user-pic

So it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel. *Sigh*

user-pic

Ok, I bow out of the running for the chairmanship of the TPMCafe Software Whiner's club, for now. :-)

user-pic

Oh sure. Now you resign. After Al totally personally rebuilt your blog and everything.

user-pic

Wow, you guys are really on this. Thanks a million.

user-pic

Guess I am being rebuilt? Can't see anything on my dashboard, but I can get to my blog through the front door. Now, about those archives that miss the recent stuff...

user-pic

Al ! It WORKS! Just like you said! The YOUR BLOG works, comments and rec's updated.....SMOKIN'!

You are the DOMINATOR!!

Seriously, thanks for the work, guy. Now if only we could come up with good stuff to blog about, eh? Got any ideas? ;-)

user-pic

Al,

I am still in limbo. I have sent two emails to help@talkingpointsmemo.com with no response. I have no blog options available to me, though I can log in and post comments. My comments don't show in my dashboard, though my recommends do. Other issues contained in my email, and I won't take up more space here.

user-pic

Okay, except the history of my recommends just disappeared. Oh, well.

user-pic

Test comment.

user-pic

Another test comment.

user-pic

And another.

user-pic

hi

user-pic

hey kevin!

major props for outwitting the spam catcher

user-pic

I am feeling so sorry for myself! Perhaps its because my user name has 3 words.

I cannot follow anyone anymore -the little thing spins around but then it reverts to "follow me"

I click on "your blog" or my name and it tells me I haven't started a blog yet and "Lux Umbra Dei is not following anyone" I can only get to my blog by a roundabout process.

Most of the time my dashboard will show nothing but my recommends, not the comments of the people I am trying to follow.

Still, these features are all essentially luxuries and TPM is still eminently usable even for poor little end-users like myself stubbornly clinging to our system-toxic user names!

user-pic

Lux, have you tried signing out and signing in again after the changes Al started rolling out a couple of hours ago?

user-pic

No not yet. I'm on it.....

user-pic

It works! It works! A miracle! A miracle!!!!

[inarticulate joyful sounds-mixed with deranged laughter]

I will follow Al Shaw and you too Kevin, forever and ever!!!

user-pic

It seems as though every time I try to thank someone at world tpm headquarters, a wheel and maybe a door and a bumper fall off in short order and either the fixed problem is no longer fixed or else a fresh and exciting new bunch of problems emerge.

(Thank you)

user-pic

Thanks TPMers.

user-pic

Al, thanks for keeping up on this.

Alas, I've got a teeny problem - I seem to have disappeared - blog posts gone, comments gone, recs gone, and avatar gone when I click "Your Blog." Says I've not started my blog yet.

Dash working good though, and really cool feature - my dash currently is telling me someone is going to be following someone else "3 hours from now." That's awesome. :)

user-pic

My stuff keeps disappearing. Sometimes my blog is there. Sometimes it disappears. If I clear my cache and log-in again, it doesn't help. It really seems to be an authentication issue. That has seemed to be an issue from day one with this software as well.

user-pic

The problem I keep on encountering is that your system appears to be case-sensitive. From some pages, the 'your blog' link takes me to (.../talk/blogs/FlyOnTneWall) which says "This user has not started their blog yet!" On other pages, the 'your blog' link takes me to (.../talk/blogs/flyontnewall) which works perfectly well. I've tested this by manually entering both versions, and it's clear that the correctly capitalized page doesn't exist, but the all-lower-case page works fine. I wonder if some of the other users reporting bugs aren't encountering something similar.

user-pic

Wow! I can confirm this. Under megankent (lowercase) there are some older recommends (still no comments or opportunity to post a blog). Under MeganKent I found my newer (including today) recommends.

Good catch, Fly!

BTW, Al, is there a reason this post isn't linked under House Brew? Doesn't it qualify as housekeeping?

user-pic

And just another weirdness for fun's sake. Under the lowercase megankent on the My Blog page, the comments and recommends tabs show up as separate URLs (....megankent/comments.php and ...megankent/recommends.php). Under mixed case MeganKent, they perform as java tabs.

I'm guessing that this is a version-control issue. One userid is going to the older system, and one is mapping to the newer system. Obviously, somehow it needs to be resolved.

I tried logging in with initial caps, and even changing my "show name" on my profile to initial caps. This doesn't seem to have had any effect.

user-pic

Al, I can no longer access my own blog by clicking on "blog" or my name at the top - as used to happen. However, if I comment and then click on my name after the comment, I can get to my blog.

So, not sure what's going on. (I did delete some duplicate blogs over the weekend... so not sure if the system has burped or something, due to that.)

It's not a huge problem, of course, since I can also get there via the blog now and clicking on entries. But I'm used to the convenience of just clicking where it says (above) "your blog." If I do that, it tells me I haven't yet started my blog!

user-pic

Thanks everyone for the bug reports. I'm discussing these issues with our developers and we'll be addressing very soon.

user-pic

More bug kvetching from Sunday here: "tpm bug check" by Jason Miller. Only if you want it, I would never dream of forcing it on you. :-)

user-pic

p.s. I really love having the replies to my comments come up on the dashboard, it's like old times, and I'm pretty sure lots of your users are going to be thrilled with that function once they realize that it is there. Good job adding that, you won't be sorry.

[sarcasm] Now if youc can just do a miracle, get about a gazillion more servers so you can have the dashboard give a continuous archive, so people can have discussions stretching over weeks, then the functionality of this site will be back to the stage of the Scoop software that it started with and there will be no members in the Whiners' Club.{/sarcasm]

user-pic

i see JEM's post and thread, and have forwarded it to our developers. investigating these issues.

user-pic

Just another weirdness (and I hope I'm not repeating myself). I am unable to follow anyone. That is, here on your blog, while I'm logged in, I click "Follow Me." As I understand it, the button should then change to read "Following" and you should show up on my blog page as someone I'm following. Instead, when I click "Follow Me" I get a progress circle for a couple of seconds, then the button reappears as "Follow Me." My block still shows following: 0.

Also, I have now tried on a PC, using both IE7 and Firefox 3.0.4, so the problems are not a product of my Mac.

user-pic

Apparently you still have the problem for new members who sign up with user names having two words using a space.

User "william ockham" just posted
here on Barton Gellman's thread.
When one clicks on his name, you get this url
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/william_ockham

which gives you a Movable Type error page.

If you insert a %20 in his url instead of the underline for the space, you get a normal-looking user page.

Once you correct the url, though, it is my experience that is impossible to add these people to one's "following" list, seems like they may be in a sort of limbo between wrong urls and correct urls?

Am reporting this only because I enjoy seeing comments from new members, especially the type inspired to sign up to comment on a contributor post. Hate to see them discouraged from coming back.

user-pic

Same problem with new user "midnight rambler" commenting here on Nathan Newman's thread.

user-pic

Here's a minor little flaw. When I break my posts in two, using the "extended" tab, the hyperlinks in the second half of the post display as colored and underlined text, whereas in the first half the hyperlinks are simply colored.

user-pic

One more small bug. If you click through to any of the permalinked comments on the main TPM page, you get a page that displays only that individual comment. If you click the "Your Blog" link on that page, it transfers you to: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.comtalk/blogs/username. It's missing a back-slash in the middle there.

user-pic

are you copying in from Microsoft Word? It might be adding in errant code.

user-pic

No, the posts are fully composed in the window provided, using the rich text editor (and Textile, as necessary). I do, however, write the whole thing in the main window, then decide where to cut it, and paste the second half into the extended window. I'm not sure that would matter, but there it is.

user-pic

Let me amend that. Here's what's happening. If I'm using the Rich Text editor, and I copy and paste what I've written from the main window into the extended screen, it alters the hyperlinks by inserting [style="text-decoration: underline; "] into the code. I've figured out a work-around; if I cut and paste while using Textile or one of the other functions, it simply copies the text as is. It's not a big deal, but it is a little weird and a little irritating, and I just thought I'd mention it.
