Absolutely ducky, thanks for asking.

And yourself?

user-pic

Think the new system is working out well.

It would be nice if the right-hand of the blogs could list the recommended and most recent posts. That way, don't have to go back and click TPM Cafe to get that. Not a show stopper, just a nice feature.

BTW, is the Cafe Dude icon now the default avatar for anyone who doesn't actively choose an avatar?

user-pic

PS - That whole Following/Followers thing is kind of creepy. Following makes me think stalkers; followers make me think cult.

Anyway it could be changed to Reading & Readers?

user-pic

Or, failing change of nomenclature, perhaps you could utilize a Jason (think: Friday the 13th) icon to denote stalker/stalkees??

Or, mayhaps simply a pic of that creepy psycho-dude from Accounting.

user-pic

how about this.. we keep it 'following' and you interpret as you wish.

user-pic

Wow. A cyber-bitchslap.

Thanks, I guess.

ps: I've found it better, in my experience, not to seek feedback if I am of systemic propensity to not be receptive to same.

user-pic

was joking. My point was that it's about not what it's called, but what it does -- which is pretty cool. no bitchslap intended.

user-pic

Indeed, it is way cool. And thanks for the clarification. I'd hoped I got that wrong.

I only co-signed with the original statement because I've read several members express adamant refusal to name anybody to their own 'follows' list, citing their desire to, a) not be a follower. Period. b) desirous of maintaining the "so-and-so does not follow anybody" tag in their profile.

Remember: we are talking about obstinate, intelligent liberals here. As a societal subset, we are as prone to being as batshit crazy as the toothless freepers down the hall - albeit in our own unique & classy way.

And one of them happens to be my fiancee. Imagine my angst to learn that said member will not follow me. Then try and imagine my alcohol expenditures as to cope with the travesty. ;-)

user-pic

haha. Funny how people get hung up on semantics instead of seeing the bigger picture

user-pic

The bigger picture seems to be that the general feeling reflects the term 'follow' is not popular. Simple enough. Changing the terminology will not change the purpose of the feature.

user-pic

Save some money, check again. ;)

user-pic

ok, Missy... you so completely rock!

Thanks a bunch, Al, for floating this topic. By the by, see why I love this woman so?? ;-)

Can TPM put match.com out of business??

user-pic

Who needs that match whatever. I've got you.

I'm quite serious about the 'follow' thing. It bothers me.

user-pic

Still having problems w/ my dashboard. The "Recommend" tab is the only one working. "Posts" and "comments" are empty.

Also at least 2 comments today went out into the ether w/o ever showing up.

Thanks for keeping tabs on us! Appreciate your help!

user-pic

it looks like you're not following anyone! follow some people and your dashboard will fill out.

user-pic

Increasinlgy frustrated with the inability to see people's recent comments, including my own. Keep visiting pages of people after seeing they have commented somewhere, finding their comments not updated either. (For example, bslev still has no comments on his list, I know he commented recently because I caught it on the dashboard. And I know Resistance has posted comments that are not on his list.) Hoping the fix is coming soon, being patient.

Before the update, I used to use my own version of tracking to surf the site (used the address bar memory to look at people's profile pages, see what they were commenting on.) Now I can't even get that.

Oh and I tried to submit earlier today a comment with three urls (it was to help another user, to refer to staff posts about, yeah, missing comments) and instead of a confirmation, I kept getting the message that it was being held for management approval, and I finally figured out that you must have a spam filter for too many links in a comment. If you do, can you post that in instructions, what it is, how many links are allowe in a comment?

But hey, I must shout this: THANKS FOR THREADS LIKE THIS. Believe me, I was present at and an active commenter on 2 other software changes here, and helped other users with tips on the original 3rd system, since I had experience at it, and there has never been anything near this level of "customer service" here or even customer care, it's very refreshing to finally see this site paying a lot of attention to its users. Don't get me wrong, I realize the past was about staffing priorities, but after a while it gets tiresome to be dealing with "there's no one in charge here" syndrome, having to develop workarounds with other users for problems. I've been through it on other sites before I came here, and it gets tiring to realize you are being used as a volunteer workforce when you're already a customer by creating content and traffic. Maybe it was fine in the old early days of ebay, but things change. :-)

user-pic

Al, please see the update I made to my link above as a reply.

user-pic

I looked at the link and the associated thread, and am investigating. Thanks.

user-pic

I think the new improvements are great, especially the ability to EDIT! Why, M. J. has been able to change the title of his post six times today already.

Two minor complaints:

In the post writing box, it's near impossible to get the cursor activated if you navigate away from it to link, cut'n'paste or whatever.

The "William Penn" anonymous icon kind of sucks. Some reader comment threads like like and Ivory/Merchant production, and it tends to make all of the comments look like they are coming from a single commenter. The old silhouette didn't create this impression, for some reason.

Thanks!

user-pic

As long as this comment goes through, I think I'm fine. I made one earlier, at a post, and got an error message (I should've saved it).

I'm happy with the changes so far and am hopeful the little glitches will iron themselves out.

And I agree with artappraiser, it's great to see you guys actively talking with us, asking us for input like this. Thank you!

user-pic

Al,

If I'm understanding artappraiser's comment, I echo it: There seems to be a lag time for when my comments and recommends post to My Blog. That lag time is a couple of days. Don't know if you've addressed this elsewhere, but is that something that will speed up (at least to same-day posting), or is it a delay that's just affecting a few accounts? Thanks.

user-pic

I am finding a huge lag time on many users comments' lists, like 8, 12 hours or more. I bounce back and forth between seeing someone's comment on a thread, or on my dashboard, and checking their comments lists, that's how I've seen the evidence

(Just so people know I'm not some kind of tech police nut, let me say that I happen to be doing that, as always, in order to surf for interesting threads, not to check on the system.)

Current, my own comments list was last updated with those 10:58 pm last night sometime while I slept (weren't there when I came back around midnight) and a comment I made at 11:06am today hasn't been added to my list so far as I write this at 11:49 am.

User American Dreamer put a new complaint last night, further evidence, on my blog post

I haven't had any comments show up on my comments since two short initial ones I put up five hours after Al's thread "To Use the EXTENDED tab is a virtue", started at 12:35 pm on 10/13.

Don't know about others, but it really takes a lot of the fun out of it for me, because you can't easily interact unless the users are on your dashboard and you happen to be on your dashboard to catch it in time before it scrolls away. If it scrolls away, you may miss a reply because it's not on their list yet when you check several hours later.

(You know, it's interesting that before the update, in my experience comments, and blog posts, would load to people's lists before they posted to the thread. I'd see people complaining that their comment was "lost," when actually there was just a delay, I saw it happen a lot with my own comments. We didn't have preview then, I'd see a mistake on a just sent comment on my list, go to the thread to put a correction addenda reply, and the comment wouldn't be there yet!)

user-pic

Fun? I feel like a lab rat in a maze. That may sound harsh, but I spend most of my time getting where I don't want to go instead of getting where I do want to go. Yes, I appreciate the new features (at least the ones I know about), but I haven't yet found the shortcuts to the little lab-rat treats at all the exits. ;-)

user-pic

I'm still not following anyone, but my tabs are now working...thank you.

I, too, have issues about the "following" thing. I like the concept, in that it makes it easy to get to the page for a person you want to read regularly, except that it shouldn't be visible to anyone else.

user-pic

Well, THAT was meant for Al upstream! But as long as I'm here, how are you, Blow? Nice avatar!

user-pic

Hi still! I'm pretty good, if lost most of the time. You?

Thanks re the pic. I'm on the fence about keeping it, but since I don't know how to change it to something else, it won't be changing anytime soon. ;-)

user-pic

I'm doin' good. Love being here! I've made lots of friends and have learned a lot since back in July when you showed me the ropes! Thanks again! You remind me of my senior english teacher who worked me hard, but made me a much better writer than I had been before...I'll never forget her, and I don't think I'll ever forget you!

user-pic

Al, now my tabs are down again...Are you telling me you can't use the comment or post tabs unless you are following people...That's illogical!

user-pic

the tabs on your own blog seem to be fine. yes, you can only use the tabs on your dashboard if you are following people -- those tabs aggregate information about the people you follow.

user-pic

Duh.....thanks!
