Regarding Non-Updating Recommended Pages and Other Issues

In a thread on a previous entry, people have mentioned a problem with their recommend page on their blogs not updating. Let me explain this. Better to do here, than in a comment which will soon be buried. Like many pages on the site, the recommends tab needs to be republished periodically. It is a static page that doesn't reflect immediate changes, but is republished in response to certain triggers. It is not random, and there isn't a "lag" on its updating. If one of these "triggers" isn't set off, the page won't update, and you're stuck with old comments. We're looking into optimizing the republishing of these pages so they will reflect the most recent information.

We have been working on a number of bug fixes and tweaks in the last day. We have fixed:
  • A login issue with some versions of Safari that would automatically kick you to a login page if you're visiting the homepage
  • A bug that would only show you information in your dashboard from the 20 people you most recently followed
  • A bug with the All Reader Posts not updating in a timely manner
We're looking into a number of other issues, and I'm thrilled that our readers are loving and using the new tools. As always, I'm interested in hearing your comments.

TPM is ALL OVER the debate

Three staffers liveblogging, a TPMCafe open thread, and tons of readerbloggers pumping through myTPM. Love it!

How are you guys doing?

They're back. Enjoy! For the time being, to see older Cafe Reader archives, check the archives of the individual users blogs.

Gaming the System

Hey everyone,

You may have noticed that a post by thecleverbulldog has been at the top of the All Reader Posts page for a while. This is because he backdated the post until tonight at 9:59 p.m. In other words, in order to stay the most "current" post, he set the publish date to the future in order to stay the newest all day.

I have unpublished the post, but in the future, we will delete posts who take advantage of the new date-manipulation privileges. Please don't abuse these new features, or your posts will be deleted, and you will be banned from the site.

This may have been a careless mistake on the part of thecleverbulldog, so they can republish the post with the correct timestamp if they wish. But in the future, we will be deleting these posts when we see them

Thanks, Al

Rec Lists Should be Fixed Now

Thanks everyone who has pointed out the problems with most recommended lists. They should be fixed. Let me know if you're still seeing problems, and I'll address ASAP. Note: for best results, select ONE category when you post, and it should show up both on the master rec list on cafe, and the rec list on the page you categorized it. I'm still testing whether uncategorized posts will show up anywhere, but for now I suggest picking a category. Thanks!

Edit 12:44 p.m. EDT: All rec lists really are fixed now. Thanks for all the feedback!

Hints

In case it hasn't shown up in your dashboard yet, TheraP has a post up with some good hints for using the new system.

Debate Prep

While we're gearing up for the next debate, how about a review..er.. revue of what we've seen so far. Hit the jump.

Community Tools Status

Hey everyone,

We're getting a lot of email and comments asking what's going on. I'll try to explain:

We're still in the midst of upgrading our software. While we sort some of these issues out, we have temporarily disabled recommending, the dashboard and following functionality. These features will be back shortly.

Many of you have written in about having trouble logging in. YOU do not have to create a new account-- your old account is still here. If you can't log in, clear your cache and cookies, and try again. We're looking into permissions problems on log in. If you can't log in at all, let us know, and we'll reset it manually.

I'll be answering questions in the comments thread. If you get a specific error message or run into anything unexpected, let me know.

To Use The EXTENDED tab is a virtue

TIP: If you're going to write really long posts, put the first couple paragraphs in body, then click the Extended tab right above the text box and put the rest of your text there. This will create a "Read More" link, so people can click through to read the whole post. Then you're not clogging up the whole Reader Blog page.

Is the right side of your blog blank?

If you're not seeing the sidebar on your blog, click the edit your profile link from the top nav bar. After you save, your sidebar should show up, and people can start following you! I'll be answering questions about the new system in comments.

Hello, World

This is a test entry, but also a welcome to everyone to myTPM. Enjoy!
