The site's commenting is not working

I just got this message trying to submit a comment to a Reader Blog:

Comment Submission Error
Your comment submission failed for the following reasons:

Invalid request
Return to the original entry.

I tried it twice, on a recently published blog with 3 comments already on it.. Then I tried to comment on one of my own older blogs and got the same message. Both comments I tried did not have links in them, and only one had code, for italics.  I was logged in while submitting each comment.

Update added as an edit: New problem: in attempting to comment on this post, I get the "timed out" pop-up message upon hitting "submit," which logs me out and leaves me without buttons under the comment box. Logging back in and returning fresh to the post with a box with buttons, the same thing happens, I am timed out again.

Update 12/31: I haven't had any trouble publishing comments so far this morning.

But see pseudocyants' report for adminstrators in his comment to this post on screwed-up urls he has discovered.

Second update 12/31:

Al Shaw: Thanks for reporting in with your comment on the thread.

I am not sure everything is fixed, proof is that I tried to post a reply to your comment many, many times to no avail over more than an hour, I got the timed-out pop-up over and over again, had to leave the thread, come back, and keep trying that way. I am giving up on publishing it and posting it here instead. I stay logged in, but cannot comment on this thread, I even tried to log out, that didn't work, it wouldn't let me. It says I am logged in, but then I get the pop-up message that my session is expired. Disconnecting from the internet and reconnecting didn't help. With previous comments this morning, I had no problem, but I sure had a problem trying to reply to yours. It's too much even for an addict like me--going elsewhere, will try the site again later, others may give up a lot quicker. I refuse to clear my cache just to use the site right now, would prefer to wait to see if things rectify themselves, as it will screw up too many other things for me.

A suggestion: consider making an announcement in the future on the main page when doing work? The fear of the unknown and all, rioting in the streets resulting, ya know. :-) Without an announcement, sometimes makes people think there is something wrong with their computer, and they spend a lot of time spinning wheels checking it out.

Third update, 12/31, 11:28am ET: Both commenting problems are still occuring. I just tried to publish a comment on Al Shaw's most recent "My Blog" post, in order to alert him to my updates because I couldn't post a comment on my own blog. On his blog, when submitting I got the Comment Submission Error/Invalid request  message. See y'all later after the gremlins have left.

there might be some sort of database problem. Many of the blog post links from the TPM Cafe home page return:

The file you are looking for has not been found

user-pic

So I just discovered after commenting on your previous post. Funny how it only seems to happen when I forget to copy my text before submitting.

user-pic

test... I have been locked out for about 6 hours.

btw, the Recommended links seem to have been fixed. They used to have a double directory problem.

user-pic

but I still cannot reply in another thread. ??

Attention Site Admin

There is a problem with some of TPM Cafe's dynamic URLs. They are invalid pointers.

Example:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/jpieterick/blogs/jpieterick/2008/12/barney-fife-shares-expertise-o.php

When the proper pointer is:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/jpieterick/2008/12/barney-fife-shares-expertise-o.php

Note that
/blogs/{userName}
is duplicated

This has occurred on different pages. Earlier, it was from TPMCafe Home page, as well as from links to comments on my blog page. Presently, it looks as if the home page is not created invalid URL's. (for me at least)

I saw on my dashboard that earlier yesterday, Al Shaw made two apparent test posts in Latin to this new page:

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/dcblog/

which probably has to do with the new blogger/reporters announced by Josh Marshall to be working from DC. I was thinking that some other tech things being done associated with that may have something to do with things going wacky temporarily for users?

Testing to see if I can publish a comment now on this thread, because I was just able to publish one on my blog post previous to this one.

Hi Artappraiser, We were doing some work on the site last night. All should be fixed now.. sorry for the interruption.

user-pic

well I am going to try again. Huge delay half an hour ago

With "preview" request, then "submit" request.

Weird . . .

The tests worked just fine in this thread, yet I have been unable to post comments on other threads.

The TPM Cafe gremlins are having a field day today.

On to greener pastures . . . And a warmer pond.

Still having trouble? Everything seems fine to us, but we want to make sure.

As of 11:30 AM EDT, it appears that it may still be happening, at least WRT the "your session has timed out" and associated inability to log out. I had to log out from multiple places: TPM Cafe, the main site, TPM; and at least once from the comments page at the story about the Gonzo WSJ interview. I finally logged out of the correct page, and ended my session.

FYI.

user-pic

try clearing your cache and cookies (shift-reload the page). Let me know if you're still having trouble.

Still having trouble! (12:00 PST)

Hi. I am able to post in some threads now, but when I click Submit on a reply there is a long delay. I counted twice. Once it was 61 seconds, the other time about 90 seconds. My internet connection seemed to be fine. I checked the Task Manager the second time and my 1.8GHz computer was running at 40-50% CPU capacity until the submission page updated at which point it went to normal at around 4%. I use Firefox 3.0.5 in case that helps, but I had troubles using IE last night too.

I will try to post in the threads which would not accept replies, next, and will report only if still stuck there.

user-pic

50-50. One old comment went through in 10 seconds (great surprise!). The next submissions was rejected with the topical error note. It was aimed at

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/david_seaton/2008/12/a-new-years-resvolution.php

It and the one which succeeded today both failed repeatedly yesterday, so I saved them to try again today. It doesn't seem to be cache or cookies (I assume logout followed by login clears the cookie(s)).

I do notice that since yesterday, sometimes the Leave a comment area does not immediately recognize that I am logged in. It shows the not-logged-in form for awhile, then finally pops up with "Thanks for sigining, in eds. (sign out)" So I would suspect some causal connection there.

user-pic

Hi eds,
We have identified the problem, and will be deploying a script tonight that will address these login and commenting errors. Thanks for the heads up.

Al - Thanks for the note and the fixes. As an aside, I got a new error message just now for the first time. Growing pains!

When I tried again it worked fine.

I've been completely unable to log in since last night.

On a whim, I clicked on artappraiser's "Following" banner and voila, up pops the "hi lally" message. Being optimistic, I clicked on the "your dashboard" icon and up comes aa's dashboard despite the message that it was my own dashboard that was loading.

That's some kind of workaround.

aa, once again, I want to thank you for your indefagible efforts to address TPM glitches. You rock. Without this blog, I would never have been tempted to click something unrelated just for the hell of it.

Andrew and Al. I sure hope you guys are well compensated for your endless efforts to unravel the TPM Gordian Glitch Knot. Apparently, it retangles itself at the slightest provocation and without notice.

Now, let's see if this comment posts.

Just popping up to wish you and yours a happy and healthy New Year artappraiser. And, lally, hpappy new year to you too, notwithstanding the distressing note we're ending 2008 on.

I don't want to swell your head too much lally :), but you should know that a few weeks ago when you wrote something about Reverend Warren and his views on Syria and its Jewish community, I actually ended up on that Landis website you tout and found an incredibly interesting article by an American guy, forgot his name now. Also, per your suggestion awhile back, I've been pretty much glued to ynet for my news on what's happening. FWIW, I thought you'd be interested to know that my oldest daughter is looking into studying arabic in either Tunisia (via a Fulbright) or in Egypt (through the Rotary language-study program). Candidly, I'm not too keen on the latter because of concerns about safety, but she's 22 and she'll end up making her own decision, etc.

Hope to read more from you both lally and AA. Better times.

Bruce.

I'm so glad you checked in on Syria Comment. Not only is Josh Landis the premier American expert on Syria (he's fluent in Arabic and married to a Syrian woman), the articles selected on his site provide a one-stop shopping source for information on the Levant.

But, even better are the discussions between Israelis and Arabs on the threads. If you do contemplate diving into those rich depths, I highly recommend doing so while the waters are still shallow. It can be damn confusing to swim there among so many unfamiliar inhabitants; despite how rewarding the excercise.

As regards to your daughter's choice, I would think the attractions of Tunisia would appeal more than the congestion of Cairo. Both locales hold dangers and I would be biting my lips bloody if I were attempting to be rational about my kid's decisions. The fact that she's Jewish is another worry.

I'm assuming she has contacts with others who have gone before her......

Along the SC lines, I recently happened upon a blog by two friends; Peaceman from Gaza and Hopeman from Sderot. These
men and their determination to live together in peace on the frontlines are beyond amazing, they are humbling.
http://www.ynet.co.il/english/articles/0,7340,L-3580687,00.html

On the eve of our new calender year, as I see more darkness ahead as chances for reconcilation fade to black in the ME, I think of the flicker of light represented by Peaceman and Hopeman and know in my soul that we can't give up, Bruce, we just can't.

So here's a New Year's invocation to Hopeman and Peaceman; may you both survive to see your shared dreams made manifest.

user-pic

Happy new year back, bslev.

And thank you for recently attempting (once again?) to introduce some balance and reason into the passions on the IP topic on this site. I for one appreciate reading what you have to say on it, seems to me that a lot of times your views on it represent the non-screaming non-internet-using majority out there a little better than the views of many other folks here and I think it's helpful for everyone to have something more along the lines of that p-o-v represented, if only to get a sense of political reality.
