Half Baked Alaska

Larry King is (was) on, and he is mostly all about the pregnancy. Ed Schultz is the kind of bulldog that you're glad seems to like you for some reason, but you would never let in your house.....this discussion needs to get beyond and to the substantive issues of the Bridge to Nowhere, Troopergate, etc., and soon. Talking about the pregnancy threatens to make the Democrats look nasty, sneaking glimpses at a 17 year old girl's diary and using it to try and discredit her mother. Yuck. Tomorrow you will see boorish Ed Schultz making an ass of himself for questioning Palin's mothering (although CNN ran the Barack quote again "off limits!" and Larry just said, "what ya think of that Ed?) Thank you Larry! Amazing, he's practically lucid tonight! Anderson Cooper is up next (why subject myself to this....its research, I have to), and I am afraid he will be on a high horse, protecting the honor of the 17 year old pregnant girl, a minor, and will generally make any Democrat on the air with him look leering and nasty, somehow morphing into Ed Schultz.

I expect Barack to come out again very strongly tomorrow against questions about the pregnancy, and stress the privacy of their families. He seems pretty serious about this, and for good reason, considering he will likely be President some day, and will want his daughters to live as normal lives as possible. I loathe GWB's Presidency, but I give him and Laura high marks for creating a "normal" childhood for their daughters. The sanctity and privacy of their children's lives is something we all can understand.

Now, we need to get the hypocrisy/out of touch theme out there in a big way without talking about the daughter, and being the kind of asshats we ourselves hate so much.

For starters, Palin the Reformer was once for the Bridge to Nowhere, helped run future jailbird former Senator Ted Stevens 527, and is under investigation for improper use of her office. Social Conservative Sarah Palin promotes abstinence education, promotes jimmy-hat-free school zones, is pro-life and presumably supports overturning Roe v. Wade. But, (engage your Hypocrisy Radar) Social Conservative Palin has a 17 year old pregnant daughter who interestingly made her own choice to keep the baby (this one is tricky, not sure we go here). If we do, gently, it will be nice to point out that her daughter benefits from the economic and financial support of her family, quite unlike thousands of poor teen, single mothers who might benefit from effective sex education, access to contraception, and legal, safe abortions as a last resort.

We must tread carefully, but this is a veritable treasure trove. There will be a major effort to paint this as a benefit, Palin as woman of the people, McCain showing courage choosing her. This must not be allowed.

I'm not sure I can sleep I am so jacked up about how the MSM will cover the fallout this week. Of course it SHOULD be a disaster for McCain, but we have known McCain was a disaster as a candidate since, well, forever. But the unblogosphere in America was still hanging around, kinda liking the Maverick, although a little worried he might be Bush III. Then the Palin pick, and the Right is energized, but the Swing Vote rightfully skeptical. Enter the media. This week's coverage will frame it for the only vote that counts anymore, the undecideds. Don't get me started on the undecideds, maybe they should shit, or get off the pot, but I digress. The stuff TPM uncovered today only matters if it gets out there, packaged beautifully in soundbyte form.

Oh yeah, and why not mention of the Alaska Independence thing? America loving, Country Firster, Gov. and VP nominee Palin was once a member of a group, one whose stated goals is to secede from the USA. The hypocrisy here is spit up your beverage worthy, given the likely response if Barack had been a member of such a group. Hmmmm, would that be as newsworthy say as having a preacher who one time in the context of a speech said "God Damn America"? Similar Treason-by-association, I'd say.....I seem to remember that getting just a tiny bit of airing in the media this spring. We will see if Palin is subject to even 1% of that kind of scrutiny. Don't count on it, but I have just sent a variation of this email to about 10 news organizations. Just a little keyboard Democracy! Good night all, see you for a fascinating tomorrow.
