We do Obama a disservice by withholding policy criticisms

Watching Sunday morning news shows, catching up on Josh's updates from last night's post, and seeing some of the debates I've been in here, it seems we need a better debate and understanding of the benefits and perils of criticizing our new President.

Josh's update makes the point:

If Nate's right about what Obama's plan is, having people pushing for something better from the outside is part of it. So under either scenario, holding your tongue makes no sense, in addition to being unethical.

Adrian Fenty, on Meet the Press just now praised the Obama economic recovery plan, saying it's just what we need. It's nice to be positive, but that's not entirely true.

The truth is that the Obama plan is a damn good start toward what we need, but it's not big enough for the problem we face. So, if we all run around muting any criticism then the Obama Recovery Plan will have fewer voices trying to make it better.

It's likely that Obama and his team have judged they will have a larger plan in the end if they start low to get bargained higher rather than startting high and getting knocked down. There's some logic there.

But if we limit our roles to a choir praising anything he does, we will be doing him a disservice. We can help with spreading the word on the depth of the Bush crater Obama and Congress need to fill. By remaining involved, remaining active, and not adopting partisan fictions around our Leader's greatness, we can help create the policy environment to make President Obama a huge historical success.

Of course, we should remember to keep the disagreements to policy.

The least the left can do for the President of DLC Centrism is play our designated role of cat to kick so that President Centrist can look tough to the Republican right who must be accomodated at any and all costs because, well, because they're the pack of wolves and we're just the kitty cats.

You say that we should feel free to criticize Obama, but we shouldn't criticize the critics? I'm really tired of this argument. If you are going to write an opinion piece then you should expect that people will disagree with you. No matter what they say, they don't have the ability to shut you down or drown out your criticism of Obama. No matter how popular he is there is no shortage of criticism of Obama from either side of the fence. And I think you should take a second look at where your critics are coming from. Some of them, like myself, don't believe that the naysayers know any better than Obama and his advisors. Others seek to base their judgement on actual facts not speculation or "reports" or some comment from an anonymous aide. You need not worry, Obama told CNBC's John Hardwood: "I think it's important not to live in the bubble, so you've got to be open to outside information, particularly criticism," he told CNBC on Wednesday. "I'll tell you, I very rarely read good press. I often read bad press, not because I agree with it, but because I want to get a sense of, 'Are there areas where I'm falling short and I can do better?'"

Disagreement with me is fine and dandy and something I'm used to. But you missed my point, which is very similar to a point made by Josh Marshall on the front page.

There are lots of Obama supporters telling other Obama supporters to shut up and not criticize him. Right here on these very pages, as a matter of fact.

Beyond the misread, sounds like we're in great agreement.
