Election night music mix?

I need some help.  I've got a few friends coming over tomorrow night for TV and champagne.  I want to burn a CD with a mix of appropriately celebratory songs.  So, what should I put on it?

I know a couple of tracks that have to go on.  Pride of place goes to a 1920s rendition of "Happy Days Are Here Again" by Jack Hylton.  Never goes out of style, and it's more appropriate this election cycle than ever.

Also, for old times' sake and party unity, "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow."

Articleman had a thread of election-fighting songs a few months ago with excellent suggestions.  (I'm definitely going to use Goldfrapp, Moby, They Might be Giants, and Heaven 17, and -- from the comments -- Bob Marley and Saul Williams.)  And I remember Ad Absurdum suggesting Jesus Jones "Right Here Right Now" back during the primary.

But now that we're closing in on the night itself, I need a few more.  A few general celebration/victory songs, as well as pointedly political songs, and even a few title-joke songs (e.g. Fleetwood Mac, "Landslide"; Ray Charles, "Georgia on My Mind"?).

Talking Heads: "Burning Down the House"

and the Senate, I hope!

Hey Alex. I have a post coming on this, that extraordinary - and surprising - mix of feelings people get when they're swept away in a truly historic election. Some people think they're gonna just want to celebrate & dance. Others first feelings are of bitterness, anger - at the sheer stupidity & cruelty of lost years, years that could have been so much more.

The surprise I've heard from many people is that within themselves, BOTH sets of feelings surge up & overflow. The kindest, gentlest, most positive & forgiving people, who - for just one night - let themselves feel that anger. In 1997, when Thatcher's 18 year nightmare ended, I can tell you this. I heard one song, playing again and again, out in the streets.

So my advice is, even if you tend to walk on the sunny side of the street, you might want a bit of the shadow in your mix. In Britain, it was an American song, funny enough. Which works across decades & continents, and probably has some mileage in it still. Once upon a time you dressed so fine.

Now you don't talk so loud, Now you don't seem so proud,
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel,
To be without a home,
Like a complete unknown,
Like a rolling stone?

Roger Waters: "The Tide is Turning"

user-pic

Jimi Hendrix, "Straight Ahead".

Sly and the Family Stone, "We Are Everyday People".

Martha and the Vandellas, "Dancing in the Street".

Woodie Guthrie, "This Land is Your Land".

user-pic

Ice Cube - "Go To Church"

user-pic

And throw in the Bruce Springsteen version as well!

user-pic

Celebrate Good Times - Cool and the Gang

Celebrate Good Times - Cool and the Gang

user-pic

It's good enough to rec twice!

user-pic

How about...

The Times They're A-changing by Bob Dylan. Because they really are!

Be Still My Beating Heart by Sting. Before the results are announced...

Fletcher Memorial Home by Pink Floyd. For the Republicans.

We Agree by Yes. Look up the lyrics, and the music is great (IMO).

History by The Verve. Because that's exactly what this is (and it's a good tune besides).

Imagine by John Lennon. Need I say more?

Long, Long, Long by The Beatles. The best way to sum up this election season in three words.

16 Military Wives by The Decemberists. Catchy tune sort of about America and the Iraq War.

Politik by Coldplay. Just for the title if nothing else.

I Predict a Riot by Kaiser Chiefs. A fun riot!

Light My Fire by The Doors. A good anthem song.

One by U2. Like, you know, That One?

All Dead, All Dead by Queen. A possible dirge for the GOP, if election results warrant it.

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel. We're gonna need those.

user-pic

I think I'm going to add "I Predict a Riot"! Just in case we have to go out and flip a few cop cars.

user-pic

My baker's dozen:

Like Ad says, Jesus Jones.

The Jam - Town Called Malice. (Up to us to change....)

New Radicals - You Get What You Give.

Mike Doughty - Fort Hood (Iraq meets Let The Sun Shine In.)

John Hiatt - Slow Turning.

Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now.

Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered. (Gotta have.)

LCD Soundsystem - North American Scum. (No longer!!)

Matthew Sweet - I've Been Waiting.

Crowded House - Something So Strong.

Chew Fu - Pride/Deeper Love (Aretha & Stones in the Bronx.)

Jason Isbell - Brand New Kind Of Actress (For Palin.)

Ike Reilly - The Boat Song (We're Getting Loaded.)

user-pic

I'm definitely adding the Jam, the Stevie Wonder, and the LCD Soundsystem too -- on the principle that there's got to be a little looking backward as well as forward . . .

user-pic

Saul Williams made the list - nice! I've got my List of Demands (Reparations) too :)

And since everyone has made excellent recs, I'm going to have to go the opposite route and list the songs to play when they don't have t go home, but they have to get the hell out of your place:

One Moment in Time - Whitney Houston

Promise of a New Day - Paula Abdul

Time To Change - The Brady Bunch

user-pic

I thought this list was for real until I re-read the part where you are trying to clear out your house. Excellent!

My list?

"One" by U2 and Mary Blige

"Get in the Ring," live version, by Guns N' Roses

"Overture of 1812"

"Up to the Mountains" by Patty Griffin.

user-pic

Don't Stop, for the Clintons.

I Love a Man in a Uniform, by Gang of Four, for irony.

Stop the Rock, by Apollo 440. Imagine it as Stop Barack/Can't Stop Barack, and it's amazing. It should be his theme, seriously.

... and We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions, for the reference to sports championship elation

user-pic

"Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie Wonder. Has been Obama's immediate post-speech tune since at least Feb. when I saw him in Ft. Worth...

And, I have to second "This Land Is Your Land"(Woodie Guthrie) in a BIG way. Nothing gets to the heart of what it means to live here from the POV of the working class.

user-pic

This one is new and it always compels me to dance.

The People by Common

"From Englewood to a single hood in Botswana
I see the "I" in "We", my n***a, yours is my drama
Standin in front of the judge with no honor
My raps ignite the people like Obama"

user-pic

The Changing of the Guard - Bob Dylan

user-pic

Parliament's "chocolate city"
the irony of the song is delicious

user-pic

Check out "In This Together" by yours truly.

Watch the video and please download the song for free. It was originally conceived as a song for Earth Day, but I am producing an American version as a tribute to the Obama campaign. Let me know if you would like to participate!

'In This Together' - Ryan Beveridge

user-pic

Second the Ike Reilly rec.

And adding "Light it on Fire" by Cowboy Mouth

"Deliverance" by You am I

"We're All in this Together" by HSM cast (I have nieces and nephews, and it's catchy)

"Flyover Land" by Marques Bovre and the Evil Twins

"I've Been Everywhere" by Johnny Cash

And the downer song amongst the joy..."Strange Fruit" by Billie Holliday as a reminder of how far we've come.

user-pic

Lee Dorsey mashup with Obama's Yes we can speech.

Best damn song I've heard in the past 20 months!

Video on youtube is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gooD9rYUm3k

mp3 of it is here: http://www.tanosokolow.com/yeswecan.html

user-pic

You're wondering how
You will pay for the way you misbehaved...)

Other great ones:
Ramones - Glad to See You Go
Peter Tosh - You Can't Fool Me Again
Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces

"Livin' It Up" - Ja Rule

Hopefully, these will get me through the day. :)

user-pic

Oh yeah, if I remember right, the Obamas' first date was going to see Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing." So in commemoration:

Public Enemy - Fight the Power

user-pic

Bob Marley & the Wailers - "Get Up, Stand Up" has to be in there.

user-pic

"Young Americans" - David Bowie
"Chase Those Crazy Baldheads Out of the Town" - Bob Marlet & the Wailers

user-pic

"This Is My Country" - The Impressions

user-pic

I would add, for all of us: Tina Turner- Simply The Best. Bette Midler- Wind beneath My Wings

And maybe just for Sarah Palin, Peggy Lee's Is That All There Is?

user-pic

The anthem for an entire generation or maybe two
must have its place of honor:

The Smiths - "Please, Please, Please, Let me, Let Me, Let Me Get What I Want"

Good times for a change,
See the luck I've had
Can make a good man turn bad.

So please, please, please
Let me, let me, let me,...let me
Get what I want this time.

Haven't had a dream in a long time,
See the life I've had
Can make a good man bad.

So...for once in my life,
Let me get what I want.

Lord knows, it would be the first time.
Lord knows, it would be the first time.

user-pic

Imagine - John Lennon - For sure...

user-pic

Another variation on the same theme:

Paul Simon - "Something So Right"

When something goes wrong,
I'm the first to admit it,
First to admit it,
The last one to know.

Something goes right,
Whoa, it's likely to lose me,
Apt to confuse me.

'Cause it's such an unusual sight,
I swear I can't get used
To something so right.

user-pic

"You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you."

user-pic

Can't forget a real Oldie but Goodie from the Sixties -

"John Brown's Body"

...lies a mouldering in the grave,
But his soul goes marching on.

Where'e his parade? Maybe this is it?

user-pic

How about "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen, which has been used at many Obama campaign events, both the recorded version and performed live by Springsteen at his many appearances on Obama's behalf.

user-pic

And another megahit from the Sixties,
as evocative now as it was then -

"Tenting Tonight"

Many are the hearts
That are weary tonight,
Wishing that the war would cease.
Many are the hearts
That are looking for the light
That brings the dawn of peace.

user-pic

"We Don't Need Another Hero" - Tina Turner

"I'll Take You There" - Staple Singers

"Here Comes The Sun" - Sheryl Crow's Version

user-pic

I Get Knocked Down (by Chumbawamba)

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down -
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down!!!

user-pic

Jesse Winchester - "That's Why I Like Roosevelt"

Tell me why you liked Roosevelt,
Poor man's friend.
That's why I liked Roosevelt,
Good God almighty, he's the poor man's friend.

'Cause in the year of 19 and 32,
We had no idea just what we would do,
All our finances had floated away,
'Till my dad got a job with the WPA.

And that's why I liked Roosevelt,
Good God almighty, he's the poor man's friend.

Tell me why you like Lester B,
Good God almighty, he's the poor man's friend.

In the year of 19 and 67,
As a somewhat younger man,
The call to bloody glory came,
And I would not raise my hand.
'Cause I'm baptised by water,
So I'll pass on the one by fire,
But you wanta fight, go on and fight,
If that be your desire.

That's why I like Pierre Trudeau
The poor man's friend.
That's why I like Pierre Trudeau,
Good God in heaven, that's the poor man's friend.

The only song from the above posts I recognize is the will.i.am song. See, I'm a metalhead so most of my music is what you'd call angst-driven. Two notable songs playing on my ipod at the gym today were:

A Farewell to Arms - Machine Head
"who has won when we're all dead?" makes me cry if I start thinking too hard about all the lives lost in war over the past 5 years

The Weapon They Fear - Heaven Shall Burn
"one strong voice became a storm, the weapon they fear, the weapon they fear"

but don't let that stuff scare you, it's not all anger. I still voted FOR Obama (as opposed to against mccain). This is just the music that gets me pumped up.

user-pic

If I was the president,
The minute the Congress called my name,
I'd say, "Now who do--
Who do you think you're fooling?"
I've got the presidential seal.
I'm up on the presidential podium.
My mama loves me, she loves me.
She gets down on her knees and hugs me.
She loves me like a rock.
She rocks me like the rock of ages.
And she loves me.
She loves me, loves me, loves me, loves me.

user-pic

Donald Fagen - "New Frontier"

Yes, we're gonna have a wingding,
A summer smoker underground.
It's just a dugout that my dad built,
In case the Reds decide to push the button down!

We've got provisions and lots of beer.
The key word is survival on the New Frontier!

Introduce me to that big blonde.
She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld.
Wearing Ambush and a French wig,
She's kind of wild, you can tell.

She loves to limbo, that much is clear.
She's got the right dynamic for the New Frontier!

user-pic

just saw this. Although a hymn is a bit odd for a celebration, I think this one is very eloquent under the circumstances. Sorry I cannot suggest a particular artist:

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee.
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.

user-pic

And to give due recognition where it belongs:

Blind Willie Johnson -
"Church, I'm Fully Saved Today"

(If you need proof of Divine Intervention,
just consider carefully the Cheney hunting
"accident". "Behold!"...sayeth the Lord.)

user-pic

Here is an electronic song I made out of the anxiety for the election featuring a few Obama samples from his Iowa primary victory speech.

http://www.williamsonsound.com/audio/WILLIAMSON-Obama_Song.mp3

user-pic

And for our dear friends in the enemy camp, perhaps a Chris Isaak medley:

"Things Go Wrong"
"Goin' Nowhere"
"Forever Blue"
"Lonely Nights"
"Somebody's Crying"
"Blue Hotel"
"Don't Leave Me on My Own"
"Lie to Me"
"Fade Away"
"You Owe Me Some Kind of Love"
"You Took My Heart"
"Changed Your Mind"
"Worked It Out Wrong"
"Don't Get So Down on Yourself"

Maybe somebody thought ahead and booked Chris and the Silvertones for the big shindig in Phoenix tonight! I think Chris's whole career trajectory leads straight to tonight's performance.

user-pic

Actually, 2Pac - Changes... fantastic song
