Walter Reed Middle School = Priceless!
Thanks to everyone who helped TPM identify the "green screen" picture behind McCain as Walter Reed Middle School. Stephanopoulos was speculating this morning that they tried to get the military hospital, but screwed up -- he credited the insight vaguely to "blogs." This kind of detective work is what blogs do well, and it's a killer catch: one piece of genuine, light-hearted ridicule is worth a thousand arguments!
Speaking of ridicule, I'd say the biggest problem facing McCain-Palin at the moment is that the top of the ticket has been completely upstaged and overshadowed by the veep. Palin is getting more Google hits than Michael Phelps; everyone points out that the audience yawned through last night's speech, only to perk up when McCain mentioned Palin.
If this continues, I think it's a serious problem for the Republicans. It's never great for the top of the ticket to be upstaged, but it's particularly risky this time because McCain's age and gender make him vulnerable to late night comedians. When an old man is pushed aside by a younger, stronger woman, it's murder on the male ego.
Also, a conversation about Palin is liable to become a conversation about creationism, abuse of power, and denying rape victims the right to choice. I don't think it's a conversation that will win the Republicans many votes.
If I were a Republican this morning, I'd be thinking hard about 2012. Huckabee-Pawlenty? Palin-Jindal?
