Hear, hear. Sure, these guys are armed and dangerous and at the very least should be locked up for a spell. But busting only them reminds me too much of the official response to Abu Ghraib -- we've punished the few bad apples, nothing to see here, people, move along. I seriously doubt that justice will prevail up the chain of command, where it belongs. See: upcoming blanket pardons. The Dems cannot ditch Lieberman fast enough, in my opinion. Er, that is, take away his chairmanship and watch him bail. I'm down with ancient herbal remedies, but I seriously doubt that the Obama administration is likely to push for any sort of decriminalization, as smart a thing as it would be in the big picture, at least not early on. It's a complex issue, for sure. As a simplified political analogy, I think of gays in the military for Clinton. Damn good idea, but the timing, maybe not so great. In the present case, I do think Obama has more pressing concerns to deal with. I also think the theatrics are not great -- we finally elect a brother, and he legalizes ganja? I hope I'm wrong, and he does change our approach to the war on some drugs in a big way, as the present approach is frighteningly unproductive, but I'm not holding my breath.

Almost but not quite. The Times is one of the least sloppy newspapers out there, and their editors very strictly follow their style and usage manual. Like you, I often disagree with their style and usage, but it's not that they're sloppy, just that they've made style and usage decisions that I disagree with. I agree with you that most acronyms should be capitalized (and the periods omitted), but that is not their convention.

I think she wanted to be on SNL because it would be "cool", and her handlers thought she could use some easy press exposure to somee light-hearted fun from the anti-America America. I agree with the others here that it really didn't work. SNL did not treat her with kid gloves, and she was not in on the humor, indeed. I thought the Weekend Update piece was hilarious, and while she was able to bob her upper body to the music, I did not see her laughing at the fun had at her expense.

Every one of these things I'm so sure that Obama has not nailed it, and that Grampa has got the better of him, but then I listen to the smarty pants and the snap polls on the tee vee, and every time I'm wrong. I've never been so happy to be so wrong! I can't frackin' believe we might win this thing. Holding my breath for the next 3 weeks, and I can only hope OBL's contribution falls short. He so wants a war monger and a Christianist sidekick, c'mon. But I'm thinking Obama has established some serious cred here, and that OBL's tricks might fall short this time (where the heck are the public orange alerts this year?
